He could hear loud voices in the background, but his aching head would not let him catch the words clearly.
The sounds were familiar, a low chaos threading through them, and he made out Karl's voice, as loud and insistent as always, like someone arguing with the whole room at once.
Slowly, he fluttered his eyes open and stared at the rune stones set into the ceiling above him. He blinked, trying to adjust to the bright light coming from the left side of the room that reflected off the carved runes overhead.
The scent of lavender incense filled his nostrils, and he drew a deep breath, letting it settle against the pounding in his skull, or at least trying to believe it did.
He was in Master Lynsander's Sanctuary.
Ryn remembered collapsing, remembered darkness closing in, but he was not back in that scorched world, and Zhao's face would not be the next thing to meet his eyes.
