Chapter 656: The Fire Between Layers
Vyra understood the structure before the first wave fully formed, which kept the surveyors from being caught inside it.
"It's not the same as the ones outside," she said at the entrance. "Those were a branch. This is the trunk."
The chamber was enormous and roughly circular, with the anchor column at its centre. What ran through the floor and walls was a network of channels wider than anything they had seen — and Leon's perception told him the same channels ran through at least four overlapping layers, occupying the same physical space, feeding each other across boundaries nothing physical could cross.
"Reserve routes," Vyra said. "Dozens. We kill a construct here and the charge to rebuild it doesn't come from the floor under our feet. It comes from a channel in another layer entirely and pops back out wherever it likes." She was already laying the first thin line of Crownfire along the floor. "Which means killing them faster is not a plan."
