Chapter 56 - Traces of ◻◻◻

"Yes, I can confirm the existence of a Threnodian inside Rinascita. I think it's better to send in some personnel from the Black Shore as soon as possible to prepare for the worst."

"Shorekeeper?"

"Huh? What do you mean there's two?"

"...You're serious."

As Rover's face turned sharp, Abby anxiously asked from right beside her,

"What's up, Rover? What did she say?"

"...It's nothing. It's just, I feel like this situation is much more complicated than what I originally anticipated."

"Huh? What does that mean?"

"...It seems like a scan from the Black Shore had already proved the existence of a Threnodian. But... There are actually two distinct frequency. Which means..."

"But that's the thing. One of the frequencies actually went into hiding. It no longer shows anything."

"Almost as if it disappeared... perhaps running away?"

"Whoa... What the heck? I didn't think Rinascita would be this terrifying!" Abby exclaimed. "What are the chances of it being the remnant of past Threnodians?"

"Nonexistent. A Threnodian could never truly die unless civilization cease to exist. But new Threnodians could still be born."

Rover put away her Terminal and turned her head slightly towards the redhead sitting on a bench, being accompanied by Phoebe.

'She has had contact with one of the Threnodian, but which one?'

"Their goal is simple, destroy civilization. Using anything in their arsenal, as long as it could kill off all civilization, nothing is too much."

"Mm. Ugh, I can't handle this pressure..."

"Heh, even though I'm the one that's going to do the fighting?"

"Not like that! But while you're fighting, I will give you moral support! Plus, if there's certain attacks that might vaporize you, just summon me! I'll eat that thing up like the greatest gourmet I've ever seen!"

"I appreciate the thoughts." Rover smiled and walked towards Danjin.

But just as she was about to speak, Danjin suddenly stood, leaving her hand hanging.

Then, with a determined expression, she spoke towards the Hero of Jinzhou, "Rover, I need your help. I am sure it'll sound unbelievable, but I require your assistance in this matter."

Controlling her breathing, Danjin's eyes slightly glowed red, but only for an instant. Of course, Rover didn't miss this change.

'Her forte activated?'

With a hand on her chest, Danjin bowed, "Please, I don't know anyone else stronger than you."

"..." Rover didn't give her response. It's not that she was hesitating, in fact, she was already going to help even without Danjin's pleading.

...Yes, she wasn't talking. Then for what reason was it that she's not talking?

What... Reason...

It was somewhat ironic. She should've responded immediately to the pleading, but for some reason her body refused to cooperate.

She could still move but something inside her head is preventing her doing what she wanted to.

Danjin, with her head still bowed, had her expression stiff. 'Ah... Even she wouldn't waste her time on some delusional from my part... It's fine. I'll just do it myself.'

"Sorry, I asked for too much. Please ignore what you just heard." With her eyes shadowed, Danjin turned and walked away.

Rover wanted to say something, but in the end, no noise came out. All she could do was watch as Danjin's back became smaller and smaller in the distance.

'It's alright, I have a lead. I am sure I do.'

She has no lead.

'I will remember you. I will bring you back.'

She doesn't know who she's trying to save.

'I'm sure you know me, which means that I know you too.'

Her hands trembled as her head aches.

Inside her mind, she was lifting her blade, pointed towards an entity that deserved only the worst of this world. Wishing upon it a death more painful than what is offered in hell.

Inside her mind, she dashed towards the entity, flicking her wrist and cutting their heads off.

Inside her mind, she felt relieved, it was finally over.

But she could only feel rage at herself.

Because... the final thing she saw inside those intangible memories were merely a soft smile on a small girl.

While walking, she didn't realized it but she had made her way out into the wild, her legs seemingly leading her somewhere.

And after a while, she saw a house. A very small house that could've been mistaken as a shack.

The windows still had no frame, but the building seemed out of place in the wilderness.

Right, this was the house she had made her shelter in the first night. She remembered now.

But the more she looked, the more familiar the house seemed, as if the other day wasn't the first time she had arrived in this place.

Her heart tightened.

She stopped at the front door, knocking at it softly. No response came.

She already knew it was an abandoned house, yet she still knocked.

It just felt like the right thing to do at this moment.

She entered quietly.

Looking at the furniture placed inside this house, a knot got caught up inside her throat as a small hiccup escaped.

Without even her own acknowledgement, her eyes began to turn blurry and she bit her lips, causing a trail of red to trickle down her chin.

Softly, she punched the wall in frustration.

"I-I don't know anymore... What do I do in this situation?" Her words became incomprehensible as more and more sobs escaped.

"Please... Tell me what I should do right now? I have no idea what's going on anymore... Who are you!? Please! Just give me clarification!" She slowly slid down to her knees, covering her face with both hands and screamed into the floor.

Waters escaped the gaps on her fingers.

"What am I doing here? What's the point?" Memories came and go, almost as if they were merely a figment of her imagination.

But she refused to believe so. Yet, due to that, she's now suffering at the edge of discovering the truth.

A single step was all that she needed, but she can't seem to find where it would lead.

"Please..."

Then, she felt something landed on her head.

It was a soft and small hand, stroking her head as if comforting a child.

"◻◻◻◻◻◻" It spoke.

But as Danjin quickly raised her head and revealed an undignified face covered in tears, the hand disappeared.
