Chapter 39 - A Peaceful Sleep Before The Carnevale

Scrat!

Rain splashed everywhere, creating mud and slippery surfaces.

Zani was prepared to face off against the Tacet Discords that had been eyeing them earlier, Rover also had already summoned her blade once again.

They had just been kicked out of the Sonoro Sphere, one that's owned by 'Faith Havensith', who had an absolutely uncanny resemblance to their 'Katsuri'.

But the former one was... a bit more mature, if she had to say.

Although the social skill was worse, she had no doubt that Faith was more knowledgeable when compared to Katsuri.

Of course, that alone doesn't deny the fact that they could still be the same person.

What if, by some miracle, two of the same individual could live in the same timeline?

If so, what kind of situation would allow such paradox to exist?

Extremely mind-numbing information.

And now, they're out of the Sonoro Sphere, no Tacet Discords in sight.

"...It's over, right?" Zani muttered.

"Don't jinx it, let's group up with Katsuri first, she might know something about this."

With a goal in mind, the cautiously made their way down the hill, back to where they had left both Katsuri and Christoforo behind.

As they arrived, the Retroact Rain was also becoming less aggressive, and more mild.

It seemed like the storm was finally about to settle.

As they got closer, the sight of an individual laying on the ground got their attention.

"That looked like Katsuri to me... Weird, I really thought that person earlier was her. Is it just me or they both looked exactly the same?"

Rover didn't respond as they made their way closer to the sleeping girl.

Now, they could finally get a closer look at her.

"...She looks so peaceful sleeping out in the wild." Rover said. "We should probably send her back first, it's quite fortunate that she didn't follow us, otherwise it'd be hard to protect her."

"But wouldn't she wake up?" Zani asked.

"I highly doubt that, she looked to be in such a deep slumber." Rover scrutinized. "I have a feeling that she might not wake up no matter what we do to her."

"Well, that's alright then, let's send her back to Danjin first. She told me they're both living together with... an Acolyte?"

"Phoebe, that's her name."

"Ah, right, Phoebe. Yeah, the three of them are apparently living together."

"You stay here, Zani. I'll send her back real quick."

"Alright."

Rover carefully picked up the sleeping girl in a princess carry, slow movement to make sure she doesn't feel uncomfortable.

Quickly, she made her way towards Ragunna City.

[Wuthering Waves]

'It should be around here... Ah, there it is.' Rover slightly lifted her head as she arrived at Phoebe's house.

She knocked twice and waited a moment as the door opened, revealing the ranger, Danjin.

"Haha, as I thought, she fell asleep. She didn't bother you as much, did she?" Danjin smiled as she moved her arms under the sleeping girl, taking her from Rover.

"Not at all. In fact, we might've been a bother to her instead." Rover said, cutting out the fact that Katsuri would've been in danger had she followed them around.

"Is that so? My apologies then if she did something she shouldn't have. Also, thanks for taking care of her. I thought that she really needed to interact with others more with the way she is."

"Hm." With a simple hum, Rover turned around and began to head back to meet up with Zani and continue their investigation.

Danjin closed the door with her shoulder as she carried Katsuri inside the house.

Now, the only sound attending to their ears were the sound of both their breath, one in their sleep, one wide awake.

Gently, Danjin carried Katsuri upstairs, where she herself made her room.

She entered her room and closed the door, gently placing down Katsuri into the bed and covering her in blanket.

It's quite fortunate she's not awake right now, otherwise she would've probably insisted on sleeping on the couch again.

Speaking of which... how come she's more comfortable sleeping everywhere else other than on a comfortable bed?

If she were to sleep on her own, then she'd probably choose a place other than a bed.

In that case... What could Danjin do that would guarantee Katsuri sleeping on the bed?

"...It can't be helped then, I'll make sure to be right beside you right as you sleep, always."

She simply needed to make sure Katsuri's too tired to think of a place she wanted to sleep in.

Just make her either pass out from tiredness or sleepy enough to not care about anything else.

Danjin turned her eyes towards the window, where light was still bright from the festival that's closing in.

Danjin turned back her attention to the sleeping girl, the face in which was clear of any injury and simply stared for a while, her heart calm.

"Hm... Tomorrow, the Carnevale would finally begin. It's quite exciting to think that I would have the honor to attend such festive event."

"And I'm sure... you'll feel the same, Katsuri."

"I really hope you could enjoy yourself."

"Hopefully, nothing unexpected happens."

"...But I doubt it, everything happening these past couple of days had been showing that there's something brewing behind the scenes where even the citizens have no idea what would happen."

"That incident during the rehearsal..."

"That's going to be part of something big that's about to happen."

"...Will the Montelli family be able to handle the other two factions trying to sabotage their Carnevale? Or would they stand on top?"

Fireworks exploded on the sky, proving just how hyped the Carnevale really is.

Although there's a whole night left before the Carnevale officially begin, everyone is already expecting the best out of the event.

If it failed, there's no doubt that the faction that would be hit the hardest is... The Montelli Family, the host of this Carnevale.

Danjin ran a finger through Katsuri's black hair, a soft smile pasted on her lips.

"Don't worry, I'll protect you. You can enjoy yourself for a while."

Danjin wasn't worried. There's nothing more safe than being next to her, she believed that.

She could easily tell when a situation had began to take turn for the worst, she'd be able to react immediately and protect the person she held dear, the innocents.

There's no need for the common people to be part of a tragedy.

[Wuthering Waves]

"..."

Danjin's face was empty, no expressions.

Her heart was cold, she can't feel anything right now.

There's just something missing, something extremely obvious that had led to her...

Danjin had vowed to bring justice, extinguish this world of evil.

Kill all murderers, capture all crime doers, take revenge against the one that had destroyed her own life.

"...Ah." A single tear dropped onto the cold body of a black haired girl. In the festive atmosphere of the Carnevale, at the peak of everyone's excitement... A single tear dropped from Danjin's eye.

She tried everything she could at a moment's notice, but nothing worked.

Katsuri's body was cold, there were no pulse remaining.

In the end, she can't escape tragedy.
