Chapter 2 - New kids

(Amber's POV)

The last thing I remember was falling asleep in a car. I didn't exactly remember where the foster care workers had said we were going but I didn't care. On the other hand, Raven was clearly tense about all of it.

The car slows to a halt as a small house comes into view. Through the window on the second floor, I notice many girls, around 3 to be exact.

Raven looked uncomfortable at the obviously stuffed area since 5 girls —including us obviously— would be sharing 2 rooms amongst us. The nice looking lady opens the door for us and as we climb out, I notice the grey house was actually white. The tinted car windows had made it look darker than it actually was.

In reality, the house was white with a black roof. There were two weeping willow trees hanging over the house, casting a fairytale looking scene. The tree's long thin branches flowed softly, falling down the roof and sides of the house.

As Raven and I follow the lady inside, we see 7 kids total —4 boys and 3 girls. They all look fairly shocked but said nothing. An awkward silence settled over the room until one girl stepped forward. She looked like she was 14 or 15, meaning she was around my age. Then she spoke.

"I'm Aisling." The girl was clearly nervous but no one else seemed to notice. "I'm Amber and this is Raven," I finally said. At this moment, it felt more like when "you're a new student that has to say their name and one interesting fact about themselves" instead of a "this is your new family" introduction. I'm sure it felt this way for everyone because I can guarantee that everyone could feel how suffocating it is.

After what felt like forever, everyone else introduced themselves, including the nice lady that brought us here. "Kali, Aisling, will you please show these lovely ladies where they will be staying?" The nice lady —who I'm just realizing is named Lacie,— asked.

The girls introduced as Kali and Aisling said nothing and instead just walked upstairs. Raven and I followed them to the second floor. "The second floor is basically for us all. There are two rooms and a bathroom. Be quick with showers, okay?" The "Kali" girl said.

"Yeah.. okay." Raven had finally spoken. She hadn't spoken since we left the foster care center after being sent back. We had been declared inseparable after a couple in Illinois had to give us back to foster care because they were getting too old to take care of us. We had lived together 3 years. They had tried to separate us once since then and Raven had gotten into a fight with another kid the first day. She was sent back and we were immediately both filed as "must be adopted together". Let's be honest people, we all know how desperate they were to get rid of us. They did everything they could think of to do exactly that.

The girls showed us both rooms and even the bathroom. Both rooms had 2 bunk beds in each room so that each room could have up to four girls. Both rooms had built in drawers under the bottom beds and the steps leading to the top bunk. Clothes, shoes, and other personal possessions were each sorted into the drawers.

After the tour, Raven and I decided to stay with Aisling and Kali in their room. They had this weird feeling to them. Aisling seemed to be able to create static in the air as soon as she felt nervous. Kali seemed to literally glow, along with Lucas, her brother. There was something weird about this house but I just can't put my finger on it. I did know I would find out the truth, I just wasn't as ready as I thought I was.
