Chapter 82: The Queen's Court
—
The twisted mindscape shifted around me as Madelyne's will reshaped reality. What had started as a warped version of Xavier's Institute transformed before my eyes. Walls melted like wax, floors rippled like water, and the ceiling stretched impossibly upward until it vanished into swirling darkness.
I floated there in Ghostfreak's spectral form, watching as a throne room materialized. Not the elegant, refined kind you'd find in a fairy tale castle. This was something ripped straight from a nightmare, full of jagged edges and impossible angles. The walls oozed with something that looked disturbingly like blood but moved against gravity.
And at the center of it all stood a throne made of twisted metal and what appeared to be actual human bones. Atop it sat Madelyne, transformed from the vulnerable woman who'd entered my room.
She looked like Jean Grey's evil twin – which, technically, she was. Her hair floated around her head like flames, her eyes glowed with unnatural power, and her clothes had changed to a skintight black outfit adorned with strange symbols. The neckline plunged low enough that I had to force myself to maintain eye contact.
"Welcome to my court, Ben Tennyson," she purred, her voice echoing strangely as if multiple people were speaking in perfect unison. "Do you like what I've done with the place?"
"It's a bit much," I replied, my Ghostfreak voice coming out as a raspy whisper. "Honestly, the whole 'evil queen' aesthetic is pretty overdone. Maybe try something more original?"
Her smile disappeared, replaced by a snarl. "Mock me all you want. Soon enough, the entire world will tremble before the Goblin Queen."
"The Goblin Queen?" I couldn't help but ask. "Did you workshop other names first, or was that your first choice? Because I've got suggestions."
The floor beneath me suddenly turned liquid, attempting to swallow me whole. I went intangible, rising above the trap.
"Sorry, intangibility. Kind of Ghostfreak's whole thing."
Madelyne's eyes narrowed. "You think you're clever, don't you? Rushing into my mind like some gallant hero. But you have no idea what you've stumbled into."
"Actually, I think I do. You found out you're a clone, and now you're having an identity crisis that's manifesting as delusions of grandeur." I said.
"Yes, I have," she grinned, raising her hand as flames erupted from the ground. "I am beyond Jean Grey. Beyond the X-Men. I am scorn and fury, forged in righteous brimstone. I am the Goblin Queen!"
I floated closer to her throne, not quite impressed. "Um, alright. So what's the issue here? If you've accepted you're a clone, why're you doing this? A bit too edgy, don't you think?"
Her expression darkened, and the entire room trembled with her rage. "Edgy? EDGY? I was created to be discarded! My entire existence was a lie, Ben! My memories stolen, my purpose to be nothing more than a vessel!"
The air around her crackled with psychic energy. "But if I can't be Jean Grey, then I'll become something greater. Something that will make them all pay for what was done to me! Yes!"
Her logic didn't make any sense. If she was angry at being created as a clone, why target the X-Men? Why not go after her creator? There was something off about this whole situation, something that felt rehearsed, artificial.
I knew the answer, of course. Madelyne wasn't in control of her own narrative. Something else was pulling the strings.
"It's time you met my court," Madelyne said, waving her hand dramatically. "They're dying to meet you."
She clapped her hands. From the shadows emerged nightmarish figures – each one a manifestation of her fractured psyche.
The first was a towering figure wrapped in chains, its skin burned and scarred, eyes blazing with hatred. "Rage," Madelyne introduced with a smile.
Next came a small, cowering form that looked like a younger version of Jean, tears streaming constantly down her face. "Abandonment."
A third figure materialized, this one draped in robes that seemed to be made of pure energy, crackling and shifting constantly. "Power."
Others followed – Vengeance, Despair, Ambition – and each one was more disturbing than the last. I frowned. That wasn't quite right. These didn't feel like just metaphors. I could feel the magic coming from them. But Jean Grey was no mage, and neither was her clone. These monsters were actual mana constructs.
Where did they come from…?
I think in the comics, her minions were goblin monsters from Limbo. And so, her title of Goblin Queen. But I don't think these are from limbo? I pondered with a frown. "Impressive," I admitted. "But kind of on the nose, don't you think? Might as well have labeled them."
"Always with the jokes, little Ben," she sighed. "A defense mechanism, perhaps? Or just stupidity?"
I was about to reply when a new voice entered the conversation. It was smooth, cultured, and dripping with malice.
"The boy fancies himself a hero, my dear. How quaint."
The shadows behind Madelyne's throne deepened, coalescing into a vague humanoid shape. I couldn't make out details, but I caught a glimpse of pale skin and a red diamond marking on what might have been a forehead.
"Oh, look, a third wheel in our Mind Castle date. Who's this friend of yours, Maddy?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.
"The architect of my awakening," Madelyne replied, reaching back to caress the shadowy presence. "My true father."
"I'm a Nexus of power," the shadow introduced itself, "though you may call me Mister Sinister. And you, Ben Tennyson, have become quite the nuisance."
I tried not to let my surprise show. "You know who I am?"
"Oh, I make it my business to know about unique genetic anomalies. A human boy who can transform into alien species? Fascinating." The shadow shifted, seeming to examine me more closely. "You shouldn't have picked a fight with Addwaitya. He reached out to me earlier. Now, let's see how well you fare against his monsters."
Ah, no wonder. That old turtle fuck sent these monsters here. I realized as Sinister's voice dropped to something almost like hunger. "And that device on you... Oh, it interests me. It interests me a lot."
Great. Another villain after the Omnitrix. Just what I needed.
"My courtiers," Madelyne commanded, "tear him apart!"
The manifestations surged forward, their forms shifting and twisting as they attacked. Rage launched chains from its wrists, while Power hurled crackling bolts of energy. Abandonment's tears became razor-sharp projectiles shooting toward me.
I simply went intangible, watching as every attack passed harmlessly through my spectral form.
"Yeah, that's not going to work," I said, floating lazily through their barrage. "What a pity, Maddy. I thought we had something going on between us, but here you are trying to kill my soul."
"Stay quiet, boy!"
I shrugged, which didn't quite translate well with Ghostfreak's body. I was quite invincible here as long as I didn't try to fight back. Because to fight back, I must stop being intangible, and therefore I'll be vulnerable to her attacks. Yeah, too risky.
"Look, Madelyne, I don't want to fight you or your... emotion mascots. You're being manipulated. Sinister is using you. Stop throwing a tantrum."
"Using me? You fool." She laughed, a sound that echoed unnaturally throughout the mindscape. "I'm using him! He gave me knowledge, power, purpose! Jean Grey was weak… constrained by morality and doubt. I am the Goblin Queen, and I will rule worlds!"
"That's the thing about puppet masters," I replied. "They make you think the strings were your idea."
Her face contorted with fury. "You understand nothing!"
The entire mindscape warped around me. Suddenly I was floating in a hospital room, watching as doctors pulled a red-haired infant from a woman who wasn't Jean Grey. The scene shifted – the baby grew into a child, then a teen, living a life that was the real Jean's but to Madelyne was as real as anything in this world.
"These are my memories," Madelyne's voice echoed. "Not hers. MINE."
The scene shifted again. I saw Jean – or perhaps Madelyne – meeting Scott Summers for the first time after the Dark Phoenix situation. The recognition in his eyes, followed by confusion, then interest. Their relationship blossoming, then deteriorating.
"I was always a replacement. A copy." Her voice broke slightly. "But I was never enough. He abandoned me the moment the real one appeared."
"Hello, didn't you break up with him…?" I tried to escape these visions, to transform back or at least move freely within her mind. I slapped the Omnitrix symbol on my chest, but nothing happened.
"Can't leave so easily," Sinister's voice chuckled. "You're in our domain now."
I was stuck as Ghostfreak, trapped within her mindscape. I'd need her to let me out, or maybe some outside help, before I can return outside.
The memories continued to flood around me. Most didn't make sense – fragmented, contradictory scenes that couldn't possibly fit together into a coherent life. Some scenes showed her with powers, others without. In some, she knew she was a clone; in others, she was oblivious.
These weren't real memories. They were fabrications. Partly drawn from Jean's actual past, partly invented to create a coherent backstory. And they were still being written, even now.
I couldn't transform back, but I didn't feel too bothered. Honestly, the memories weren't bothering me that much. It was like watching a bad movie. I simply waited, watching the parade of false history.
Someone would come for me. Professor Charles, if he reaches Cerebro, or Emma Frost. I just needed to keep Madelyne and Sinister occupied until then.
"Is this supposed to break me?" I asked, my Ghostfreak voice dripping with boredom. "Because I've seen scarier stuff on daytime television."
The memory-illusions shattered, and I found myself back in the twisted throne room. Madelyne's face was contorted with rage.
"You think this is a game?" she snarled.
"No, I think this is sad," I replied honestly. "Remember our talk earlier as we walked? You might not be Jean Grey, but this is not you either. You're being used as a weapon against people who have done nothing to harm you. Your anger is being directed at the wrong targets."
"SILENCE!" she screamed, and the mindscape trembled.
But I noticed something interesting. When I mentioned her being used, the shadow of Sinister had flickered slightly, as if disturbed.
"Hit a nerve there, didn't I?" I pressed. "You know deep down that Sinister doesn't care about you. You're just another experiment to him. A tool."
"That's enough," Sinister's voice cut in, sharper now. "Madelyne, finish this."
"Yes, father," she replied, her voice suddenly monotone.
The courtiers – her emotional manifestations – began to merge together, forming a swirling vortex of psychic energy. The throne room collapsed around us, replaced by an endless void filled with stars and fire. Madelyne floated at the center, arms outstretched, as the power built around her.
I braced myself for whatever was coming next, knowing that in here, in her mind, her power was nearly limitless. If she hit me with everything she had, even Ghostfreak's intangibility might not be enough.
Ghostfreak was something of a Telepath himself, and he could also use telekinesis. Some might say he should be able to counter Jean Grey pretty well.
But hey… clone or not, that's the host of the Phoenix Force. Although the entity likely wasn't inside her right now, that didn't mean she was a weakling. And I happened to be in her mental realm.
What do I even do in this situation?
