Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: Trick the Protagonist into Joining the Hunt!

December 25, 2023.

Christmas had just passed, but in the city of Macon, there was no sign of holiday cheer.

On the contrary, the streets were in complete chaos.

Looting, protests, and vandalism were everywhere.

For instance, right in front of Vincent Fox, a supermarket was in the middle of being ransacked, with a crowd storming in to grab whatever they could.

Most of them were Black Americans.

Vincent didn't intervene. He simply walked past and turned into another street, where yet another group of people was marching and chanting slogans while waving protest signs.

The entire city was in disarray.

But Vincent knew the plot. He understood the root cause of this unrest.

Months ago, people had already begun protesting against the government's decision to send present-day citizens to fight a war that belonged to the future.

Now, after months of effort, the government's final result was total failure.

Just days ago, humanity in the future had been wiped out by the monsters.

In those twelve months...

So many resources had been wasted.

So many lives had been lost.

And yet, nothing had changed.

It was an ending that no one could accept.

So, protests and riots were inevitable.

The storyline of The Tomorrow War was pretty straightforward.

On Christmas Eve in 2022, the protagonist was watching a soccer match at home when a rift opened on the stadium field. A group of soldiers from thirty years in the future emerged, delivering a desperate plea to mankind.

In the future, Earth was overrun by terrifying monsters known as the White Spikes, and the remnants of humanity were on the brink of extinction.

Unable to defeat them alone, they came back in time to seek help from the past.

Soon, both soldiers and civilians were drafted to fight in the future war.

The protagonist was one of them.

While fighting in the future, he reunited with his daughter, now a grown-up scientist. Tragically, their mission failed, and his daughter was devoured by a White Spike.

After returning to the present, devastated by his daughter's death, the protagonist made it his mission to uncover the origin of the White Spikes and prevent the future from happening.

Eventually, he discovered an alien spaceship and destroyed it, wiping out all of the White Spikes and saving the world.

Vincent had arrived at this critical moment.

Right after the protagonist had witnessed his daughter's death and returned from the future.

Now, it was time to find him... and use him.

Of course, Vincent had no intention of sharing the glory.

Once the White Spikes were located, he would ensure the protagonist couldn't interfere. He'd wipe out all the monsters himself.

"I remember in the original storyline, the protagonist is a high school teacher. There are three high schools in Macon... I'll just check them one by one."

Dan Forester had been acting strangely these past few days.

Ever since returning from the future, he hadn't been the same.

His wife was growing increasingly worried.

At first, she thought it was just PTSD.

After all, many veterans struggled with it.

She tried comforting him.

But it didn't work.

Today, Dan finally broke down and told her everything.

"Sweetheart, I'm not sick. I need to tell you something... something crazy. In the future, I met Muri, our daughter."

"She's smart, beautiful... she became a brilliant scientist."

His wife blinked. "Wait, you're saying you met our daughter?"

Dan nodded, tears running down his face.

"These past few days, we worked together. We were trying to create a toxin to kill those creatures... and she succeeded. She created it. She could've saved the world. But..."

He couldn't go on.

His wife understood what had happened.

The future had failed.

Which meant... their daughter had died.

Silence hung heavy between them.

After a long pause, she opened her mouth to comfort him.

Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door.

Knock knock knock.

"Who could that be?" she asked, standing up.

She opened the door.

A young man stood outside. Asian. Probably Chinese.

She didn't recognize him at all.

"May I help you?" she asked.

"Hello, ma'am." The young man smiled. "My name is Vincent Fox. I'm here to speak with your husband."

Inside, Dan heard the voice and quickly wiped his face before heading to the door.

"Hey, do we know each other?" Dan asked, puzzled.

Vincent didn't hesitate.

"Mr. Dan Forester. This is our first time meeting. But like you, I've seen the future. I want to change humanity's fate. I've found where the monsters are... and I know you possess the toxin that can kill them. I want us to work together."

Dan's expression froze.

"Change the future... change the future..."

His eyes lit up as he repeated the words.

"Yes! Even if I couldn't save Muri... I can still prevent all of this from happening again!"

He stared intensely at Vincent.

"You're serious? You really found the location of those monsters?"

Vincent nodded. "I swear I'm not lying."

"Good!" Dan declared without hesitation. "Then let's work together and destroy every last one of those monsters!"

The two clasped hands firmly.

Soon after, Vincent was invited inside.

Dan's wife brought them both coffee and sat on the couch as well.

Western women weren't like those in the East. When men talked, they didn't just quietly listen they joined in.

"By the way," Dan asked, "you said your name is Vincent... is it okay if I just call you Vin?"

Vincent nodded. "Of course."

"Alright then, Vin. Tell me... where exactly are these damn things hiding?"

"In the northwestern glaciers... near the polar bear territories."

Dan furrowed his brows. "How do you know that?"

Vincent replied, "I brought back a White Spike's claw from the future. There were traces of volcanic ash on it ash from an eruption over a thousand years ago. That proves the monsters weren't invaders from space... they've been here all along. Hidden beneath the Earth. I followed the clues, and those ashes were only found in one place."

He recounted the exact path the protagonist had followed in the original plot.

Dan listened carefully, increasingly convinced.

"No wonder," Dan muttered, "Muri told me those things appeared near the North Pole in 2048... but the satellites never detected any incoming objects from space. So they really were frozen underground, and only got out when the glaciers melted."

"It all makes sense now."

Dan's eyes gleamed with renewed hope.

"Thank you, Vin. Thank you for bringing me this news. You're absolutely right."

Dan stood up, his voice full of determination.

"Now... we just need to gather a team."
