Chapter 206 - CHAPTER 206

Shiba Kaien.

In another flow of fate, he had been hailed as a prodigy among Shinigami.

Not because he possessed overwhelming reiatsu like Zaraki Kenpachi, nor because he was a once in a generation anomaly like Hitsugaya Tōshirō but because of his balance. His instincts. His charisma. His unwavering heart.

And yet

He had died unjustly.

Not in glorious battle.

Not against an Espada.

But due to the parasitic Hollow Metastacia, a creation tied indirectly to Aizen's experiments. A Hollow capable of merging with its prey, nullifying Zanpakutō abilities upon contact, and manipulating the host body.

With Kaien's strength, that Hollow should not have been fatal.

But fate had been cruel.

Metastacia fused with Kaien's wife, Shiba Miyako.

Later, it invaded Kaien himself.

And in the darkness of a rain-soaked night

Rukia Kuchiki struck him down.

A tragedy born not of weakness

But of circumstance.

When Gosuke Shigure learned that Kaien had joined the Thirteenth Division under Ukitake Jūshirō, those distant memories stirred faintly within him.

If nothing changed, Kaien would rise quickly.

Within several years, he would become Lieutenant of the Thirteenth Division.

And years after that

Rukia would arrive.

The wheel would continue.

And blood would stain it once more.

Gosuke Shigure lay back in the garden of his estate, sunlight warming his face.

Beyond the courtyard walls, the breeze carried faint traces of salt from the distant sea.

"Though we are not close," he murmured quietly,

"If the opportunity presents itself… I would not mind rewriting that ending."

The words faded into the afternoon air.

Life for a retired Shinigami was unbearably idle.

Active captains at least had paperwork, patrol rotations, disciplinary hearings, and Hollow reports to occupy their days.

Even then, most of their time was spent in relative quiet.

But for someone like Gosuke Shigure who had already stepped away from command life had slowed to near stillness.

He trained occasionally.

Drank occasionally.

Basked in sunlight far too often.

"You could at least visit your own shop," he muttered to himself.

It had been operating for years now.

Under the Tsunayashiro clan's political protection, its existence within Seireitei had become normalized. Suspicion had long faded into curiosity.

The shop carried an assortment of unusual items:

Reiatsu suppression bracelets.

Long-duration military ration pills refined through spiritual compression.

Reinforced Gigai-compatible spiritual stabilizers.

Kidō amplification tools.

And

One of Urahara Kisuke's more eccentric creations.

A prototype communication device.

Unlike the wired telephones of the Human World, Urahara's device utilized Kidō resonance principles. By amplifying the wavelength of a user's spiritual pressure and synchronizing it to a pre-registered target signature, it allowed short-range spiritual communication without the need for Hell Butterflies.

The device required fine reiatsu control to operate.

Without precise modulation, the signal would distort.

It was impractical for most Shinigami.

Which was precisely why Urahara had abandoned it.

Gosuke, however, found it amusing.

Whether anyone had actually purchased one remained questionable.

"Honestly," Shigure sighed, "if he could invent something like a proper smartphone, Soul Society might finally escape the Edo period."

He finished reviewing the ledgers solid profits, steady turnover. Nothing alarming.

After inspecting inventory and confirming restocking schedules, he prepared to leave.

That was when the shop door slid open.

A familiar presence entered.

"Captain Soi Fon?"

He raised an eyebrow slightly.

Soi Fon stepped inside, posture straight, expression controlled.

"Gosuke-dono."

Even as a captain, she retained the old form of address.

He waved dismissively.

"You outrank me now. Just call me Gosuke."

She hesitated briefly.

Their history complicated formalities.

During her preparation for captain qualification, she had sought him out privately. For over a month, he had trained her relentlessly refining her Hakuda timing, correcting her Shunpo inefficiencies, forcing her to push past the limits of her Bankai, Jakuhō Raikōben.

It had not been pleasant training.

But it had been effective.

After a pause, she nodded.

"…Gosuke."

He smiled faintly.

"So. What brings the Captain of the Second Division to my humble shop?"

Soi Fon glanced briefly at the shelves before speaking.

"I require a reiatsu suppression device."

That drew his curiosity.

"Those are popular with Zaraki," he replied lightly. "He can't control his spiritual pressure properly without one. But you?"

Zaraki Kenpachi's eyepatch engineered by the Twelfth Division actively consumed his reiatsu to prevent it from overwhelming opponents too quickly.

Soi Fon's spiritual pressure, by contrast, was precise and controlled.

It was not excessive.

She remained silent for a moment.

Gosuke walked toward a secured display case and retrieved a bracelet-like device.

It was forged from reishi-conductive alloy, inscribed with micro-layered spiritual circuits.

"Adjustable limiter," he explained. "Multiple stages. It doesn't drain reiatsu like Zaraki's eyepatch it compresses output and regulates external leakage."

He stated the price.

She paid without complaint.

But he did not hand it over immediately.

"You don't need this for control," he said calmly. "Your reiatsu is already disciplined."

Soi Fon's eyes lowered slightly.

"It is not for control," she answered.

"Then?"

Her fingers tightened faintly around the payment receipt.

"My Bankai."

Jakuhō Raikōben.

A massive, missile-like manifestation an explosive release wholly unsuited to stealth operations.

It contradicted everything about the Second Division's assassination doctrine.

"Each time I use it," she continued quietly,

"My spiritual pressure spikes violently. The recoil affects mobility. And in prolonged engagements… it becomes a liability."

She looked up.

"I want to learn to fight under restriction."

Ah.

Not to suppress weakness

But to create discipline under pressure.

Gosuke understood.

To train while weighted.

To refine control by limiting output.

Zaraki used suppression to prevent overwhelming others.

Soi Fon would use it to sharpen herself further.

He handed her the bracelet.

"That's a better reason than most."

She accepted it with a slight bow.

Before leaving, she paused.

"…The Twelfth Division could have provided one."

He smirked faintly.

"But you didn't want to ask Kurotsuchi."

Her silence confirmed it.

Urahara's former division still carried complicated memories for her.

After she departed, Gosuke remained standing near the doorway.

The Gotei Thirteen was evolving.

New captains.

New lieutenants.

New ambitions.

Kaien rising within the Thirteenth.

Soi Fon refining her Bankai.

Tōsen deepening his conviction.

Komamura solidifying his loyalty.

And somewhere

Aizen Sōsuke continued to plan.

Shigure exhaled softly.

The pieces were aligning.

And if he chose to intervene

He would need to move before tragedy solidified into inevitability.
