Chapter 93 - CHAPTER 93

Due to the long lifespan of Shinigami, life in Soul Society inevitably becomes monotonous. Even if Gosuke Shigure occasionally went to snatch some of Zaraki's missions or cut down some Hollows near the borders, it still could not bring any excitement to this dull existence.

Of course, Gosuke Shigure could always dedicate his time to training. In fact, he did train regularly. But that was it. Blind penance and repetitive hard work could only achieve so much. Especially for Reiatsu growth – such a thing could not be improved by mere hard work alone. Growth required spiritual insights, not just physical repetition.

Aside from his daily life, part of Gosuke Shigure's attention remained on the great noble families. Ever since the fall of the Shiba family, turmoil among the nobles had begun to quietly unfold. Gosuke Shigure had reviewed the events carefully and came to the conclusion that behind this upheaval lay a hidden mastermind. The culprit was obvious: the Tsunayashiro family, one of the four great noble clans.

Now, under the silent machinations of some people, Kuchiki Xianghe (Hibiki) had been appointed captain of the First Squad's special forces. But when would these conspirators set their trap? The answer came swiftly – today.

It had only been a few months since Gosuke Shigure's review of the situation. Within that short time, the First Squad's special forces experienced 597 malicious incidents, resulting in Shinigami deaths. After unanimous identification by several nobles-born Shinigami, the murderer was declared to be Kuchiki Xianghe.

Ever since Kuchiki Xianghe was parachuted in as captain, a certain senior Shinigami within the unit had opposed him relentlessly. That senior believed that if Xianghe hadn't been installed by the Kuchiki family, he himself would have rightfully become captain long ago. In his eyes, Xianghe had stolen the position meant for him. As a result, he refused to follow Kuchiki Xianghe's orders and created endless difficulties.

Due to this constant provocation, Kuchiki Xianghe held a deep grudge. Finally, after enduring repeated defiance, he killed that senior Shinigami. Though the man was insubordinate and disrespectful, Soul Society strictly forbids the killing of fellow Shinigami, even by nobles.

What was to be done about Kuchiki Xianghe's crime?

Within the chambers of Central 46, Kuchiki Ginrei, head of the Kuchiki family, stood silently. The members of Central 46, most of whom were selected by various nobles, regarded Ginrei with cautious respect. They did not display the condescending arrogance they usually showed ordinary Shinigami. In terms of status, Kuchiki Ginrei's standing was far above theirs. If he desired, he could easily occupy one of the forty-six seats himself – and not just as a judge, but as one of the most prestigious six.

Today, however, they had summoned Kuchiki Ginrei to discuss Kuchiki Xianghe's actions. In truth, they were here to deliver the demands of the other nobles and enforce Soul Society's laws. Back when Hibiki served as the Third Seat of the Sixth Division, he had dealt with many noble affairs impartially. Ginrei fully supported him, as it upheld justice and the Kuchiki family's honour.

But now, having violated Soul Society's ultimate ban, Kuchiki Ginrei was expected to uphold that same justice. Moreover, Central 46 emphasised that as the head of the four great noble families, the Kuchiki clan must be an example for all. They acknowledged that many nobles broke rules, and Central 46 existed to uphold order among them. Over the years, they had punished many offending nobles. Thus, they hoped the Kuchiki family would continue abiding by the rules and maintain their status as role models. If even the Kuchiki clan began disregarding the law, chaos would engulf Soul Society.

Their words were spoken persuasively, not forcefully. After all, even Central 46 could not directly coerce the head of a great noble family. But to Ginrei, their words felt like moral blackmail.

"I understand. I will handle this matter fairly," Ginrei replied in a complicated tone.

He could sense there was a force behind Central 46 pushing them to say these things. The small and medium noble houses had united to use the rules as chains against him. And behind them lurked a true puppet master. Ginrei had to admit, their methods were brilliant. The Kuchiki clan had always upheld justice. If they broke the rules now, their centuries-old reputation would crumble.

"However, I believe Xianghe has been wronged. I hope you will assist in uncovering the truth to clear his name."

"Of course!" Central 46 replied hastily.

But Ginrei knew better than to expect the rigid Central 46 to find the truth. They only believed what was presented before their eyes. Therefore, Ginrei decided to investigate himself. Before that, however, he needed to meet with Xianghe.

Currently, Kuchiki Xianghe was imprisoned in the Repentance Cell, just as Gosuke Shigure had once been, his Zanpakutō confiscated.

When Xianghe saw his father-in-law, his emotions surged. "My lord, I've been framed!" he pleaded desperately.

Ginrei's gaze softened with complexity. "I believe you," he said quietly, "but tell me… are you willing to believe in me?"

"Xianghe, can you give me some time? I will uncover the truth and restore your honour. Until then, remain here. Don't worry, you will be free soon."

Hearing these words, Xianghe gradually calmed. Meeting Ginrei's eyes, he spoke firmly: "Very well."

Afterward, Ginrei left hurriedly to begin his investigation. Yet as soon as he departed, a dark figure appeared before the Repentance Cell. The newcomer had long dark-green hair and a mocking smile upon his lips as he looked at Xianghe.

"Do you really trust him?"

"Who are you?" Xianghe demanded, glaring at the mysterious figure.

"It doesn't matter who I am," the man replied softly. "I came only to tell you this: Kuchiki Ginrei has decided to abandon you. The Kuchiki family is the head of the four great noble houses and must remain a role model. Whether or not you committed a crime, your actions have already disgraced them. For the Kuchiki clan to remain untainted, you must die."

He chuckled coldly. "Only your execution will restore the clan's honour in the eyes of Soul Society."
