Chapter 90 - The Weight of Silence

Jack's chest felt like it was being pressed in from all sides. The office walls, even as expansive as Cain's corner suite was, seemed to close around him the moment he stepped in. He didn't knock this time. He just walked in, tugging at his tie like it was strangling him. Cain was behind his desk, head bent over a stack of documents. He looked up immediately, brows knitting at Jack's appearance.

"You alright?"

Jack didn't answer right away. He went straight for the sofa by the window, slumped into it like he'd been dropped there. His elbows rested on his knees, hands clasped together so tightly the knuckles turned white. For a long time, all he could do was breathe. In. Out. Too shallow. Too fast.

Cain stood, circling his desk slowly, his tone measured but concerned. "Jack?"
