Kael's paw crushed damp leaves as he crept through the undergrowth, each step silent, deliberate. The sky was bruised with gray, casting shadows that danced between tree trunks like ghosts. A foul wind stirred the air, thick with the coppery tang of blood and the scent of predators.
He paused, tail flicking low. A sound—barely perceptible. The crunch of bone under teeth.
They were close.
"Three wolves," he whispered.
Nyra stood beside him, half-melded into the shadows of a massive root. "Four," she corrected, eyes glowing faintly. "One's to the left. Smaller. A scout."
Kael grunted. "Too many to take head-on."
"You're learning," she said, but her voice was flat, unreadable.
He glanced at her. "You don't think I can win?"
She didn't look back. "I think if you charge them like an idiot, I'll be dragging your corpse home."
Kael bared his fangs. "Good thing I'm not an idiot."
"No," Nyra said coolly. "Just arrogant."
They'd discovered the wolves only hours earlier—territorial beasts, larger than average, with black-streaked fur and pale, soulless eyes. Unlike typical wolves, they bore ritualistic scars along their snouts and flanks—proof of taming or dominance rituals.
Beasts forged by someone—or something—with purpose.

Kael knew they couldn't afford to let the pack stay. They were already encroaching on the western ridge, dangerously close to the water source Kael had claimed. If he wanted to build a real territory, he'd have to mark boundaries—with claw and blood.
But Nyra's presence complicated everything.
She'd refused to follow his orders. She wasn't part of his pride. Not yet. And her every word, every sideways glance, reminded him of it.
"You're hesitating," she said now, low and sharp. "Do something."
Kael growled, keeping his voice level. "If you think you can lead better—go ahead."
Nyra moved forward a step, her form graceful, lethal. "You're the one trying to build a kingdom, Kael. I'm just here watching you try not to get us both killed."
The plan had to be fast. Brutal.
Kael would draw the scout away—make it look like he'd stumbled into their territory by accident. He'd lead it in a long arc toward the ravine where the soil was loose and the slope steep. Nyra would wait in ambush, cutting the wolf's escape.
If the kill was clean, the noise would draw the rest.
That's when they'd bait Gnarlfang.
Divide. Break morale. Dominate.
If it worked.
Kael broke cover first, bolting through the foliage with a growl loud enough to be heard by the nearest wolf. He didn't have to wait long—the scout picked up his trail instantly.

The forest blurred around Kael. Pain still pulled at his healing wound, but his muscles had regained enough strength to carry him in great, bounding strides.
The wolf behind him howled—a sharp, guttural cry—and charged blindly through the brush.
Kael led it through a deadfall, a thicket of twisted roots, and finally over the edge of the ravine.
He leapt—landed in a roll.
The wolf wasn't so lucky.
It hit the slope, lost footing, and skidded down in a tumble of limbs and dirt.
And then Nyra struck.
She fell from above like a dagger, claws slicing into the wolf's neck before it could yelp. Blood sprayed. Her jaws found the spine.

Kael arrived beside her just as she rolled off the corpse. Her fur was slick with blood. Her eyes locked onto his with a heated intensity that wasn't quite challenge—nor acceptance.
"You did well," he said.
"I always do," she replied.
The rest came quickly.
Gnarlfang arrived with two wolves flanking him, snarling, white teeth bared.
The leader was monstrous—nearly as large as Kael, with a twisted, burned ear and jagged bone piercings through his shoulders.

Kael's instincts flared.
He crouched low, waiting for the first rush.
The wolves fanned out.
Kael leapt toward the smallest—raking a claw down its snout before it could bite. It yelped, snapping wildly.
Behind him, Gnarlfang charged.
Kael twisted, barely avoiding the strike. Teeth grazed his haunch.
Nyra slammed into the second wolf from the side. Her claws carved a spray of blood. It collapsed with a whimper, throat torn.
Gnarlfang rounded on her.
Kael intercepted.
Their clash shook the ground—muscle on muscle, fang against fang.
Gnarlfang was strong. Stronger than Kael. For every strike Kael landed, Gnarlfang returned two. The wolf's fangs nicked his neck, claws digging into Kael's shoulder.

"Fall back!" Nyra barked. "You're not winning this!"
Kael snarled. "If I run, he claims this ground. I'm not running."
Nyra's voice was ice. "Then die here. Alone."
She turned to retreat—but paused, watching him from the treeline.
Kael staggered to his feet. His breath burned.
Gnarlfang charged again.
But Kael didn't move.
He waited.
The wolf lunged—straight into a snare of roots Kael had prepped before the ambush. Vines yanked tight around its rear leg, halting its charge.
Kael drove his paw into its throat.
Once. Twice. Three times.
It gurgled, biting wildly. One fang sank into Kael's foreleg.
Kael roared and slammed its skull into the rock.
Once. Twice.
It stopped moving.

Kael fell back, panting, soaked in blood.
Nyra approached slowly, her gaze unreadable.
"You almost died," she said flatly.
Kael met her eyes. "But I didn't."
"That wasn't strategy. That was desperation."
"I knew what I was doing."
"You got lucky."
He didn't answer. She didn't need to know how close he'd come to blacking out during the final exchange.
Nyra walked past him and stood over the corpses. She sniffed them, then sat.
After a long silence, she said, "You fight like someone who has nothing to lose."
Kael looked up at the clouds. "I don't have anything yet. But I will."
Nyra didn't reply. But she didn't walk away, either.
