I lay in my quarters, staring at the ceiling, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. Emily's words echoed in my ears.
"You might be pregnant."
I pressed a hand to my stomach, my fingers trembling slightly.
"Could it really be true?" I asked myself.
The signs were all there, especially the strange tightening in my abdomen. But I couldn't allow myself to believe it. Not now. Not when I had worked so hard to forget that life behind me.
With a sigh, I sat up and swung my legs over the side of the bed. It was past midnight now, but I still couldn't bring myself to stand and leave the Lavender Spot.
Suddenly, the faint sounds of laughter drifted up from the bar below. I was about to lie back down when a sudden low murmur caught my ears. Something within me told me it was something I should hear. So, I leaned closer to the nearby window.
A few rugged men stood outside the bar, their voices barely audible over the soft hum of the night.
