Sean said they were to leave that same day, so Charlotte went home to tell her parents about it.
"You're leaving?" Evelyn Brown couldn't keep the sadness from her voice as she repeated.
Charlotte grabbed her hand and rubbed it gently, "I'll be back in less than a year, mother."
"You've never been away from us for more than a day. Even when you worked in the hospital, your father and I could visit whenever you were too busy to come home, but now you're going so far away." Evelyn sighed again.
Dave Brown hadn't said anything the whole time, but he kept blinking his eyes to keep the tears welling up in his eyes from falling.
"We knew a day like this would come. Staying in a shabby town like this is a waste of your skills. I'm glad you will finally be able to go to the city where the world will see what a fine surgeon you are."
"Dad…" Charlotte voiced out, but was suddenly interrupted when the door was suddenly flung open and Lila stood in front of them.
