Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Compensations

"Abir, dinner is ready," a woman called out.

"Coming maa," a spectacled young man in his late teens, about 19 years old, responded.

He then went to the dining hall and started to have dinner with his family. While eating, he asked about his little brother, "Where did Avro go?"

"He went out with your uncle, they will be having dinner outside," my mother responded.

"What? Why didn't you call me? I also wanted to go," I wined.

"What are you talking about? He did, you responded you were busy doing a gatch marathon, or something," Father said.

"..."

I was speechless. "Yeah, I remember that," I said, feeling miffed for myself.

With that, the conversation ended as we ate. Everything was going fine, but then suddenly a blinding light flashed, which caused everyone to shield their eyes.

"What was that?" I stood up, and somehow I found myself alone in my empty house.

"Huh? Maa! Paa!" I called out to them. But no one responded; everything was just too silent.

The silence was overwhelming. For some reason, I had a bad feeling; my stomach tightened, and my heart raced. I anxiously moved around the house searching for my family, but to my dismay, no one was home.

"What's going on?" The dread I was feeling started to increase.

"They must be gone outside, right?" I thought of trying to calm myself.

"There's no way people can just disappear in an instant, right? That only happens in movies," I thought, a bead of sweat forming on my forehead. I rushed outside, only to discover that my entire house had somehow ended up in an unknown location.

"Where in the hell am I?" I said, seeing the unknown neighbourhood.

"This is not the place where my house was, this is not my neighbourhood," I, at this point, started to wonder whether I was hallucinating or this was all just a realistic dream.

I was scared out of my wits. Just a moment ago, I was eating dinner with my family, then suddenly, in the blink of an eye, I was sitting alone in an unknown place with my house.

"This is a dream..."

Unable to process reality, I started to delude myself, "haha… Yeah, that must be it. That's it, this must be a dream."

With a confused mind, I went inside my house. At this point, I couldn't help but think, [What a dream, an isekai plot like those isekai anime, manga and novels.]

My stomach growled, and I thought, "Wow, you feel hungry in a dream?" I didn't know that.

Remembering that there was food in the dining hall, I went back and sat back at the table. The food I was eating with my family was all there, and I finished eating it.

I stood up and started to look around, and wondered what kind of world this was. From the look on the outside, it didn't seem like I was in some medieval era. Now that he looks at his hands, they seem a bit smaller. "Did I become younger, or is this a different body?"

Just when he was wondering, in the next moment, an intense migraine struck him. For a few minutes, I endured the pain lying on my sofa. I felt like someone was forcefully shoving information into my brain.

"Ugh!" With a groan, I fell unconscious.

...

Next day…

I woke up with a groggy mind, "Ugh, my head hurts," I muttered as I went to the washroom to brush my teeth. As soon as I saw my face in the mirror, I froze.

I looked in the mirror, and a well-built blond boy with sharp green eyes stared back at me. "What the hell?"

I rubbed my eyes and looked again, but the face in the mirror didn't change.

Seeing this was not a dream. I reached out my hand and touched the mirror. "Is that me?"

==IMG==

My hands went to my face as I watched in the mirror, my face, my eyes, my nose and mouth, "what in the world? Maa! Paa! Bro!" I panickingly called out, but no one answered.

Again, I looked around the house and found no one.

Then, while in front of the entrance door, suddenly, a transparent blue colour screen appeared, on which something was written.

{Congratulations on gaining your memories in this world.}

Noticing the screen, my face had paled, and I began to remember what had happened last night. "Wasn't that all just a dream?"

He muttered as he read through the paragraph.

He fell to his knees, laughing hollowly. "Hahaha?" I guess I can't deny it anymore. I am in a different world," he concluded, as his eyes went back to the screen.

In the blue translucent screen, it was written that apparently my mother, Father, and I had died in a terrorist strike. My blood froze reading that, "What?"

I hurriedly read the next line, it was written, {Though, somehow my brother survived.} Reading that somewhat calmed my chaotic heart. But then again, how did he end up here? The question surfaced in his mind. Lucky for him, it was written next. It said there was a slight mistake. Instead of me, with my Mother and Father, my brother was supposed to die.

After their death, I was supposed to join the military and become a soldier who was supposed to take revenge in a surgical strike. I became speechless.

"..."

"..."

"What is this? A revenge story?"

[I am dead now, so what happens now?] I thought.

Again, it was written on the next line, {Because you died mistakenly. Your fate will be inherited by your brother.}

"What? Bastard! You want to drag my brother," I cursed at the screen. But the floating screen didn't react at all.

Seeing the screen remain unresponsive, I continued to read: {Due to your untimely death, we will provide compensation. Your parents will be reincarnated, but without any memories. As for you, the primary victim, we have a special compensation plan in place. We have created a new background for you in this world, and all your necessities have been accounted for. We hope you enjoy your second life.}

After I read through it, the paragraph vanished, and another screen appeared.

{Do you like to redeem the compensation pack?}

"..."

For a few minutes, I blankly stared at the screen, unmoving.

"Hahahaha…" For some reason, I started to laugh.

"How absurd," I couldn't help but laugh; tears streamed down my face, and my laughter gradually turned into sobs.

For three consecutive days, I sat idly, contemplating what to do with my new life. During this time of misery, I reflected on my memories and realised that my parents in this life had also recently passed away. After that, I didn't even have the motivation to eat or drink, which left my body thin and weak. My cheeks hollowed out, and I felt nothing but despair.

I rubbed my face as all the tears and grime were stuck on it.

Ring, Ring, Ring…

"Hmmm…"

"Is someone there? I am your neighbour who came to greet you," I heard a lady's voice.

I looked at the door with vacant eyes, got up, and slowly opened it. "Yes," I said in a raspy voice.

There stood an orange-haired lady. The lady, seeing my sunken face and the vacant, sleepless eyes, instantly became concerned. She controlled herself and said in a gentle tone.

==IMG==

"Hello there, I am your neighbour. My name is Yuki Ringo. What's yours?" the lady named Ringo asked.

[My name, huh?] What was it again? I tried to remember.

"I am Kanon, Kanon Grandsley," I responded.

Ringo smiled, hearing my name and asked, "Kanon kun, are your parents home?"

"I don't have any, they have passed away," my voice came in a monotonic tone.

Hearing that, Ringo fell into an awkward silence and inwardly sighed.

Growl…

From Kanon's stomach, the growling was heard.

Kanon, feeling hungry, didn't bother to react at all. At this moment, he was not in the mood to cook for himself.

Ringo, seeing his stomach growl, got an idea: "Kanon kun, is there any adult living with you here?"

I paused for a moment and reflected on my background. I used to travel frequently with my parents for their work, although I don't remember the specifics of what they did. Recently, they travelled to Japan and fell in love with the country. As a result, they decided to become citizens and purchase a house there. Just as we were settling down, they received an urgent call that required them to leave. I insisted on staying behind, and they agreed. Unfortunately, shortly after they departed, I received the devastating news that their plane had crashed in the North Pacific Ocean.

"I leave here alone," I answered straight to the point.

Growl…

Again, I didn't react at all.

Ringo saw him like that, asked, "Can you tell me how many days it's been since that happened?"

"Three days," I answered swiftly.

Upon hearing that, Ringo's face turned pale as she realised something. Then, she gently took my hand and asked, "Would you like to join us for lunch?"

Seeing him not react and stand still like a doll, Ringo became even more worried. She slowly pulled him, guiding him to her house.

"This is my house," she pointed at the next house right adjacent to his.

Kanon sat by Ringo's kitchen table, gazing at the little girl with straight, dark brown hair, who was about 8 years old, curiously staring back at him.

==IMG==

Feeling her curious gaze, I felt awkward and looked around the house until my gaze landed on a portrait of a boy with orange hair, similar to Ringo's.

"Here you go," Ringo said, placing rice and a fish dish.

"Eat it up," Ringo said, smiling gently.

Hearing that, I slowly picked up the rice bowl and started to eat. As soon as I took the first bite, I fell into a coughing fit.

Cough!

Cough!

Ringo, seeing him cough, hurriedly brought him water. "Drink this."

With a large gulp, Kanon drank it and sighed.

"Drink slowly," Ringo said concernedly.

After catching my breath, I started to eat voraciously.

Ringo smiled as she watched Kanon eat, feeling relieved it wasn't too late. Then, she heard the entrance door open and stepped outside.

"Mikan dear, please look after Kanon," she said, leaving.

"Ok, mom," Mikan then went back to staring at Kanon.

Kanon finished the bowl of rice. Still hungry, he looked around for Ringo. Not seeing her, he just sat there waiting.

Mikan, understanding what he wanted, swiftly took the bowl from his hand, approached the rice cooker, filled it with rice, and handed it back.

Kanon, taking the bowl, slightly nodded and started to eat again. After about two more bowls, he finally felt stuffed.

After eating for three days of fasting, his expressionless face finally showed some emotion.

"Hey, wanna play?" Mikan asked,

Kanon didn't react at all, he just sat there thinking about what to do with his life.

Mikan, seeing him not reacting, got near him and asked again, "Hey Kanon kun, let's play."

She grabbed Kanon's hand, then dragged him to the backyard. She then, from the shed, pulled out a football and kicked it at Kanon.

"I heard that boys love football; my brother used to love it too," Mikan said in a slightly melancholic tone, but she quickly recovered.

Kanon just stared at the ball, not doing anything.

"Hey, pass the ball," Mikan eagerly said. But Kanon still didn't move.

Mikan, seeing him not react, becomes sad. She still tried to cheer him up, but to her sadness, it didn't work.

Kanon noticed what Mikan was trying to do. He wanted to say something to comfort her, but he wasn't sure what to say. After all, he hadn't even figured out what to do with his own life, and now, he was in no position to offer any words of reassurance.

Kanon, feeling awkward, walked away and went directly to his house.

Ringo observed all of this from a distance, sighed and looked back at the men standing beside her, "What do you think?"

"From what I've heard, that kid just lost his family and currently lives alone, right?" Yuki Saiba, Ringo's husband, asked.

==IMG==

"Yes," Ringo nodded.

"Then, there's nothing much we can do here," Saiba concluded.

"But I can't just leave him alone like that! When I first saw him, the look in his eyes was haunting. There was no warmth in them; they were completely devoid of hope. No child should have such a look," Ringo said as she clenched her fist.

Saiba sees her like this, holds her hand, comforting her.

"You know, he somewhat reminds me of him," Ringo sobbed.

Saiba, seeing her cry, hugs her and calms her down.

"I wasn't able to save him, I wasn't even here," Ringo cried.

"It's okay, dear. You are not the only one to blame; I also share responsibility, too. But if you truly want to help him, give him some time and keep an eye on him."

"Well, for now, we should talk to Mikan, she is about to cry," Saiba goofily tried to shift the mood.

"Un," Ringo nodded and released the hug.
