Chapter 20 - Scent of a Mate

My eyelids felt impossibly heavy as the limo glided through the night. The bonfire celebration had drained every ounce of energy from my body. Between the dancing, the politics, and that kiss—God, that kiss—I was completely spent.

"We're almost home," Kaelen's deep voice rumbled beside me.

I managed a weak nod, fighting to keep my eyes open. The warmth of his body next to mine was dangerously comforting. Before I knew it, my head had drooped onto his shoulder.

"Sorry," I mumbled, trying to straighten up.

"Don't be." His arm wrapped around me, pulling me closer. "Rest."

That was the last thing I remembered before darkness claimed me.

I woke to the sensation of being carried. My eyes fluttered open to find myself cradled against Kaelen's chest, his arms secure beneath my knees and back as he climbed the mansion's grand staircase.

"Put me down," I protested weakly. "I can walk."
