After Selene had slapped me and stormed out, I'd been left alone in this opulent suite within what I assumed was Valerius's palace. The gilded furniture and satin bedspread might have impressed me under different circumstances, but now they only emphasized how trapped I was. I paced the room for what felt like hours, checking every window (sealed shut), every door (locked from the outside), searching desperately for some means of escape.
Nothing.
I placed protective hands over my belly, feeling Rhys shift inside me. "It's okay, baby," I whispered, though I felt anything but okay. "Daddy will find us."
But would he? Could he? The rational part of me knew Kaelen would move heaven and earth to reach us, but the terrified part wondered if even he could penetrate whatever fortress Valerius had hidden us in.
