Chapter 2 - You're not human

Ten years later

Amarah's Pov

We live in an abandoned underground, just me and my grandmother

Every other one of my kind lives either in some other underground or somewhere they think is hidden enough.

We hide from the Lycans during the day and from both the Lycans and vampires at night.

My grandmother do tell me that werewolves were also as powerful and had these special skills as well, but after the Lycans suddenly invaded our land and killed as much as they could, we have lived in fear

The children who were not yet able to get their wolves remained wolfless, and those who did were not able to shift.

It was as if we all became cursed after that night.

Since we lived among humans, we became almost like then, and most of us, especially myself, are forgetting what we actually are.

Vexmoor is a forgotten village hidden in thorny woods. Grandma said it's the safest place out there.

The humans living at Vexmoor are safer than us, they only have to avoid the vampires at night which is why we just pretend to be humans, dirtying our skin and use contact lenses

That's just one thing that makes us different from them. Our skin were tan and spotlessly glowing, and our eyes were different colors according to our descendant families.

Mine was green; sad enough, I don't even know my descendants' names.

Humans usually have brown or just black eyes, and in order to blend in, I have to wear contact lenses whenever I go out.

"Don't go anywhere, Amarah. It's dangerous out there why are you so stubborn. Puberty has hit you long enough. You are an adult now" grandma said but my mind was already made up.

For the past few days, the Lycans hunt for werewolves had increased, like they needed us for something.

I don't know what it could be; all I know is that whoever gets unfortunate to be caught has never been seen again.

But I'd rather risk it than watch the only family I have die before my very own eyes. Grandma is visibly shaken without food. She looks like she will give up on life soon. And her sickness wasn't helping the situation.

"I will be fine, grandmother just wait a little while, okay? My contact lens is right in my eyes. My hair is folded to a bum and I'm even wearing that huge hoodie you got me. I look so small in it that no one would know I'm an adult or even a lady. " I assured her.

"We still don't have enough money to pay for anything. Sit down dear .I rather go than watch you risk your life for me. I've lived long enough after all ," she insisted.

"Not in your condition. I won't let you and you know I mean every word I say. I never bluff " I smiled childishly.

"We have stacks of gold stuff. I could exchange them"

"Don't do that , dear , not this one."

"Grandma, I will be fine." There are mine now after all. I went out and poured a cup of water on the ground." Before it dries out I will be back!"

I dashed out just when I calmed.. her down enough.

I have never seen any hair with such a nice texture as if hair as mine. Grandma always warned me to cover it up and never let anyone get a glimpse of it. So I made sure the hoodie cap covered all of it.

The street was scanty, with two or three people moving around, their eyes darting backwards occasionally..

Soon enough, I saw the already dirty "OPEN" sign of the only store I get things from..

Matthew's face lit up in a smile as he saw me. He beckoned me to come inside instead of lingering outside, which I did.

"You got money this time, huh?"

"Something better as usual" I scoffed and extended my mother's pendant to him, he looked at me with a very serious face almost forcing my heart to sink and then grabbed the round golden pendants from me.

He started to smile suddenly after observing it for a while.

"What do you want?" He asked

"Meat. Rice and spice Plenty of it. I answer.

He nodded and started to cut a large shunck of meat for me, surprisingly he also really added enough rice and now I feel like I did reap him off .

"Veronica, stay safe out there." Matthew's voice echoed in my ear as I dashed out from his store

Outside has become more freezing cold, and I felt numb for a while due to the cold flapping my feet.

I increased my pace when I noticed some weird faces and prying eyes outside Matthew's shop, I didn't bother to greet anyone, and I also didn't bother to run; maybe they'd suspect something about me if I did.

I walk with my face down to the floor, minding my own business. Not until I mistakenly bump into someone.

I muttered a "sorry" to the person only for him to grab my arms and force me to turn towards him .

I could see the man's socks and his thick black boot. He lived well.

I dare not look up, but somehow I already knew what he could be.

I tried very hard to free myself from his grip, but it was too tight. My arm was aching where he held me . I try again, but it seems that he tightens the grip each time I try, and I swallow the scream of pain that threatened to escape my mouth.

"Take off your hoodie," he ordered, and without waiting for me to refuse, he dragged the hoodie cap out of my face and even went to the extent of loosening my ponytail. My hair fell to my shoulders and then down to my waist.

The man stiffened.

His fingers, which had just seconds ago gripped my arm with the intent of bruising, loosened just slightly. .

His eyes were on my hair.

His silence was worse than his grip. It was heavy and laced with an intensity I didn't understand. Not until I slowly looked up.

His eyes were not brown. Not black. Not anything close to human.

They were silver. Icy, glowing silver rimmed with streaks of gold. A Lycan.

Panic clawed at my throat.

I tried to jerk back, but he grabbed me again, this time with both hands, one locking onto my wrist, the other gripping the back of my neck, his fingers tangled in my hair.

"Where did you get this?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

I blinked through the fear. "Get… what?"

"Your hair. But your eyes..." He stepped closer, and I felt his breath against my cheek. "You're not human. What are you?"

I swallowed hard. "Let me go."
