Chapter 44 - Chapter 49 – The Betrayal Revealed

The glow from the computer screens was the only light in the dimly lit room, casting long shadows that flickered across the faces of those gathered around. Selene stood at the center, her eyes fixed on the data scrolling rapidly across the monitors. The pieces of the puzzle were finally coming together — but what they revealed was more devastating than she could have imagined.

Lina's fingers danced over the keyboard, pulling up files, cross-referencing communications intercepted by the resistance. "Here," Lina said, voice trembling slightly. "This is the contact log we found hidden deep in Elias's notebook. Look at the timestamps — encrypted messages, meeting coordinates. And the name popping up again and again? It's Calder."

Selene's heart stopped for a moment. Calder, her trusted confidant, the one who had stood quietly in the background, had been the shadow lurking in their midst.

"Calder?" Marrow whispered, disbelief clear on his face. "That can't be. He's been with us since the beginning."

Cassandra's eyes narrowed. "That's exactly what makes this so dangerous. The mole has been one of us all along."

Selene's mind raced back through the countless hours spent planning, fighting, and sharing secrets. Every moment Calder had been there, he had been watching — and betraying.

Selene slammed her fist on the table. "We need to confront him. But we have to be careful. If he suspects we know, he could disappear — or worse."

Mira stepped forward, voice steady and sharp. "I can track his movements through my network. We'll know when he tries to make a move."

Selene nodded grimly. "Good. But first, we lure him out."

The team set to work, crafting a plan to bait Calder. They sent out false information about a critical meeting — a chance for the mole to get inside knowledge of their next move. Selene would be there, but so would hidden cameras and trusted allies ready to act.

The night of the meeting, Selene's nerves tightened like a coil. She stood in the abandoned warehouse, shadows stretching long and cold. The silence was broken only by the soft drip of water echoing through the cavernous space.

A figure appeared in the distance — calm, composed, stepping into the light. Calder.

His eyes met Selene's with an unreadable expression, a flicker of something almost like regret.

"So, you found out," Calder said quietly. "I suppose it was only a matter of time."

Selene's voice was hard. "Why, Calder? Why betray us?"

He took a slow breath, shoulders sagging. "Because I had no choice. Harrow threatened my family. They forced me to play along — to feed them information, or they would destroy everything I care about."

Selene's anger warred with the truth in his words. She wanted to hate him — but she also understood the chains that bound him.

"We could have helped you," she said softly. "We're stronger together."

Calder's gaze dropped. "Maybe. But now, it's too late."

Suddenly, the warehouse doors slammed shut. Harrow operatives surrounded them, weapons drawn.

The trap had been more dangerous than they'd anticipated. Selene's team sprang into action — fighting, dodging, and using every skill they had to hold the line.

In the chaos, Calder made a choice. He turned on the operatives, helping Selene and the others escape the tightening noose.

As they fled into the night, Selene looked at him — a man fractured by loyalty and fear, seeking redemption.

The betrayal was revealed. The enemy was closer than ever. But in that darkness, a fragile thread of hope remained.

Selene knew the final battle was near. And only by trusting those shadows could they hope to survive.
