## POV: Gerald
The old rogue smells like whiskey and death but he's the only one I trust to carry messages anymore.
"You sure about this?" Jake asks for the third time. "Letter like this gets intercepted and we're both dead men."
"I'm already a dead man. Question is whether I die for something worth dying for."
The letter's small. Folded tight and sealed with wax that don't smell like nothing special. But inside is everything Vanessa needs to know about the Shadow Council's plans. About the trap they're setting. About how they know she's coming for the third artifact.
About how I helped them know.
"Where you want me to take it?"
"Find Damien first. He'll know how to get it to her safe."
"And if Damien's dead?"
"Then find someone else who gives a damn about stopping these bastards."
Jake tucks the letter inside his coat. "What you want me to tell her if she asks who sent it?"
