Chapter 6 - 6. Kay Is Back

They were fortunate enough to evacuate the burning house with Jerry's assistance, who escorted them to the Mayor's family mansion. Since their arrival, Rose had been in a state of panic, not having sighted her son.

Meanwhile, Laylah remained perplexed, experiencing both incidence from the party banquet, and the fire within just two days of her time with them.

The mayor hurriedly stepped into the living room, he was out to pick his family from the airport, when he got a call informing him of the fire at Liam's mansion and Rose's relocation to the family mansion

"Rose, what happened? Why is there a fire?" He inquired, as he stomped into the living room.

"I don't know, my son is still there with the firefighters. Please do something, I'm worried he might get stuck in the house, and you know what will happen." She sounded perturbed, pacing back and forth.

The mayor picked up his phone and contacted the head of the firefighters department. Fortunately, the figure answered immediately.

"Hello Mayor, is everything okay?"

"You know all isn't well. Has the fire been put off? What about my nephew?" He asks.

"I just spoke to one of them, they are still trying to put off the fire. Your nephew is out already, he insisted on staying behind until the fire has been out off."

"Okay. Thank you, I will keep in touch." He responded, and they hanged up.

"Uncle what did he say?" Hilda asked, before they could question him.

"He's fine. Rose you need to calm down, he will be with us soon. He insisted on staying behind."

"That's a relief." Laylah breathed out. That was when the Mayor notice she was with them.

"Laylah?" He called out astounded, turning to his brother's wife. "Rose don't tell me she was in the house when the fire started?"

"Yes, she came to spend some time with us. I can't believe she has to witness sure tragedy."

Laylah stood up, and close the space between them.

"We should be glad nothing happened. I will be your daughter-in-law soon, I should get use to all this."

"Uncle, I bet this is intentional. There's someone behind all this. Besides this all started happening when Laylah showed up in the picture." Hilda said, making everyone turn to look at her.

"Hilda, this should be the last time you say something like this. What does Laylah have to do with this? Was Laylah involved in the letter your mother received weeks back?"

"You should apologize to her, making assumptions is not good." Rose added, expecting Hilda to comply, even though she usually doesn't listen to her.

What Hilda did next stunned them. She stood up and walked out of the room.

"I will get use to her, I believe we will get along." Laylah said, breathing out with a heavy heart. Why does she despise her? She wondered.

"It's okay, let's wait for Liam. I just got a text from Jerry, his on his way." The mayor responded. They waited for the next thirty minutes, until Liam arrived.

The door to the living room swung open, and Liam walked in. He reached out to his mother and pulled her into a hug.

"I'm sorry, I hope you are okay?"

"I'm fine. What about you? Are you hurt?" She disentangled the hug, checking out his body.

"I'm fine. Don't worry about me. What about you Laylah? Are you okay?" He sounded concerned.

"Yes I am. Thanks for asking."

The Mayor patted the space next to him.

"Come have a sit let's discuss, what really happened?"

"I don't know how it all happened, but this proves that someone did it." Liam responded, handing Jerry's phone to the Mayor.

The Mayor read the text message in shock.

"Jerry got this? But how?" He couldn't believe he just read something like that. Who could be this fierce to send such messages? He wondered.

"I think this is a warning. The person never intends to kill us. Jerry got a text message to come save me."

"What?" Rose grabbed the phone and checked the messages to see for herself.

"Uncle, you also saw the scandal, there's no way the person behind the fire didn't release it."

"I know what you are thinking, the timing is right. People will point fingers at you, and the fire will seem more like a revenge for what you did." The Mayor responded.

"That's why I told you Kay is back to hunt us. Mother is not safe."

"Laylah, please excuse us for a few minutes." Rose asked. Laylah simply nodded and left the room.

Rose moved closer to them. This is something discreet and needs their full attention.

"Liam, what do you mean Kay? We all know what happened to Kay. Why would he be back?"

"Rose, put your mind at rest, this has nothing to do with Kay. Do not listen to what Liam has to say, I will handle him."

"How do you explain all this happening without a trace? We know there's just one person out there who is capable of committing evil without a trace." Liam said.

"He is right, from the death body to the fire, and the text message, there's no way we can trace it." Rose succumbs.

"I don't want to hear Kay again, your mind Should be at rest, let's focus on how to shut the media up." The mayor warned.

"What about the body, have you concluded?" Rose asks.

"Liam and I will visit his family tomorrow and try to console them. The doctor said there's nothing wrong with him, he wasn't poisoned."

Liam was about to mention Kay but quickly stopped himself. His uncle doesn't like repeating himself, but that didn't mean he wouldn't order a search.

"We should buy their silent, If not, they might expose it to the public." Rose said.

"No, mother! That isn't a good idea. I can make them understand why we don't want it to go public." Liam responded, with a glint of hope she would understand him.

"Your son is right, it's better than buying their silent. That will be evil, if we do."

"Liam, you will have to pick a wedding date within the weekend. Your wedding is the only thing that can stop the media." The Mayor added, as soon as the idea popped into his head.

"I agree, pick a wedding date. There's a rumor that you are infertile, the wedding will give them more reason to ignore the past."

"No, I can't do that. I don't intend marrying soon. Mother you caused this, you know…." He was cut off before he could finish.

"Respect the decision we have made, I won't repeat myself regarding this wedding. Please excuse me, I need to check up on Laylah." She walked out of the room.

"Is everything alright?" Laylah asked, as she came into view.

"Yes sweetheart, nothing to worry about. You and Liam will pick a date within the weekend. I'm still waiting for your quest, before I send you the money. Once the date is fixed, you will have to quit your Job."

'Everything is happening faster. A wedding date already? It's time to tell her how much she should pay me. I can't get married to him without getting my money'

"Okay mother. I will discuss with him to pick a date." She responded.

"Very well, let's go, I will drop you at home." Laylah followed behind, and they stride out of the balcony.
