Helena climbed into the carriage with such haste that I nearly jumped. Her eyes were wide with an emotion I couldn't immediately place.
"Are you alright?" I asked, shifting to make room on the plush seat.
She blinked rapidly before focusing on me. "I believe Lady Rowena Thorne just apologized to me," she said, her voice thick with disbelief. "Actually apologized. For years of... well, being herself."
I couldn't help but smile despite my lingering nausea. "She's been full of surprises lately."
Helena studied my face carefully, her initial shock giving way to concern. "You look pale, Isabella. Are you unwell?"
The question hung between us. I hadn't planned to share my suspicions yet—not until Dr. Willis confirmed them—but Helena's genuine worry broke through my hesitation.
"I think I might be..." I lowered my voice, even though we were alone, "with child."
