Chapter Text
The wedding of King Aegon the Sixth and Lady Alla Tyrell was met with much acclaim and celebration.
Margaery Tyrell was still held high in the hearts of the smallfolk, so the declaration that one of her kinswomen was to be the next Queen of the Seven Kingdoms was well received. While there was quite a bit of grumbling and fussing from other nobility, most in the very least agreed that Alla was a fit match for the king and already there had been several offers of whom the firstborn children of the royals could be betrothed to.
Missandei thought it was 'counting the chickens before they hatch' as some farmers were said to say but congratulated Alla upon their next meeting.
It was, for many, a swift wedding and rather out of sorts but with winter no one was wishing to overstay for fear of being snowed in. So while there were some complaints for the swiftness behind it, the majority understood especially with the grand tourney being held beforehand. The announcement of the next Queen of the Seven Kingdoms was essentially treated like grand surprise, a treat that everyone knew was to happen.
For King's Landing it was much welcomed, as it was the final chance to scrape as much coin as they could before so much would come to a stop when the snows swept in. Missandei had never seen snow before, and from her various conversations with the nobles in King's Landing especially those who had come north, the fine sprinkling that had dusted the city was nothing to the great white tundra that would soon swallow the realm.
The wedding was already partially planned, the skeleton of plans lying wait in anticipation of the king's choice, and then it swiftly came to be. Due to the Sept of Baelor being destroyed, and the Dragonpit under renovations, the tourney grounds had been transformed for the wedding so the smallfolk could witness it.
They remained as honoured guests while the celebrations began, and Daenerys had gone to the king with her recommendations for his future queen. Both Alla and Desmera had taken pains to try and learn more about dragons and Ghidorah's amusement over them had earned them many points so to speak. Missandei was more pleased that the Lord Hand had finally given up on his passive aggressive comments about Daenerys being the queen, and added his opinion of the Tyrells which was favourable due to their support of House Targaryen during the Rebellion.
Missandei kept a sharp eye upon the affairs of King's Landing, at the heavy bustle and talks and rumours and general chaos that surrounded a royal wedding. They already had gifts prepared for the couple, to gift in the aftermath of the ceremony even if Dany's were mostly texts and scrolls about dragons she had discovered in Essos.
As the due date approached they also continued to mingle with those of the court, and with one afternoon lunch with Olenna in the gardens they learned that the Queen of Thorns was in talks with the Lord Hand to marry him to Desmera.
"Desmera?" Daenerys had frowned, her pale brows drawn close. "Is she not quite younger than Lord Connington, young enough to be his daughter? Would not a husband closer in age be more befitting of her?"
"It was her suggestion to try for the Lord Hand," Lady Olenna replied, which the empress accepted with a nod.
Missandei understood the truth of it as Jon Connington was now lord of Griffon's Roost while also in position as Hand of the King. Desmera was of high birth yet had two elder brothers so any children she bore would then inherit Griffon's Roost. The Redwyne's were long allies of House Tyrell, so such a match would be seen as cementing the uneasy bonds that had been broken through the death of Queen Margaery and also ensure the continual trade lines as the Redwyne fleet controlled many of the shipping lanes. The people of the Reach and Westerlands also had Desmera's father, Lord Paxter, to thank for his swift assistance in stopping Euron Greyjoy's assault and even now in his current efforts to aid the damage done to Oldtown. And also the Starry Sept's location, as the High Septon was housed there upon the sept upon King's Landing was rebuilt so there was also the Faith's support.
There was also the more family aspect of the match, with Desmera now being allowed to stay in King's Landing with Alla with her own match announced.
Missandei did know Jon Connington's lack of romance throughout his years in Essos, either due to being dedicated to his duty over protecting Aegon or simple disinterest, yet love was not a necessity for noble marriages. As a Naathi Missandei always just found it quite sorrowful yet if it helped bring the realm into stability then she supposed it was how the Westerosi would do it.
The wedding ceremony was held on a chilly day, with the sun high and sky clear. Morning frost had kept the ground firm and puddles with an icy sheen that cracked underfoot. Missandei was clad in black and red just like her empress, even if Daenerys had a flaring collar at her dress in an assortment of feathers dyed in red, yellow and orange as if she was enshrouded with flames. Ghidorah was entirely uninterested in the entire display and spent his time flying about Blackwater Bay, occasionally with some very little shadows following him.
The ceremony went without incident, with the blessings and vows and rite seen through without trouble underneath the sun and all too soon they were gathering for the feast in the aftermath of the wedding of King Aegon and his new queen Alla Tyrell.
There had been some arguing, but Una was permitted to attend even with the wariness towards those of the red faith. Her ability to detect poison was too valuable even if she had to display it repeatedly before the Lord Hand would accept and even then Una consented to keep herself largely out of sight, even if the servants and cooks had to make sure their dishes passed by her purview before allowing to be presented. The purple wedding where King Joffrey met his ending- regardless of how fitting many saw it as -was still well on everyone's mind. And poison was an easy way to end a dragonrider, the likes of Hugh the Traitor showed that well.
Missandei ate and laughed and socialized, her gaze sharp and analytical as she watched the revelry. Numerous traditional Westerosi songs and plays were presented for the entertainment, as many went with giving their wedding gifts to the couple who were seated at the high table.
Meanwhile Dany ended up conversing with Willas, once again speaking of horses and even speaking of the unicorns of Skagos and the tattooed lizards of Sothoryos. Even if the Tyrell lord was still interested in acquiring a zorse, with Daenerys mentioning several traders and merchant lords across Essos which deal with the Jogos Nhai.
In all it was a successful celebration and wedding even if Missandei kept herself on alert out of habit. She had numerous knives up her sleeves, several poisoned rings, and envenomed painted nails and that was even without Ghidorah's lingering presence as the dragon would trample the entire grounds if he landed. Even if Missandei knew he would do such a thing without hesitation if Daenerys became threatened.
Still, it was well received wedding and the celebration finished with no unnecessary dramas. There had only been some instances of mischief yet lacking any true maliciousness. Missandei would count it a victory and helping to stabilized the Seven Kingdoms after their prolonged civil war. The return of the dragons even moreso.
Even if they all knew it was essentially preparing Westeros for the impending Long Night. Winter was temperamental and she knew this one would rapidly stretch across Essos which had such a heated climate compared to the Seven Kingdoms. Only Dorne came close yet even they were having sharp frosts and freezing nights now and Missandei knew it would only be a matter of time before everywhere was encased in an endless winter until the White Walkers and the Great Other was defeated.
Missandei still was unsure as to how they could kill a god, or what the Others had passing for a god, but she supposed they would simply have to go through everything and see if something worked. Dragonglass and fire worked on White Walkers and their undead, things such as the alchemist wildfire and Valyrian steel could be passable attempts as well. Dragonfire went without saying, even if Missandei knew Quaithe's words to her of Brynden Rivers still living beyond the Wall. He would be able to aid them further, if only they could find him. Much like the Child hidden within Old Valyria and Missandei felt the Heart and Bloodraven were connected somehow.
So much speculation, they were things she brooded over as the wedding ceremony and feasting finished and everyone retired for the night. She had filled journals with her thoughts and theories and possible means of destroying the beings beyond the Wall. Provided they simply were only located beyond the Wall to the north, as she knew about the existence of the YiTish mythos of the Blood Betrayal, where the Amethyst Empress was usurped and killed by her brother the Bloodstone Emperor which they claimed that the Maiden-Made-of-Light turned her back upon the world for the grievous sin and the Lion of Night, but there was also the Five Forts. Some speculated they were forged in Valyrian stone but the walls towered at a thousand feet high and said to have been crafted during the era of the Great Empire of the Dawn to defend against the demons of the Lion of Night.
Missandei rationalized that made sense, that the Others did not only dwell within the Lands of Always Winter in Westeros if the Long Night did span across the entire known world. The way the necromancy of the Others functioned, who could really be sure, but for all Missandei knew it would take only a single one to step into any type of crypt and raise hundreds. Timeless creatures who weaponized the corpses of their enemies, every opponent felled was simply more bodies for their army.
She knew some would look for a reason within the Others, for their attacks upon humans and their hunting of wildlings and their attempted destruction within the Long Night yet Missandei knew some needed no better reason than 'they are different' to attempt the mass killings of others. Her people were peaceful to the point they did not even eat meat, yet it did not stop the slavers from brutalizing them in every way possible until the Naathi retreated to the very heart of their forests to protect themselves and even then slavers would raid their villages at night. Missandei knew they had only just tentatively returned to near the coast, in the wake of Dany's destruction of the slavers but it would be a peace that had to be upheld in blood and fire. The Naathi had done nothing to provoke the violence against them, like so many others. They were victims of people who wished to harm them.
To Missandei, that is how simple the motivations of the Others could be. They could simply hate everyone with hot blood in their veins and that could be the extent of their attitude and nothing could change it. Daenerys would be open to diplomatic resolutions, Missandei knew, and her empress had shown interest in attempting to learn the Old Tongue and that of the Others or Children, but Missandei felt in this regard it would be for naught. She wanted nothing more than peace yet the last time the Others had been on the march they had attempted the annihilation of the known world.
As King's Landing began to slowly exhale its mass exodus of guests she spent quite some time discussing what their next course of action would be with her empress. The Wall was, technically, it's own little kingdom outside of the Seven Kingdoms. The lords and kings would not interfere in the workings of the Wall, of the rangers and lord commanders, the way those of the Wall were severed from their Houses and titles. The Land of Always Winter was wild and savage, freezing and with its own rules. It was why Daenerys had been able to gift the Wall with weapons and food and other resources, while also sending Kinvara to the aid of those trapped beyond. She did not technically need permission from the crown for such a thing, even if the king had not refused.
Yet at the same time it was obvious King Aegon saw no reason to bolster the power of the Wall. After eight thousand years of absence, next to none thought the Others were real. Even those at the Wall who recounted such a thing were treated as mad or simply spilling rumours like drunks at a tavern. There were nineteen castles along the Wall, yet only three of them were in any fit state. The current lord commander was attempting to restore the others to a fit condition but from what Missandei knew Jon Snow was not in a sane mind. There were so many conflicting reports about what had happened to the man yet when she conversed with Una it seemed he was a firewight as she guessed. Someone who died yet returned through R'hllor's flame yet none passed through the shadow of death and returned hale. His utter obsession with the Others, over all logic and reason and good manners, would be explained through such a thing. As Una explained, such resurrections much cling to an obsession over all else to 'live' in their state.
They needed to speak with him, and converse with those at the Wall. Even if the king did not believe them, it would be enough to cite fascination for the Wall to be allowed a visit.
It was why, a week after King Aegon had married Lady Alla, Daenerys spoke with the king and told him as such. The Wall was one of the nine wonders made by man and it was easy enough for the empress to explain how she had witnessed Qarth's three walls, the Titan of Braavos, and the Valyrian roads and also wished to see the Wall.
The king obviously didn't understand why she wished to see it, due to the miserable weather and the brothers at the Wall themselves being all convicts, but as Daenerys said she would have Ghidorah with her and Queen Alysanne had visited centuries ago with King Jaehaerys and their dragons. So she wished to go as well and witness the Wall as her ancestors had done so. King Aegon agreed, as did Queen Alla who Daenerys was fond of and vice versa, and they began preparations to sail there.
Well truthfully Missandei did while Daenerys wished to visits Essos upon Ghidorah, to personally meet with many of the cities to make sure everything was continuing smoothly in her absence. While they received consistent letters and hawks, with Missandei also keeping close contact with her ever growing butterflies, they could not become complacent. Regardless Ghidorah flew faster than any ship so upon the end of their tenth day in King's Landing Missandei and the Queensguard left with their ships while their empress went upon dragonback across the narrow sea.
They would reunite soon at the Wall and then their true purpose in Westeros could begin.
