Chapter 4: Rook's Rest

Summary:

🌟 Happy Matariki! 🌟

Chapter Text

The first true battle of King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra occurred above Rook's Rest. The castle was surrounded by fields to the west, piney woods and mist-shrouded hills to the north and the narrow sea to the east where the humped form of Driftmark could be seen. Upon the clearest days, even Dragonstone could be glimpsed upon the horizon.

Duskendale fell easily, taken by surprise by the King's forces with the town sacked, the ships in the harbor set afire, and Lord Darklyn was beheaded.

Rook's Rest was Ser Criston's next objective from his march eastward from King's Landing. Forewarned of their coming, Lord Staunton closed his gates and defied the attackers. Behind his walls, his lordship could only watch as his fields and woods and villages were burned, his sheep and cattle and smallfolk put to the sword. When provisions inside the castle began to run low he dispatched a raven to Dragonstone, pleading for the Black Queen's aid.

And nine days after the raven flew, Princess Rhaenys and the Red Queen were sent. Beloved daughter of Lady Jocelyn Baratheon and Prince Aemon Targaryen, faithful wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon the Sea Snake, mother and grandmother, with the she-dragon Meleys the Red Queen who had once been the bonded of Alyssa Targaryen, wife of Baelon.

Rhaenys may be five-and-fifty, but she was fearless and determined as she had been in her youth and she attacked Ser Criston Cole's forces without hesitation.

Archers, lowbownmen, crossbowmen, filled with air with arrows and quarrels while scorpions were launching the huge iron bolts that had once felled Meraxes and Rhaenys's namesake in Dorne. Meleys was shot several dozen times but all those blows did was anger the Red Queen as barbed and serrated heads pinged off the thick crimson scales of her belly; urging her dragon downwards, Meleys vomited out great blasts of fire and knights burned in their saddles, men dropped their spears and scattered before bursting into flames. Some hid beneath their shields but died like all the rest.

Rhaenys could heard Ser Criston's voice yelling, "Aim for the rider," through the smoke and flame and reek of burning flesh.

Ignorant fool, was all she thought before Meleys loosened another gout of fire. As if fighting a dragonrider was so simple, as if killing a Targaryen was so simple.

Eight hundred men burned alive, the fields below becoming blackened as grass died and corpses burned and great plumes of smoke coiled high in the air.

Veering about on pink wings, Meleyes flew over the scorching corpses of several knights and went hurtling after the white stallion where she spotted Ser Criston. The horse ran, fleeing towards the piney trees with the Red Queen in pursuit as she roared.

Then came an answering roar towards the west; Two more winged shapes appeared through the heavy cloud cover, with the usurper king astride Sunfyre the Golden, and his brother Aemond upon Vhagar. Criston Cole had sprung his trap, and Rhaenys had come snatching at the bait. Now the teeth closed round her.

Ah, so they have finally shown to reveal themselves, Rhaenys thought grimly. At last, the war was truly beginning. Now the Greens were choosing open combat, over slaughtering envoys.

Princess Rhaenys made no attempt to flee. Against Vhagar alone she might have had some chance, for the Red Queen was old and cunning and could out-fly any other dragon, while no stranger to battle. Against Vhagar and Sunfyre together, doom was certain.

However she could tell Aegon was young and arrogant; if he had any brains he would've let Vhagar's huge form take the lead. Instead the boy-king was several leagues ahead, upon the glittering gold form of his dragon, while Vhagar's sagging form lagged behind with ponderous sweeps of her ragged wings.

Vhagar may be that fool boy Aemond's mount, but she had been Laena's for decades and Rhaenys knew Vhagar was too far, too slow, to prevent Meleys from reaching Sunfyre first.

The Queen Who Never Was would die this day, but she'd been damned if she didn't make them pay for every inch of it. The gods were with her, with her family, and she felt that certainty. With a shout and a crack of her whip, she turned Meleys toward the interlopers. The Red Queen howled, smoke snorting from her nostrils as her pink wings swept down with thunderous cracks of air, and they flew to met their foe.

She could see how Sunfyre faltered in the air, a sharp shriek escaping the dragon and the way Aegon jerked at the reins when he realized Meleys would reach him far, far quicker than Vhagar could.

But by then the Red Queen was already upon him, the dragons colliding violently a thousand feet above the field of the smoking battlefield. The once gloomy, overcast day was lit up in dragonfire, and Sunfyre's blood felt like hot oil as it splatted across Rhaenys's face while Meleys sharp spines ripped into the golden dragon's neck and her barbed tail tore into his side.

Sunfyre was said to be the most beautiful of all dragons, but beauty was fleeting in war. His sleek gold scales tore open against Meleys's viciously spiked neck and great curved fangs. The delicate pink membranes of the frill along his tail was shredded, blood spitting from the wound.

Far below the people of Rook's Rest witnessed the dragons fight, could see Sunfyre flailing as he tried to dislodge the raging Red Queen even as a great shadow hurtled downwards.

Snapping and snarling, the two dragons tore at one another before Meleys managed to seize the edge of Sunfyre's flailing wing. A horrible noise like wet parchment tearing and Sunfyre screamed as a chunk of his wing was torn free.

Then Vhagar slammed into them from above, and Rhaenys felt something snap in her left arm as she was smashed against the saddle so hard her nose broke.

Meleys snarled, clawed feet digging harshly into Sunfyre's belly as the younger dragon screamed, before the Red Queen managed to sink her teeth into the pink membrane of Sunfyre's wing. Sunfyre spat flame and Rhaenys felt it lick against her face and the stench of burning hair but Meleys thick neck and the heavy saddle pommel protected her from worst of it.

Below the ground began to hurtling up towards them with Rhaenys ignoring the burn of her flesh, the unnatural bend in her arm, the blood of her broken nose, and instead screamed a vile curse at the two brothers in Valyrian. Damning them to the Fourteenth Hell and cursing any and all children of their blood to death and damnation even as vertigo flooded her brain as the dragons tumble down in a burning, roaring mass.

Vhagar's huge jaws loomed over Sunfyre, opening like the gates of death, fangs longer than a bastard sword and a crimson glow burning at the back of her gullet as heated air blasted across Rhaenys's face. She simply spat blood in the direction of Aemond.

But just before the ancient beast could vomit forth her flames a giant bat flew right into Vhagar's open maw. The she-dragon snapped her jaws shut, crushing the bat and making smoke and blood burst out from between her teeth.

Then another bat flew over Rhaenys's head with a high shriek, and then another and another and another, until a flock of the horse-sized bats were latching onto Vhagar's sagging neck, screeching and biting at her dull green scales. Frenzied and wild, their calls piercing her ears like whistles.

Rhaenys had no idea what was happening but she was not about to sit there dumbfounded as Vhagar disengaged from the two younger dragons with huge sweeps of her wings, the conquest beast snapping at the bats and biting several in half. The creatures were all focused upon Vhagar, even if their claws and fangs were unable to pierce Vhagar's ancient hide.

"Soves!" Rhaenys shouted, and Meleys jerked her head back.

There was an ugly noise and Sunfyre shrieked as the Red Queen kicked him away, fluttering pink membrane caught within her teeth. Meleys was injured, her left wing membrane torn up to the bone and her tail broken, but she was beating her wings hard enough they were momentarily upside down as Vhagar's huge wings buffeted them as the ancient dragon twisted, snapping and snarling at the wild flock attacking her.

Sunfyre went tumbling past, great bite marks in his wing and belly torn with crimson bleeding through his scales, but Rhaenys cracked her whip, ignoring the sharp pain in her arm and how she was partially blind in her left eye.

"Dracarys!"

Meleys tossed her spiked head, copper horns gleaming before she spat out a blast of fire, so hot and bright Rhaenys had to shut her eyes and it struck Sunfyre's shoulders and went rolling down his back as he hurtled past beneath her. The reek of burning flesh filled her nostrils, even as she could hear Aegon's scream of agony before Meleys was beating her wings furiously as the ground rose up to meet them.

The Red Queen's wings were torn enough she went spiraling downwards, but they held enough that when they landed it was jarring but not to death. Sunfyre went flailing overhead, still aloft, with Meleys tucking her injured wing close but still snarling as she turned to face her foe on the ground. Her broken tail dragged behind her but she was ready.

Above them Vhagar spat out flames that engulfed several more of the bats, sending their scorching carcasses tumbling downwards yet still the flock continued to harass her. Rhaenys still had no idea what those beasts were and why they had targeted Vhagar so firecely, but she had no time to dwell upon it when a distant roar caught the attention of all three; the bellow of a dragon.

From the east, from Dragonstone, speeding across the sea to them. Meleys shifted defensively on the ground, her broken tail oozing hot blood that smoked when it dripped down to the grass, but Rhaenys could see the distant barbed form quickly heading towards them over Blackwater Bay. It would be upon them soon.

For a moment Rhaenys thought Aemond would still try to kill her and Meleys as they lay wounded upon the ground but Sunfyre was flying as if drunk, low agonized keens escaping the gold dragon as it flailed its way south as it clearly fled the battle back to King's Landing. And the bats were still biting at Vhagar's head, even as she snapped and snorted, and the newcomer was fast approaching.

So Vhagar swerved in a great ponderous movement, following after Sunfyre's injured form even if the bats continued to harass her. She vomited forth flame, killing over half of the strange vermin but they continued to chase after her even as she escorted Sunfyre's blooding and battered form as the gold dragon began to limp back towards King's Landing with his wounded rider chained upon him.

The ambush had failed, Rhaenys and Meleys were badly injured but not dead.

Her steel and copper armour was bloodied and dented, but her gauntlets had kept her broken arm mostly in place. Rhaenys's broken nose was bleeding freely, the taste of blood thick in her mouth, and the side of her face was burning, vision in her left eye weak and blurry. Her side was increasingly in pain as the high of the fight ebbed, so perhaps some broken ribs, but much like Meleys they had managed to escape death.

Despite her growing pain Rhaenys managed to fumble through Meleys's saddlebag, using her uninjured arm to claw out a pot of burn ointment. She smeared it over her face, a shaky gasp escaping her as she rubbed the thick green paste into the bright red skin upon the left of her face.

Her hair had been partially burnt and her left eye was weeping, most likely blinded, but Rhaenys knew she was lucky- very lucky. Her tonics on hand would be enough to tide her over until she could see a proper healer, as she had escaped without any severe injuries even if she knew she would not be flying back into battle anytime soon.

The question though, what were the bats? Rhaenys knew of her husband's sailing across the world and the many odd sights, but giant horse-sized bats were not one of them, not even within the Green Hell of Sothoryos, much less at Rook's Rest. She never knew such beasts to dwell within the forests around Rook's Rest either and most animals fully avoided Vhagar instead of attacking her like the flock did.

Brooding for another time, however, as Rhaenys tucked her injured arm close as she stowed away the ointment. She slumped back into her saddle with a gasp of pain, Meleys settling down upon her belly with a pained groan as well.

The strange dragon was approaching, now past the sea and flying over the scorched fields to them and Rhaenys noted it was large; bigger than Moondancer certainly, but it was dark scaled. Not Syrax, nor Caraxes. So who-

As the dragon came closer, Rhaenys noted something strange about its silhouette that increased her confusion even more.

It had four legs, like a wolf, while still having great bat-like wings. It resembled no dragon she had ever seen, not even the wild ones upon Dragonstone, and it was black and red. Then it began to descend down towards her, the sun peeking through the clouds to brush across the newcomer's form, and Rhaenys realized something even more wrong with the beast.

It was a corpse.

The pain in her limbs gave way to a sharp drop in her stomach, cold flushing her skin as the dragon descended. The dragon's scales were black, sharp and thick like plates of armour, but upon its undersides the scales gave way to exposed crimson muscle. Even the wings were ragged and torn, red membranes shredded like ribbons yet somehow the beast was aloft and the wing bones were poking through. The dragon's face was entirely fleshless, black bone and fangs fully exposed with multiple horns with the largest curling forward like a rams, and its eyes a bright blue light within empty sockets as it came closer and closer towards her.

Meleys snarled beneath her, the Red Queen raising back on all fours with a hiss of pain but ready to die fighting. But Rhaenys felt a great wave of grief; she must have indeed fallen in the battle, and this was a wraith of the Stranger or Balerion coming to retrieve her, to lead her to the afterlife-

"Grandmother!"

The shout made her freeze mid lament, even as Meleys bristled and snorted smoke. But Rhaenys recognized that voice, even moreso the fluffy hair that poked out from over the beast's shoulder.

It was her grandson Lucerys, sitting at the shoulder blades of the corpse dragon and now she saw the saddle he was perched upon; as dull black as its scales, and formed into the shape of jagged, backwards sweeping wings even as the dragon flared out its tattered wings to begin to land. The only colour upon the black saddle was the Velyaron seahorse at the nose, hammered out in chips of mother-of-pearl even if it was strangely skeletal.

When the dragon landed, on all fours like a wolf with its wings tucked against its side, Lucerys jumped from its saddle with nary a care for the fall.

It was still strange to see him with the snowy-white locks and glowing red stare, but she hastily soothed Meleys as the Red Queen hissed at him. Lucerys paused in his approach, waiting until Rhaenys managed to order Meleys down onto her belly even if she could tell the dragon was disgruntled.

She let Lucerys approach, the boy clambering up Meleys neck spines to reach the saddle. He fussed much like Gerardys when he saw her wounds up close, but his hands were blessedly cool against her seared skin as she directed him to several more bottles and ointments within her saddlebags, even as she shared the information of the fight at Rook's Rest.

"You had him, Grandmother," Lucerys said in admiring tones as he smeared thick brown paste at the remains of her left ear. "I could see, if it were not for Vhagar you would have killed the Usurper king."

"Mores the pity I didn't, but he will not be flying out to battle soon," Rhaenys grimaced. She noted how easily Lucerys balanced upon Meleys shoulder and saddle, as nimble as a cat. It was strange, but Rhaenys decided to agree with her husband for the time being; that Lucerys return and odd changes were a boon in the coming war.

The fact he had flown to her rescue spoke to that.

"What is that beast?" Rhaenys managed to ask when her ear was covered, even as Lucerys had to carefully pluck off several scorched wads of her hair from her seared skin.

Lucerys looked back to the corpse dragon, which seemed completely uninterested in Meleys who was still softly snarling at it. Instead it just stood there placidly, on all fours like a horse with wings tucked against its side, despite all thought that it should be nothing more than a dead mangled heap.

"I listened to the sea," Lucerys finally said. "I- I spoke to Rhaena and Grandfather about it, about the voices and sensations I could hear within the ocean. They said I should heed it, that I should pull those I could feel towards me. And I did so, and Calypso came to me."

"Calypso," the name was strange and unknown to her.

"The same for the fell bats," Lucerys said as he put away the various bottles. "Though I don't quite know why bats were in the sea. Or the scurvy dogs. But I suppose its like how Grandfather says, everything goes to the sea in the end.."

Rhaenys snorted, regretting it when her wounds throbbed, "He will be very pleased to hear that. Though why are you here? Our queen sent only myself to deal with the siege of Rook's Rest, as the ambush was unknown to us."

Lucerys shifted, his red eyes skittering off her.

"Lucerys," Rhaenys began slowly, "Did you leave Dragonstone without informing your mother?"

"I told Rhaena," Lucerys said, a mulish set to his features.

Rhaenys groaned. She was not looking forward to that, even if she still was grateful for Lucerys's intervention. But first, Meleys needed her injured wing stitched; in her current state even limping to the beach of Blackwater Bay might damage her permanently.

However Rhaenys had been told through word-of-mouth by her grandmother on how to apply aid to dragons, secrets told only to those of dragonsblood, and she had the appropriate thick thread and dragonbone needle in her saddlebags. Meleys would get more sufficient aid in Dragonstone for both her tail and other wounds upon her body, but they would have to stitch her wing in their current location so she could limp to the beach.

Due to her broken arm, Rhaenys had to instruct her grandson as she urged Meleys to settle upon her belly with her injured wing stretched out. The tear was within the largest part of the wing membrane, stretching from the edge all the way to the curve of the wing fingers.

Rhaenys soothed and patted Meleys as the she-dragon grumbled while Lucerys began the slow task of stitching the torn membrane back together. Luckily her grandson had been taught how to stitch sails by Laenor, so he quickly began to thread the torn flesh back together using the gleaming black thread which had been soaked within a specialized fluid to fix dragonskin.

As Lucerys tended to Meleys wings, Rhaenys kept a sharp eye upon the surrounding landscape; Ser Criston and his surviving forces had fled back to King's Landing when Sunfyre, Vhagar and Meleys had fought but with the Red Queen grounded she would not be surprised if those opportunistic snakes would come slithering back. However as Lucerys slowly worked his way down Meleys wing, it was Lord Staunton and a small retinue that ventured from Rook's Rest and approached them.

Calypso moved then; before that, the dead beast that simply been standing still and immobile. Now with the approaching men that it moved, shifting on all fours to face the approaching group and placing itself between them and the strangers as its ragged wings flared out.

However a sharp call from Lucerys immediately made the dragon go back into its odd idle stance. The exposed black bones of its skull gleamed like iron in the sun but it sat down upon its haunches like a wolf would.

"Princess Rhaenys!" Lord Staunton called, dismounting his horse when the animal grew too nervous. "And...Prince Lucerys?" the last was more hesitant, the man casting frightened glances at Calypso's rotting form which just stared back at him with its glowing blue eyes.

"Lord Staunton, I am glad I reached you in time," Rhaenys decided to simply ignore the concept of the dead dragon and behave as if it were natural. Beneath her, Meleys grumbled even as Rhaenys asked, "How fares your hold and your people?"

"Duskendale sacked with Lord Darklyn beheaded but we had enough warning to bar the gates here. But we were unable to prevent Criston from burning the fields or killing my smallfolk and livestock. I am grateful for the dragon queen's aid, even with the regret of your injuries."

"You are one of the vassals of the Black council," Rhaenys assured him. "It is only a pity the Greens chose to brutalize your people to try and lure me out. However my grandson came to my aid and the Usurper king has fled back to King's Landing."

"Grandmother would have killed Aegon and his golden beast as well, if it were not for Vhagar," Lucerys added. He was finishing the edge of Meleys torn wing, dragonblood staining his hands. Rhaenys chose to ignore how he licked his fingers clean.

She was rather amused by her grandson's insistence about bragging about her searing Aegon, but she assured Lord Stauton much the same. The people of Rook's Rest had witnessed most of the fighting from afar, and had seen how badly Sunfyre had been flailing as the dragon retreated. She also confirmed in managed to catch Aegon with Meleys's fire, far more than the glancing blow she was given.

"Luck would have it, that craven will remained holed up within King's Landing licking his wounds," Lord Staunton said even as Lucerys tied off the thread.

Rhaenys had to be helped down from Meleys's saddle by Lucerys, and she noted how he just picked her up and carried her out of Meleys's reach. The Red Queen was exhausted, her tail dragging, but the tools to reset the bone were back within the Dragonsmont. She pushed reassurance down their bond and her dragon huffed.

She let one of the grizzled men with Lord Stauton see to her, the man well used to battle wounds. He was able to set her broken nose with his thumbs, even if the dull crack made her ears ring and she had to bite back her shout of pain. The man also let her use his horse, to make their way to the beach with Lord Stauton and his men in escort and Lucerys walking by her side. Meanwhile the great dead beast took to the air, circling overhead like a vulture as Rhaenys asked the lord about the state of Rook's Rest.

One of the great bats returned when Rhaenys was to urge Meleys towards the beach, the shrill screech gaining all of their attention, as the bat flew down.

It was just as interesting as the dragon, a bat nearly the same size as Moondancer. She watched in fascination as it landed, scuttling up to Lucerys who rested a hand upon its furry brown head. Then it was back up in the sky, quickly making its way east towards Driftmark.

"It will let the nearest ship in the blockade know," Lucerys explained, as if a giant bat passing along messages was perfectly normal. "And that way Meleys can be sailed to Dragonstone posthaste. Aegon and Aemond won't attack us with Sunfyre so wounded. And if they dare, I will face them with Calypso. Perhaps they can kill me again, perhaps not."

"It means myself and Meleys are unable to protect the blockade from this attack, and Aegon will likely be able to fight another day," Rhaenys said, as one of Lord Stauton's man helped her into the horse's saddle. The movement jostled her broken arm and she shuddered, sweat beading her temple.

"But that day won't be soon," Lucerys said easily. Rhaenys wondered when she felt so secure in her grandson's presence; when he said he would fight his two uncles, deep within her bones she felt utter faith in him. Knowing he had been gifted by the Merling Court helped, as did him flying to her aid with those strange beasts.

But Aegon was not killed; like herself, he was injured but would recover as would their dragons. Still, she gave that boy a harsh wake up about the true aspect of war. It was not as easy as stealing a throne and locking people in dungeons. Now he would suffer the consequences.

Watching Meleys slowly walk on all fours to Rook's Rest pained her, and reminded her of the risk as well. Meleys had been her companion for so long, so to see her wounded left Rhaenys angry but she suppressed it. Her anger would find its end, but right now they needed to retreat and regroup. And as the gods saw fit to bless them, Lucerys had been given his wings even if they were not Arrax's own but her grandson seemed far more lively, reminding her of how he used to be before Storm's End.

By the time they reached the beach of Rook's Rest at Blackwater Bay, pace sedate to compensate for the Red Queen's wounds, a Velaryon ship was already sailing into the dock. The bat was flapping about overhead, darting past the mast and sending the flag snapping, as nimble as a seagull.

The ship had its deck quickly cleared, as Rhaenys called out to the crew. She recognized Captain Rhogar who quickly descended down to the docks to greet her, even as Meleys dared to take a few flaps of her wings to land upon the deck of the ship as the crew stayed at a safe distance. The wood creaked, the deck shuddering, but easily held under the Red Queen's weight. Meleys had done ship landings before, and Rhaenys was satisfied her companion would be safe.

"Do you have supplies to spare for Rook's Rest?" Rhaenys asked, glancing over to the dock. Her vision was all but gone in her left eye, and the feeling of pain was starting to grow too large to ignore, "They have been set upon for days and the Greens scorched their fields and flocks."

"Aye, we do and I have already given the order for our spare food stores to be handed over and we can alert Driftmark to send more. Yet it was so strange," Captain Rhogar said, looking to the sky where the bat was still flying about. "But the moment that bat landed before me, I knew what I had to do. What had happened here."

"Prince Lucerys summoned it," Rhaenys said, resisting the urge to shrug even as the captain began to usher her up the gangway with slow even steps. "Perhaps the Merling King knew we needed more wings to keep the skies clear."

"Aye, I would say he does. I've heard, about the Velaryon prince. What has happened to him. The Undying, they say he is and now I see it to be true."

The Undying. Seemed fitting for her grandson and what he had suffered through. Especially as his living dead dragon landed at the docks, and Rhaenys watched from Meleys side as her grandson jumped easily upon its spiked back and it swept up into the sky, torn membranes fluttering as it readied itself to escort them to Dragonstone.

The Undying indeed.

Notes:

The undead dragon

If you're curious, as a Lord Lucerys constantly has passive effects around him; he has Leadership and Encourage which is why people who are his allies start feeling so secure and safe around him, while he also inspires Fear/Terror in people who are his enemies. Like I said, there's video game mechanics going on here haha he can also sense Loyalty and can summon Vampire Coast units (as you saw from the fell bats and scurvy dogs) Calypso was a special case, as usually Lords don't get special mounts until later on, but as a Targaryen he could basically access her immediately.
