Harry's Guide to Raising Dragons and Nobles

Chapter 5: Chapter 5

Notes:

Corlys Velaryon's first appearance of many! From now on we'll also be getting a variety of different POVs too so watch out for that. Please let me know if you want me to mark the POVs more clearly, or if it's clear enough as is.

Corlys may seem a little OOC in this chapter, but I think it fits considering the situation he finds himself in. He's about to get his entire world flipped upside down and he knows it.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

As soon as he saw the dragon on the horizon, Lord Corlys Velaryon ordered the ship make anchor at the closest pile of rocks they could find. It took them an hour, and even then it was indeed just a pile of lone rocks in the middle of the sea.

The Smoking Sea of the Valyrian Peninsula was to the north of them. The dragon had long since disappeared but Corlys was willing to wait hours, days, weeks just for another glimpse, just to make sure his months at sea weren't catching up with him. Others had seen it too, a great dark shape swooping high and low; Corlys even thought he'd heard a roar before it had disappeared. But mass hallucinations while out at sea weren't uncommon. The myth of the mermaid came from addled sailors seeing buxom part-women when in fact it was manatees accosting their ship.

As the hours passed, the whispers grew. What if it was false? What if it was just a bird? What if the dragon had a rider who was now on his way to notify any other survivors of the Doom? What if they attacked?

Corlys ignored them all. He was Valyrian. If there was a secret community of survivors, they would surely recognise kin. If it was a bird, then perhaps the Peninsula was inhabitable once again and he would become the first sailor to explore the ancient ruins. If it was false... he hoped it wasn't false.

He was prepared when the dragon reappeared. Shouts of glee rang across the deck as his men all pointed at the sky, at the great sight that was a true Valyrian dragon.

He was prepared for the dragon's shape to grow larger as it approached them. He ignored the murmurs of fear.

He was not prepared for the rider to not actually be riding the dragon, but rather a slim stick.

Swooping down, the dragon landed on the outcropping of rocks and Corlys absently noted its identifiers: a deep green thing rippling with muscle, wider than any of the dragons of that size he'd ever seen, and larger than Seasmoke - so perhaps 15 to 20 years of age. The man, meanwhile, gracefully approached them on his flying stick - a broom, Corlys noted - with a beaming smile and seemingly no regard for any of his men's reactions, ranging from gaping to muttering to praying.

To his shame, Corlys could only gape, stuck staring at the stranger silently.

The man, seemingly uncaring, waved at him from a few feet away and a few feet high and opened his mouth to speak.

It did not help Corlys' state that the sounds coming from the man's mouth were not of any language he knew. It sounded like hissing, almost. The man stopped hissing and clearly waited for a response, but the old sailor was incapable of one. He frowned and looked towards the dragon, which hissed at him. For some reason, the man's expression cleared and he turned back to Corlys and hissed again.

He paused for a response and hissed at him again.

And again.

And again.

"Hello, can you understand me yet?"

Oh, words!

"Uh- yes?"

The man beamed and his dragon let out what seemed to be a grunt of approval.

"Amazing! I'm Harry Potter and you have no idea how happy I am to see you."

The introduction worked to jolt Corlys out of his stupor. Gods what a fool he made, staring stupidly at the first ever true Valyrian anyone had seen since the Doom! What an impression to make to a member of the greatest civilization ever known! He brought himself back to the present with difficulty and bowed his head in deference.

"Delighted to make your acquaintance, Lord Potter, I am Lord Corlys Velaryon of Driftmark."

Before the man - Lord Potter - could open his mouth to respond, a noise from the dragon had his head swivelling to the side at speed. A frown on his face, he hissed back, and Corlys realised the two were speaking to each other! His mind blanked out once again as he understood the implications - to speak to a dragon as one would speak to another man! - and by the time he had pulled himself together again, Lord Potter was waving at the dragon as he flew away.

"Your dragon is leaving my Lord?" He asked dejectedly. A dragon of Valyria!

Potter shrugged, a curve to his mouth. "Don't mind Loki." He said. "He was as excited as I was to see you and he was disappointed that he couldn't understand you. He'll wait for me to come home and tell them everything."

"Them?"

"Yeah, Loki's siblings." Siblings...? "Anyway, hi! Permission to board?"

So Lord Potter had been waiting for permission before stepping off of his broom. How considerate. It wasn't the done thing to step foot on a man's ship without his permission, but for a Valyrian dragonlord, Corlys would excuse anything.

"Of course, my Lord."

"Oh gosh! Please, just call me Harry." Lord Potter dropped to the ground and pulled the broom from between his legs, and beamed back up at Corlys. "I'm so happy to see you!" He repeated. "Tell me everything about yourself."

Harry Potter talked so much.

At first, Corlys had done his best to oblige the dragonlord's request and began speaking of himself, his House and family, and his lands. Harry asked so many questions that Corlys wondered if he was dim - to not know of the entire Westerosi continent? To be surprised at the continuation of Targaryen House and their dragons? Did this boy know nothing? - which led to Corlys asking questions, which led to Harry telling everything about himself.

Everything.

Corlys discovered Harry was not in fact a descendant of the Valyrian dragonlords from before the Doom and in fact had only appeared here through some mysterious magic almost a decade ago; time which he spent with no other company than that of dragons. Ten of them. That he hatched, alone, with his magic ("To be fair, Galene managed Persephone's hatching pretty much all by herself."). He knew he had spent most of that time raising said dragons and studying his magic beyond anything anyone in his homeland would have expected. He knew of Harry's work identifying the mutated and monstrous creatures of Valyria. He knew of Harry's past as a warrior.

Eventually, it was understood that although Harry was a noble by birth, he had been orphaned and raised as a commoner, never knowing of his heritage - or even the existence of nobility in his land - until after his arrival when he had read of the matter in the books bequeathed to him by his noble godfather. Corlys supposed he could forgive the boy's behaviour in such circumstances; it seems Harry's homeland was much more informal and the nobility a much less present figure, only present in politics while outside of that matter anyone of any class mingled incessantly.

It is for the adults to educate the children, and the adults in Harry's life seemed to have deemed his heritage too irrelevant for him to know.

Because of this, Harry was both confoundingly knowledgeable and ignorant, a blabbermouth that would never survive the cutthroat politics of King's Landing - if not for his magic.

The boy used his magic as freely as he shared his weaknesses, and Corlys was left to simply gape in wonder once more each time. Shoving a full-sized broom into his regular-looking pockets, summoning maps from across the captain's cabin in a fit of excitement, lighting all the candles; all done with a flick of a stick that seemed to appear and disappear at will.

After a few hours of Harry's company, Corlys concluded that he was 1- completely addled, 2- starving for human connection, 3- disconcertingly trusting and 4- immensely powerful. Corlys dismissed any notion of formalities and titles almost immediately after the boy started speaking, taking in stride Harry's idea that he was neither anyone's superior nor inferior.

Still, Corlys would have his work cut out for him if he was to bring the wizard back with him to court. The most important thing was to ensure Harry stopped revealing so much; Corlys could think of six ways off the top of his head to manipulate this boy or have him be subservient to him in some way. He wouldn't of course. Corlys was ambitious but he wasn't stupid nor prone to great risks, but he knew that would not be the case for everyone in Westeros. Someone would eventually underestimate Harry's magic and overestimate their own guile, and the wizard would either end up killing them or disappearing completely, taking his magic, his dragons and his eggs along with him.

Because it was clear, the boy might be naively trusting and far to eager to please, but he was intelligent. He read between the lines and heard the hidden implications, making connections and observations on the noble class of Westeros that Corlys hadn't intended to share. The Lord of Driftmark would not be the first to underestimate this boy's intelligence, and he had no doubt that whatever manipulations anyone attempted would be quickly seen through.

He supposed he was lucky he had been too shocked by the boy's appearance to plot anything against him.

Corlys decided then and there to take on Harry's strange habit of constant honesty. If they were to return to Westeros together, he would not have the boy unprepared, nor would he have the boy feeling betrayed because Corlys had decided to be frugal with relevant information.

He wanted this wizard bound to him. That wouldn't happen through subjugation, nor through manipulation. With how the boy behaved though and from the information he had shared from his school days, Corlys believed it could be achieved through honest comradery and friendship.

What a novel idea.

"Oh yeah the cities are totally amazing." Harry said as they moved on to speak of Valyria - after a long discussion about the proper names and the history of the Peninsula. This was the only man alive who knew what the ruins actually looked like! "Big, massive streets, perches all over the place - presumably for the dragons, large mansions made of like marble and smooth white stone. It looks like it was a place of real wealth before everything exploded."

They had been speaking for hours. So long in fact that his crew had stopped trying to listen in at the door, and the food and drink had been brought out long ago - a fact that delighted Harry and began an hour long conversation on the poor range of dietary resources of Valyria.

"And dragon eggs, you said?" Corlys asked eagerly.

"So many!" Harry leaned forward over the dining table, his mead sloshing tried to get as close to the sailor as he could. "I found at least one in every major manor. I don't know what the manors are like in Westeros, but when I say manor, I mean like massive, at least three floors high and really spread out too. There was so much space, I could have fit like 10 of the Dursley's houses one one of them, and they might have been what you call commoners, but they weren't poor."

"You mentioned other buildings too, an arena?"

Harry nodded. "I think so. Either an arena or some sort of justice building. Somewhere with a lot of viewing space anyway."

"It may have been the Senate chambers, where the 40 archons presided."

"Ooh maybe? Or wait - wouldn't that have been in the actual city of Valyria?"

Corlys slumped. "You're right."

From what Harry had described, although he had visited the city of Valyria, his home base was actually in a city on the southern tip of that same island - a city whose name had been lost to the Doom.

"But hey, wouldn't each city have needed like a city council or something? Maybe it was that?"

That was true. Even in Westeros every settlement larger than a simple village had a town hall where the elders would gather to decide on small matters or give judgement during disputes that were too unimportant for the lord to care for personally. Valyria was known for its great government- at least over those considered to be citizens. The less said on the matter of the Freehold's slavery habits, the better. The southern coastal city of Valyria may have a name that was lost to time, but it was known that it was a great city, larger even than Oldtown.

"What I wouldn't give to see it all for myself." Corlys bemoaned.

He found after a few false starts, this new policy of total unreserved honesty wasn't too hard to grasp. It was one thing to be honest with factual information, but it was another entirely to be honest with one's thoughts, but Harry's earnest openness and eagerness to both give and take was contagious. To just be a man, sharing information with another, for no particular reason and with no specific goal wasn't something Corlys was accustomed to. But if the man with ten dragons at his beck and call could allow himself the freedom to trust, then who was Corlys to not offer reciprocity?

Not to mention, the more Corlys shared, the more eager Harry became if that was even possible. He tried to focus on the fact that his chances at getting the boy and his dragons to come back to Westeros with him were climbing with each hour, but instead could only think of Valyria and the stories Harry told of it.

To see it with his own eyes would be the greatest achievement of his life, of his House. The streets, the architecture, the halls of government, the dragon nests - gods the armoury! To simply step foot on Valyrian soil, dead as it may be, would be the dream of a lifetime but to explore the armoury and bring home the countless works of Valyrian steel he was sure to find... Thought was heady enough to make him shake.

"I mean I could take you."

Thankfully Corlys had long since put his dignity to the side, because he almost topple out of his chair at the offer. He stared at Harry with wide eyes and the boy simply stared back.

So earnest! So giving and welcoming - this boy could singlehandedly be the greatest ally House Velaryon had ever seen.

"You would?" Corlys croaked.

"Of course!" The boy grinned in response. "You've done so much and shared so much with me, how couldn't I? This is your dream and it doesn't cost me a single thing."

"I would owe you a debt so great..."

Waving his hand dismissively, Harry laughed. "You gave me something to drink that wasn't conjured water, honestly this is the least I could do."

"I - very well, when - when can we go?"

Corlys wasn't expecting the boy to push his mug to the side and stand immediately, but he seemed almost as excited as Corlys was, toppling his chair and lifting his fist to the sky.

"Let's go now!"

Unable to make any sound come from his mouth no matter how hard he tried, the old sailor simply stood silently and followed his guest out onto the deck. It was only when Harry took out his broom that it occurred to him that he'd be flying to Valyria on an enchanted stick.

"Oh here, you'll need this." Harry removed a necklace with a wooden disk hanging from it and held it out. "This will let you breath comfortably. I'll do a bubble-head on myself but I won't be able to talk to you because of it, just FYI."

Corlys didn't understand half of what the wizard had just said to him, but took the necklace regardless and eyed the broom warily.

For Valyria.

Corlys had flown on Meleys before. Just once, before his wedding. Rhaenys had insisted she couldn't possibly marry someone her dragon didn't approve of, so he reluctantly agreed to visit the dragon and somehow later ended up on her back, tightly clutching the woman he wished to make his wife, and trying not to look down as they sped through the sky.

This was not the same.

It was one thing to fly a several-tonne flying beast, it was entirely another to fly a thin piece of wood. Although the trip was infinitely smoother - no ups and downs from the constant beating wings - it also felt infinitely less safe. Their transport was so small, if he looked down Corlys could believe he was flying with no support at all, a thing he knew would delight many but he was not one of those. His feet belonged firmly on land. Or the deck of a ship.

Thankfully, Harry didn't seem to mind the tight grip Corlys had on his waist at all.

It only took a few hours to reach the city, flying over the healthy waters, the Smoking Sea, and a few miles of dead land before the vast array of buildings could be seen. Harry even did him the favour of slowly circling a few times before landing.

The unnamed city was a delight to behold. Corlys may have shed a few tears. Reports of the city's size were well founded and white ruins spread all the way to the horizon, towers jutting out as high as he could see. Even from this distance he could tell they were built for sturdiness, with large outcropping balconies that he imagined dragons of varying sizes could have perched. Once, the buildings would have gleamed in the sun, but with the layer of dust and the unnatural cloud covering they were dull - but no less beautiful.

Eventually, Harry led them to the city limits where a large number of manor estates sat. A dragon roared, and Harry waved his arm madly with a cry.

Within moments, the pair had landed in the street under the watchful eyes of ten dragons, all stood between them and the manor which Corlys assumed was Harry's. Their feet touched the ground and the broom disappeared form between his legs, and from one moment to the next Harry was gone, rushing towards his dragons with a great smile on his face while Corlys struggled to get his land-legs back.

While Harry was busy greeting and talking to his dragons, Corlys observed them all.

Their sizes were staggering to witness considering their ages. Seasmoke was twelve years old, and yet most of these dragons were larger than his son's, three of them being twice his size. Corlys thought the largest silver one was even approaching half the size of Meleys, who was over thirty. It was unlikely the poisonous air of this land was what allowed them to grow so fast, so Corlys had to assume it was their freedom. To know that they were hampering their dragons' growth for supposed tradition back home was a bitter pill to swallow.

He'd be speaking with Rhaenys. Meleys and Seasmoke would no longer be chained, and he would ensure Viserys knew of his observations too.

Watching Harry interact with his dragons was a delight. He'd never known a rider to be unaffectionate with their mount, but to Harry his dragons were clearly the world. He hugged the silver's face, scratched the blue's brow, and thumped Loki's wing before he was set upon by the three smallest and he simply laughed as the yellow and red clambered all over him and the orange made him lose his footing.

Harry's strange way of referring to his dragons as his children made sense now, Harry saw. He acted exactly as Corlys would when first seeing Laenor and Laena after coming home from a long trip, and he expected Harry's hurried hissing was a detailed account of all that had occurred since meeting Corlys, just as Corlys would recount his adventures to his children over dinner.

Finally, Harry turned back to his guest and gestured for him to come closer.

"Corlys, these are my kids." He said, and began pointing to each of them. "In order of age - Galene, Loki, Artemis, Juno and Eros who are twins, Freya and Nike are also twins, Janus and Bellona."

As each dragon was named - or more relevantly pointed at, as they did not understand Common - they bowed their heads and him and he bowed his in return. The orange, Janus, seemed to be wiggling in excitement the entire time, and to his surprise, the last dragon to be introduced squeaked at him and leapt into his arms.

Laughing, Harry offered no help while Corlys struggled to contain the excitable dragon hatchling. This Bellona had clearly decided that Corlys' hair was the perfect perch and there wasn't anything he could do about it.

"And this," Harry continued as if there had been no interruption, lifting the tiny little yellow that had clearly just hatched days ago. "is Persephone, Galene's daughter."

In a mere ten minutes - although perhaps the hours Harry spent boasting of hid children should be counted? - Corlys' notions of dragons changed drastically.

They were intelligent enough to speak, even if it wasn't any human language, and they could adopt human mannerisms like bowing and nodding. If Harry was to believed, some of his children even had interest in the sciences, and they all were invested in the archaeological and historical knowledge they could glean from the ruins and remains of the Valyrian cities they had explored. One of the dragons - Artemis, Corlys thinks - was even supposedly interested in the arts!

None of what they knew of dragons was accurate. It was known dragons were intelligent - 'almost as much as men!' people said - but not how much. Corlys would never say to a Targaryen's face that they treated their beloved bonded as a pet, but seeing Harry interact with these dragons, it was perhaps closer to the truth than any dragonrider would like to hear.

"You have a beautiful family, Harry."

Seeing the inside of Harry's home was just as wondrous as stepping foot in a Valyrian city. Not the house itself - although it was of course impressive as anything Valyrian was, Corlys had seen many impressive homes in his life. No, what impressed the old Lord was all the evidence of magic.

Harry gave him a tour of his home, while all the dragons that could fit within followed and those that could not had their faces shoved through doors or windows. The ground floor was as one would expect of a home: well furnished and clean despite the ratty appearance of the carpets, a large space where Harry and his dragons could play and learn, where they could rest and read one of the many - thousands! - of books shelved along the walls. Corlys flicked through a few, promising himself he would take at least a little time to read some of these properly, and was astounded at some of the information he gleaned. Most of it was instructions on magic, useless to him though no less fascinating, but there were snippets here and there that mentioned other sentient races, great magical wars, and a plethora of non-sentient magical creatures.

It was the higher floors that were the most impressive. Harry took him on a tour of his research rooms: his office, where Harry kept his own observational and scientific journals; his research lab which held the incredible runic desk that assisted in so much of Harry's work, where the wizard had made most of his advancements in magic and had learned how to survive this wasteland on limited resources; and his potions lab, with its walls covered on one side with colourful vials and bottles and the other side with cabinet upon cabinet of magical ingredients.

Of all the impressive magic seen so far, it was the potions that intrigued Corlys the most. As soon as he mentioned that one didn't need magic to brew nor consume these magical potions, Corlys' mind spun with the implications.

"- I mean, really the only reason they're not available to the wider non-magical population is because of the ingredients." Harry said. "Can you imagine telling a Muggle to go get a thestral heartstring?"

"A what?"

"Exactly!"

"Harry..." Corlys began carefully. Did the boy not know what he had? "you could make a lot of money with these healing potions."

The wizard simply stared in confusion. "What would I need money for?"

Perhaps afraid, Corlys didn't answer. He didn't want to assume that Harry would agree to return to Westeros, but he found himself unwilling to consider otherwise. What would happen if Harry refused? Nothing. Nothing would change, life would go on as it always had.

What a tragedy that would be.

After being treated to a meal that Harry had cooked himself, Corlys was led to one of the unused bedrooms on the first floor and treated to the sight of the wizard completely cleaning and restoring all the furniture within seconds.

"It's late." Harry said. "I still have to make my bubble-head necklace so I'll leave you for the evening and we can go out to explore tomorrow."

"May I borrow one of your books?"

"Of course."

Corlys nodded his thanks, and hesitated. "I cannot stay long, perhaps a week or two before we must continue our journey home. In that time, would you consider returning with us?"

Surprised but visibly pleased, Harry smiled at him. "You'd take me back to Westeros with you?"

I would find myself much poorer for your loss, Corlys thought, but he would sound like a lovesick fool if he said that aloud.

"I would." He said instead.

"Thank you. I'll - I'll think about it."

The old Lord nodded and closed the door, trying to ignore how his hands trembled.
