Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Shadow of George Reed

The alliance between Bella and Jason, though born of necessity, was a fragile spark in the middle of a storm: volatile, intimate, and haunted. Each late-night meeting and whispered theory began to pull them closer, but this wasn't about rekindled love. Not yet. It was about survival.

They dug through spreadsheets and financial audits like archaeologists unearthing a corrupted empire. Bella's sharp instincts and Jason's determination to right his past wrongs created a synergy neither had expected. But beneath the growing teamwork, a darker force was stirring one more dangerous than Veronica: George Reed.

Jason's trusted CFO, Ryan Cole, joined their inner circle. After reviewing the video footage of Veronica's deception, Ryan's reaction was visceral. "This isn't just corporate sabotage," he said grimly. "It's personal. And calculated."

With Ryan's help, they began connecting dots that stretched further back than Veronica's time with Reed International. Bella found something Jason had missed transaction records linked to offshore accounts and shell corporations. They weren't part of Veronica's scheme. They predated her.

"These go back years," Bella said, sliding a folder toward Jason. "Linked to George's personal trust. Look at this pattern. It's like someone's been cleaning up messes behind the scenes."

Jason's face went cold. "My father has always played the long game. Ruthless. Controlled." The implication settled like ice in the room. "When we split… he told me you were a liability."

That night, Ryan returned with a disturbing revelation. "Jason," he said, his tone grave, "one of George's trusts paid a PI firm. Five years ago. Labeled 'Sensitive acquisition: Bella Quinn.' It happened the week she left."

Jason stood frozen, his heart pounding. "My father destroyed my marriage."

He dialed George Reed. The old man's voice slithered through the speaker. "Jason. Why are we discussing ancient history? Focus on Reed International's legacy."

"You mean your legacy," Jason said tightly. "What did you do to Bella?"

George scoffed. "That girl was a threat to your future. I did what was necessary."

The call ended. The line was dead. But the war had begun.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Bella received a visit from her mother, Martha. Pale and nervous, she appeared uninvited, bearing the kind of dread that aged a woman overnight.

"I heard you're working with Jason again," Martha said, her hands shaking. "You have to be careful. George Reed… he's dangerous."

Bella narrowed her eyes. "What do you know, Mom?"

"Just… stories. Rumors."

But Bella saw it—guilt. Fear. Silence bought with money. Suddenly, Ryan's earlier mention of "hush payouts" came back like a ghost. Could her mother be hiding something?

Now, Bella and Jason weren't just exposing corporate treason. They were unraveling a generational web of lies, power, and betrayal. Veronica was just the face of it. George Reed was the architect. And someone very close to Bella maybe even her own mother had helped him.

The truth wasn't just painful. It was radioactive.

And it was closing in.
