Kimi found herself unable to argue with Kolton's observation. Her brother had always been fiercely protective, sometimes to a fault.
"He really is the best brother anyone could ask for. I don't know what I'd do without him."
Kolton's eyebrow arched as he studied her profile in the dim light of the dashboard.
"That may be true, but what happens when he decides to stand between us?"
"Between us?" The words tumbled out before she could stop them, confusion evident in her voice.
A heavy sigh escaped Kolton's lips as he redirected his attention to the winding road ahead. The corner of his mouth twitched upward in what might have been amusement or something darker.
"Sweetheart, your innocence is going to be my undoing. Sometimes I wonder if I'm too damaged for someone like you."
Heat flooded Kimi's cheeks at his words. She quickly turned toward the passenger window, grateful for the cool evening air streaming through the partially open glass.
