My heart raced as I stared at Rhys's text message. One hour. Just sixty minutes until he arrived, and something in his tone told me this wasn't going to be a happy reunion.
I paced my dorm room, my mind spinning with fears and doubts. Had I made a terrible mistake by lying to protect Rowan? But what choice did I have when he looked so terrified?
My phone rang again, startling me. Rhys's name flashed on the screen. He was calling back already? Wasn't he driving?
I swallowed hard and answered. "Hello?"
"Where are you now?" His voice was ice cold, devoid of any of the warmth I'd come to expect when he spoke to me.
"I—I'm at the coffee shop," I lied again, digging myself deeper. "With a friend."
There was a dangerous pause on the other end. "A friend."
The way he said it made my skin crawl. Not a question—a statement dripping with disbelief.
"Yes," I replied, my voice small. "Just grabbing coffee before heading back to the dorm."
