The shrill sound of her phone pierced through Kimi's peaceful sleep, dragging her from the depths of unconsciousness. Her hand fumbled blindly across the nightstand until her fingers closed around the device. Through heavy eyelids, she squinted at the screen.
Rylie was calling.
Without fully opening her eyes, Kimi pressed the phone against her ear and answered with a groggy voice.
"Rylie."
"Where are you right now?" Rylie's voice crackled with urgency.
Confusion clouded Kimi's mind as she struggled to process the question. "Where am I? I'm home, obviously. In my bedroom, still in bed," she mumbled, her words slurred with sleep.
"What! Are you serious right now? Today is the championship game! It's almost ten in the morning, and the match is about to begin. How can you possibly still be sleeping?"
The words hit Kimi like a bucket of ice water. Her eyes snapped open, and she bolted upright in bed, her heart suddenly racing.
"Oh no! I completely forgot!"
