Chapter 9 - Why

Kaitlyn was in her car, her hands gripping the steering wheel, packed in the building's garage. Her mind was still in a frenzy, the events of this night flashing in her mind but this time her senses were in check as the tempting man was a couple of stories away.

For the first time in a long time, she felt stupid. Very stupid. How could she allow her desires to win like that? How could she allow herself to stay in such a situation? 'stupid' she thought to herself. He was her boss, he was her boss. The CEO and largest shareholder of Rollex's enterprise, her boss.

She just kissed her boss, she just moaned under his touch, and she was still very hungry for her boss. She let her head fall on the steering wheel, feeling completely overwhelmed. How could she allow herself to fall into such a compromising situation? What is the plan now?

"What's with the car?" She heard Kristy say, her voice pulling her away from her scattered thoughts as she came into the room.

"Company's." She sighed as she pulled off her coat.

"Lucky." The younger woman said as she munched on some chips. Kaitlyn's roommate was sitting on the sofa in her sweats, her very long hair tied up in a messy bun, legs crossed on the center table while her full attention was on the TV, well not her full attention anymore now that Kaitlyn was in the room.

"I made mashed potatoes and beef stew." Kristy said, her sights still on the tv, Kaitlyn nodded. The mention of food reminded her that she hadn't gotten anything to eat yet. She walked straight to the kitchen, thankful to Kristy, sighing knowing she probably wouldn't enjoy the food, but she had gotten used to Kristy's cooking already.

She placed her things on the counter and went to the stove. She heard her phone ring, distracting her from the food. She picked up her phone, it was Lennox.

She debated ignoring it but remembered she didn't plan on losing her job so soon. "Hello?" She said just as picked up, the phone to her ear.

"Did you get home safe?" She heard him say from the other side of the phone, his voice sounded more professional than earlier, thankfully because she wasn't sure how she would handle hearing him speak to her like he did almost an hour ago.

"Yes, I just did."

"Alright, have a good night Kaitlyn." He said before ending the call.

The days blurred when Kaitlyn finally found a system, a system around avoiding Lennox, her boss, who was at most times of the day, not more than 25 feet away from her, daily.

Each day passed by quickly. She was seldom in a room alone with him. When she was, she never looked at him, never directly. She delivered documents to him hastily, although accurately. Giving him his coffee without barely any words and no eye contact. She communicated with him through the intercom most of the time, and her sentences were always short and to the point. It was a completely 'professional' relationship. She almost didn't think of him and all the things she wanted him to do to her that night. She buried those thoughts as far down as she could, at least for most of the time so she could go through the day without losing her breath now and then.

Friday morning, Kaitlyn was head-deep in work, cross-checking and triple-checking over something that needed to be shown to the board.

"You look very busy." She heard someone say, she looked up and saw Einar, and for barely a second a scowl appeared on her face.

'Did he just walk in without knocking?' She thought to herself. "Good morning." She greeted forcing herself to smile.

"Your door was wide open, saw you rushing in from the front desk. You seem very, very busy." He pointed out, her office was now 20 times more swamped than it usually was, documents and statements scattered all over, she had a system though. She knew where everything was.

"Oh." She replied.

"Kaitlyn." She heard Lennox interrupt them from the intercom.

"Sir?" She said after smiling at Einar apologetically.

"Do I have a meeting?"

"No, not till Monday." She answered simply, her eyes falling back to her laptop as she spoke. She had figured if she was only just a bit attentive to her boss, his voice wasn't as tempting.

"Alright, I'll be going off for lunch, can you get the work on my desk by 3?"

"Of course." She replied shortly then the phone died.

"Well, there goes my invitation." Einar chuckled.

Kaitlyn looked up at him from where she sat, pausing and waiting for an explanation as she quirked up an eyebrow.

"I was just wondering if you'd like to have lunch together." He asked shyly, fidgeting with his pale hands.

"Oh. Well, we could do that, if you don't mind having lunch here?" She proposed, trying to compensate for how rudely she probably talked to him when he first walked in.

"Oh, do you like Armenian? There's this very good place down the street that sells the best Armenian food."

"Sure, that sounds okay." She said with as warm a smile as she could muster.

"Okay, I'll be right back then." Before Einar got back with the food, Kaitlyn was already almost done with the work she had due by 3.

So their lunch wasn't just her face to her laptop, they had casual conversation. Talking about things like the City, the awful Seattle weather, and how extremely hard it was to find a job.

"It doesn't make sense, you're far too qualified. Hell, you can have my job if we're being honest." Einar said as he took a sip of his iced tea, she chuckled, he worked in IT, and she could not take his job if she wanted.

He was now done with his food, she was still munching but almost done, she was happy she let him pick what to eat.

"I debated leaving the city many times, maybe going to DC or moving to the UK. It was very frustrating." She said before stuffing her mouth with food.

"Honestly, I'd say you should after this. Try DC." He said just as he wiped his already clean hands with some Soviets. Kaitlyn nodded, the conversation making her think of just how long she was planning to keep this job.

Her current job overpaid her, paying her far more than what some other jobs would have paid for her qualifications, yet this wasn't going to be her plan, was it?. '6 months,' She thought to herself.

Her current job paid well enough for her to relocate comfortably, so 6 months had to be her limit. "DC sounds great." she finally admitted out loud, more to herself but Einar heard loud and clear.

"This Armenian food is great. Thank you." She finally said putting her plastic plate aside and taking a sip of her drink.

"You can always trust me for food choices." Einar bragged just as he got up and started to clear the plates.

"I'll remember that." Kaitlyn chuckled, feeling relaxed and well-satisfied. Einar was a very decent guy, the kind of man her mother would classify as a good choice.

Yes, he was incredibly good-looking, but so far he seemed pretty decent. He also had manners, which was more than she could say for other people. Not to mention, He wasn't ogling her, at least not blatantly.

"Maybe we can grab dinner sometime?" His voice sounded unsure making Kaitlyn smile.

"Kaitlyn." She heard her name just as she was about to reply. She shot Einar an apologetic look.

"Sir?" She answered.

Einar shuffled in one spot, looking anywhere but her, yet his eyes still fell on the younger woman.

"Come in here." Lennox said, his voice sounding strained like he was holding back.

"Of course." Kaitlyn answered.

Einar nodded with an understanding look before letting himself out,

Kaitlyn walked over to her and her boss's shared door, knocking softly before letting herself in.

"You wanted to see me?"

"Did you just have lunch", he asked, his eyes looking hard as if he had just been pissed off, they scrutinized her.

"Yes?" She answered confused, this was the most unprofessional question he had asked in days. So far they had been in perfect professional harmony. Now he was asking if she just had lunch in a tone that insinuated she did something wrong.

"Why?" He asked as if irritated.

"Because it was time for lunch? I'm sorry, is there a problem?

I'll have the work on your table before 3, I'm almost done." She said.

He leaned back in his chair, his gaze lingering on her for a moment. His expressions, more unreadable than ever, Kaitlyn tried not to look at him, yet that proved very hard while she was

standing there and he looked at her that way.

Kaitlyn shifted her weight on her heels, feeling unsettled by his intense gaze. "Is everything alright, Mr. Lennox."

"Take the rest of the day off, I have other things to address." Lennox said...
