A confused noise escaped from my lips as I stared at my phone screen for a moment before tapping the green button to answer.
“Hello? Mom?” I asked in confusion.
“Noa.” Even though I had gone a long time without hearing her voice, I instantly recognized my mother’s tone.
“What’s the occasion?” I murmured. “It’s been a while since you called.”
“Are you busy this weekend?” The question came without hesitation or explanation, causing my brow to furrow.
“Why? Is something wrong?” I asked, worry beginning to creep into my tone.
“No… I just need some help at the shop tomorrow. I’ve been minding it all week, and I’m exhausted.” She paused for a moment before continuing expectantly, “You’re free, right?”
My lips pursed in concealed displeasure as I wondered why we went through this song and dance every time. She never called for any other reason, after all.
“Noa?” she prodded.
