Chapter 39 - forgotten memories

Chapter Thirty-Nine: "Sleep on My Lap… Just Like When You Were Little"

The room was still.

Still to the point of suffocation.

The last rays of sunlight crept shyly through the window,

brushing the dust that floated in the faint air,

as if bidding farewell… to the room, or to her.

She lay on the bed,

her body frail, withered,

and her face…

Still the most beautiful face he had ever seen, despite all the exhaustion.

"Mom…"

The black-haired boy whispered, his voice broken.

He sat on the edge of the bed, then leaned in…

He held her, as if his small arms could protect her from death.

Her eyes were closed,

but when she heard his voice… she opened them with difficulty.

"My child…"

She said it while smiling, despite the pain…

A mother's smile, one that holds the whole world in a single glance.

"I'm here… don't cry…"

She whispered, raising her trembling hand to wipe his tears.

"But I'm… scared…"

He said, tears flowing down endlessly.

"I don't want you to go away from me… I don't want to be alone in this world…"

She smiled again, then coughed, blood coming out of her mouth, but he quickly wiped it:

"No… don't tire yourself, just… rest…"

She gently shook her head, placed her hand on his head, and said in a weak voice:

"Do you remember… when you were little?

You used to sleep on my lap and cry because you were afraid of the dark…

And I told you: As long as I'm here, you'll never be afraid."

He shook his head violently, holding her tighter:

"I'm still scared… I still… please don't go…"

She whispered:

"Now… I'm the one afraid of the dark.

But your embrace is warm… I'm at peace."

Then, in a voice barely audible:

"Promise me… you'll eat well… wash your face in the morning… and smile, even if I'm not there…"

"Mom, I don't want to promise… I want you… just you…"

She fell silent for a moment.

Then she whispered:

"If you miss me… just look up at the sky.

I'll be there…

Waiting for you to grow… to become strong… to make me proud…"

Then she breathed slowly…

So slowly… it was almost a farewell.

"Mom…?"

"Mom!!!"

But she… had fallen asleep forever.

Her eyes half-open, a peaceful smile on her lips.

As if she had finally slept… without pain.

The boy didn't scream.

He didn't move.

He just… held her tightly to his chest, and cried silently:

"Don't leave me… don't leave me alone…"

"Mommy…."

"Mom!!!" I screamed in a panicked voice.

When I touched my cheek, I found tears pouring down heavily, but I didn't know why I was crying.

I didn't even remember who the woman in the dream was, but there was one thing I knew — the boy in the dream loved that woman dearly.

From the voice of the boy in the image, I could tell she was his real mother…

But what do I have to do with those memories?

As soon as I separated from Sylvia yesterday, I headed to bed,

but I never expected to dream about the memories trapped in this body.

"Ugh…" I grabbed my head in frustration.

Those blurry memories were clouding my mind. I couldn't remember anything clearly.

"Calm down… I shouldn't get swept away by emotions that aren't even mine."

I began wiping my face from the tears.

I will never lose myself — especially after everything I've done.

I need to stay in control.

I got out of bed and headed to the bathroom quickly before washing my face.

When I looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn't help but laugh.

Why does this face keep surprising me?

I wiped the tears from my eyes, but due to all the crying, my eyes were red.

Then I headed toward the wardrobe.

I searched for clothes but didn't find anything.

I looked around the room the academy provided us.

Though it was simple… it was still very suitable for living.

I remembered that I had washed the clothes and hung them to dry,

but I forgot about them because of everything that happened yesterday.

"Haaah…" I sighed heavily, then headed toward the attic to grab my clothes,

but when I saw them all crumpled on the ground after falling from the line,

a wave of anger washed over me.

"Are they even bothering me on the level of laundry now?!"

I said with frustration as I grabbed the clothes and began dressing.

Even though I could iron them, I didn't have time for that now.

I need to prepare for what's coming —

which means I need to grow stronger.

"All right, let's start a new day," I said in a cheerful voice.

"Eh…?" I uttered, shocked.

As soon as I stepped outside — I saw a familiar face.

"Sylvia…" I said nervously.

Sylvia looked at me, then clenched her fists tightly.

"Kim… please… can you listen to me?"

She said in a sad voice.

Even though I wanted to comfort her in that moment,

I held myself back.

No… this is for the sake of our future.

The more Sylvia suffers now… the deeper her love will become later.

Instead of being a piece she can toss aside,

I'll become a piece she'd sacrifice her soul for.

"I already told you my wish yesterday…

So please, Sylvia… stay away from me."

I said coldly, mixing my voice with hatred,

before heading toward the exit.

> [Host… you've gone too far this time.]

> [Remember… you're not dealing with game characters. You're dealing with real humans.]

> [Also… what makes you so sure she won't do something drastic?]

When I heard the system's voice, I sensed some truth in his words…

But I didn't let go of my decision.

And I don't believe that someone with such high pride like Sylvia…

You will never do anything crazy.

"Kim…" she muttered in a low voice,

before lowering her hand.

---

Sylvia no longer knew what to do.

She had apologized to him —

but everything came too late.

The boy she realized she loved… now hated her.

She couldn't help but clench her fists in frustration.

All of it was Helen's fault.

If she hadn't mentioned his name that day,

his feelings would've been so much different now.

But when she remembered the red eyes and the disheveled clothes…

she couldn't help but feel the sting of guilt.

Could it be… that he spent the whole night crying?

The mere thought pierced her heart like a knife.

Even though she talked endlessly about her sorrow…

about losing her family, about betrayal…

She caused pain to someone else —

not just anyone, but the person who truly loved her.

Honestly… she was exhausted.

She couldn't take it anymore.

Her possessiveness began to grow unnaturally…

until her eyes turned into the shape of hearts.

If she couldn't make him love her…

then she would force him to.

She wouldn't allow anyone else to come near him.

Kim was hers,

and she would take back what's hers at any cost —

whether it was Mary, or even the gods themselves.

She grabbed her black sword, its dangerous gleam shining under the light,

then headed toward the cla

ssroom.

if Kim known the feelings brewing inside her…

he would've never gotten involved with her in the first place.

As for the novel, I think I will make it completely free, and even if I close it, it will be after many chapters, so I hope for your encouragement.
