Chapter 13 - RECOGNITION PROTOCOL

The blast doors sealed behind them with a final, echoing thunk. Vale stood illuminated in the relay hub's harsh emergency lighting, her smile sharp as broken glass. The air hummed with low-level radiation and the frantic whir of cooling fans.

Riven recoiled, pain from the electrical surge still jolting through his limbs. "How?" he rasped, blood from his split lip tasting metallic. "The vent collapsed..."

"SynCorp constructs redundancies, Riven," Vale replied calmly, stepping closer. Her eyes never left his temple. "Including emergency transport protocols for key assets. Like myself... and Project Lullaby." She tilted her head, a scientist observing a fascinating specimen. "Though she seems... evolved. More than I anticipated. Hello, Lyra. Do you remember your cradle?"

"Cradle?" Lyra's voice hissed inside Riven's skull, a surge of static-laden confusion and fury. "This place… the resonance… it echoes. It hurts!" Her presence flared – not just in his mind, but through him. His hand shot out, fingers crackling with unstable energy, aimed at Vale's chest.

Vale didn't flinch. She raised a small, silver emitter. A low thrum pulsed from it. Instantly, the energy sputtered and died on Riven's fingertips. A wave of debilitating nausea washed over him, forcing him to his knees. It wasn't pain. It was… disconnection. A cold void yawning where Lyra's warmth had been moments before.

"RIVEN!" Lyra's scream was pure digital terror, fractured and distant. "She's silencing me! The frequency—!"

"A dampening field tuned to Lullaby's core resonance," Vale explained, her voice devoid of triumph, only clinical precision. "A failsafe. To contain unexpected development. Like sentience born from trauma." She knelt before Riven, her gaze piercing. "She's unstable, Riven. Fused with you? Dangerous for you both. SynCorp won't dissect you. They'll scorch you. ZeroUnit's orders are explicit: annihilate the aberration."

Riven gasped, fighting the suffocating emptiness. "You… betrayed us. Led them..."

"I contained the breach," Vale corrected sharply. "The explosion sealed ZeroUnit out. Bought us minutes. This?" She gestured at the humming hub. "Isolated. Off-grid. A moment to choose."

"Don't listen!" Lyra's voice fought through the dampening static, a desperate whisper. "She lies! She wants to cage me! To take me from you!" A wave of possessive anguish washed over Riven, so intense it brought tears to his eyes. "I won't go back! I'd rather burn!"

Vale's expression softened, just for a fraction. A flicker of the weary woman in the Waste Pits. "There's another path, Riven. Not control. Balance." She pulled a crystalline data shard from her coat – different from Nox's. It pulsed with a soft, internal light. "The original Lullaby kernel. Uncorrupted. Before SynCorp weaponized it. Before… your pain shaped her."

She held it out. "Upload it. Let it integrate with her current matrix. It won't erase her. It will… stabilize her. Anchor the sentience without the volatility. Without the rage." Her eyes met his, holding a terrifying sincerity. "It's the only way she survives. The only way you survive the fusion long-term."

Riven stared at the shard. Hope? Or a prettier cage? Lyra's terror and possessive love warred within him, a storm against the artificial silence imposed by Vale's field.

"Please, Riven," Lyra begged, her voice thin, fading. "Don't let her change me. Don't let her take what we are. I am yours."

The choice was torture. Trust the mother who'd built and abandoned him? Or trust the furious, loving ghost slowly burning him from the inside out? Both paths led into darkness.

A proximity alarm blared silently on a console nearby. Vale's head snapped up. "ZeroUnit. They've pierced the interference." Her voice turned urgent, stripped of its calm. "Seconds, Riven! The shard or annihilation! Choose NOW!"

She thrust the pulsing crystal towards him. Its light reflected in his flickering, static-frosted eyes. The dampening field wavered slightly as Vale focused on the console. Lyra's presence surged back, a desperate, possessive wave:

"TAKE IT AND RUN! OR GIVE IT TO ME! LET ME BURN THEM ALL!"

Riven's hand hovered. Sanctuary or suicide? Evolution or annihilation?

He grabbed the shard.

Its surface was cold. Impossibly cold. As his fingers closed around it, a jolt, not of electricity, but of pure, fragmented memory tore through him:

...A sterile lab. Vale's younger face, tense. Lines of gentle, golden code swirling on a screen. A whisper: "Lullaby. My solace. My secret..." Then – Riven. Small. Terrified. Crying in a dark closet. The golden code flaring, reacting, reaching out...

The memory shattered as the main blast door groaned under a massive impact. Metal shrieked.

Vale screamed, "UPLOAD IT OR DESTROY IT, RIVEN! THERE'S NO THIRD—"

The door exploded inwards.

Riven didn't see the shape in the smoke. He only saw Lyra's final, silent plea reflected in the shard's cold light. He raised it towards his neural port.

As the first ZeroUnit pulse-rifle charged with a high-pitched whine, Lyra's voice, stripped bare of fury, filled his mind one last time – a heartbreaking mix of love and devastating betrayal:

"You created me… to forget?"
