Chapter 141 - C66.2: Unexpected Interruption

James stood awkwardly watching the family interaction unfold in uncomfortable silence, unsure of what to do or say. He was caught between respecting Victoria's parents and supporting Victoria's wishes, all while being completely oblivious to the real reason behind her desperation to have the house to themselves.

Samantha walked closer to further inspect James, her maternal instincts overriding her daughter's obvious distress. A fond smile spread across her face as she studied the young man who had captured Victoria's attention so completely. Looking directly at James, she said warmly, "Aren't you going to introduce us, dear?"

Victoria immediately came to stand in front of James, seeming to block her mother's access to him like a protective barrier. Her voice was sharp with irritation as she snapped, "The only thing you need to be introduced to is the door. Why are you still here?"

But Samantha, armed with the patience that came from years of dealing with difficult children in her classroom and decades of managing Victoria's strong personality, simply sidestepped her daughter with practiced ease. She stood looking at James again, her expression lighting up with genuine interest and warmth.

"My name is Samantha, and you are James," she said with the confidence of someone who had already pieced together the puzzle. She gestured toward her husband with a graceful hand. "That is my husband Fabian. May we know who you are to our daughter?"

James scratched his head nervously, feeling the weight of the moment. Despite Victoria's obvious frustration, he knew the importance of making a good impression on her parents. He offered a polite smile. "Nice to meet you, both of you. Victoria and I are in a relationship."

"I suspected as much," Samantha said knowingly, her eyes dropping to their still joined hands with an amused twinkle.

Before Victoria could intervene further, Fabian approached James with the purposeful stride of a man on a mission. "I'm curious about something..." he began, carefully placing a hand on James's shoulder and leading him away from the group.

The movement broke their held hands, and James, feeling tense and unsure of the protocol in this situation, could only follow blindly. His mind raced with possibilities about what Victoria's father might want to discuss privately.

Victoria watched with gritted teeth as her carefully guarded evening companion was led away by her father. The sight of James being shepherded off for what was undoubtedly going to be some form of paternal interrogation made her blood pressure spike even higher.

Samantha observed her daughter's state with the keen eye of someone who had been reading Victoria's moods for over two decades. A knowing smile played at the corners of her mouth as she recognized the signs of romantic frustration mixed with territorial protectiveness.

Unable to bear watching her plans continue to unravel, Victoria looked at her mother with an expression that could have melted steel. Clearly not happy with the turn of events, she stormed off toward her bedroom, her heels clicking angrily against the hardwood floor. She wanted to be alone, to process her frustration away from the family circus that had taken over her living room.

Samantha, ever the patient mother, allowed her daughter exactly five minutes to cool down before following after her. She found Victoria's bedroom door left ajar, an unconscious invitation that spoke volumes about her daughter's emotional state.

Victoria sat at the edge of her bed, legs crossed, having changed into a comfortable wear. The quick wardrobe change suggested she had accepted that her evening plans were thoroughly derailed. It appeared she was awaiting her mother's presence, resigned to the conversation she knew was coming.

"So how did it happen?" Samantha asked gently as she entered the room. "And when were you planning to tell us?"

Victoria folded her arms across her chest defensively, her posture radiating stubborn defiance. She ignored the question entirely, instead choosing to vent her accumulated frustrations. "I begged both of you to leave, but it seems you are out to get me. It seems you don't like me. What did I do so wrong, huh?"

The words came out in a rush, tinged with the kind of hurt that only family could inflict. Despite being a powerful CEO who commanded respect from rooms full of executives, in this moment Victoria sounded like the petulant child she had once been.

Samantha just listened with the careful patience. She had learned long ago that Victoria's outbursts were often masks for deeper emotions, and the best approach was to let her daughter exhaust herself before trying to reach the heart of the matter.

Victoria felt deeply wronged, her voice rising and falling with the intensity of her emotions. But gradually, as her mother's silent presence worked its familiar magic, she began to calm down. The fight slowly drained out of her posture, replaced by a reluctant acceptance of her mother's genuine concern.

Finally, in a voice much quieter than before, Victoria confessed, "We've been dating for two months, since June."

Samantha wanted to know more; she had dozens of questions about what changed her mind, was James really into her or was he just there to take advantage, did she see a future with him? But she recognized that Victoria was still in a fragile emotional state. She settled for asking the most important question, her voice gentle and non-judgmental: "Are you happy?"

The question seemed to catch Victoria off guard. Her defensive posture softened, and unconsciously, a fond smile spread across her face. She nodded, the gesture accompanied by a simple but heartfelt "Yes."

Samantha saw the look in her daughter's eyes, a softness and contentment she had never witnessed before and truly believed her. This wasn't the calculated satisfaction Victoria got from closing a business deal or the superficial pleasure of material success. This was something deeper, more genuine.

She reached out and held Victoria's hands, her voice warm with maternal love. "Cherish these moments, and cherish James."

With that simple blessing, she bade her daughter goodnight and left the room, closing the door gently behind her.

As she walked back downstairs, Samantha reflected on what she had just witnessed. She had never seen such a look in her daughter's eyes before, and it filled her with a quiet happiness. Victoria had always been driven, successful, and independent to a fault, but there had always been something missing…a softness, a vulnerability that came from truly caring for someone else. She was genuinely happy that her daughter had finally found someone who could fill that space in her life she had not even realized was empty.

When she reached the bottom of the stairs, she found her husband waving James goodnight at the front door. The young man bowed politely, his respectful demeanor intact despite what had undoubtedly been an intense conversation with Fabian.

After James left, Fabian turned to give his wife a decisive thumbs up, his expression suggesting he was thoroughly satisfied with both their discussion and James's character.

Samantha felt a wave of relief wash over her. Her daughter had chosen right this time.
