POV - Kyas
"Kyas, where am I? Where's Papa?" she asked.
"You're in the hospital, Ember. Your Papa was hurting you really bad this time, and I had to stop him. He fell down, and didn't get back up." I said.
Her eyes got all big and round. "You… stopped him? You killed my Papa?" she said.
"No!" I said in shock. "I would never. He fell down and hit his head."
"You were in my house?" she said.
"Yes, he was hurting you, really bad." I said.
"But, if you weren't in my house, he wouldn't have fallen down." she said.
This… was not going well.
"Ember, it was an accident. He didn't mean to fall down. He was trying to stop me from bringing you to the hospital." I said.
"You took me, Kyas? He was trying to save me from you?" she asked.
How does this keep sounding worse?
"Ember, he was hurting you badly. I stopped him, and had to get you to the hospital so you didn't die. He tripped and fell down because he didn't want me to help you." I said, hoping to get her to understand.
"But… he always stops before it gets too bad. You didn't have to be there. You should have left us alone. Now he's dead and it's Your fault!" she yelled.
She started crying. I was shocked. She's blaming me?
"He wasn't going to stop this time, Ember. I had to stop him, but I didn't hurt him." I said.
"No, you didn't! We would be fine if you had stayed away! Get OUT!" She shouted.
I stood quickly, unsure what to do.
"Ember, I didn't kill him, I literally can't kill people. It was an accident because he was drunk." I tried one last time.
"No! It was an accident because you were there! You were trying to take me, that's what you said. He wanted to save me from you, so it's all your fault! You killed my Papa! Get out! Get away from me!" she screamed.
Nurses came running because of the screaming. It was a nightmare. It had to be.
"Ember, please…? Just listen?" I tried.
"I hate you, Kyas, get out! You killed him! He's dead because of you!" she continued screaming.
Dr. Young put his hand on my shoulder. "Kyas, you should go. Let her calm down. She'll see things differently when she's had time to work it through. She's just reacting right now. She needs to calm down though, it's not good for her to be upset." he said.
I had no choice but to leave. My heart bond started to sting, so I focused on it. I watched as the magenta rose slowly changed to a deep fiery red, and burned like fire too. I looked back at her and met her eyes again. She really did feel hate for me. I backed up, out of her room, and ran.
I ran to the packhouse, up the stairs to my room, closed the door hard and backed away from it, like it could shut out that look in her eyes, the fire of the bond. I backed all the way to the window, and then the tears started. I kept staring at my door, but not seeing it.
A door closed in the hall, and mine opened. Mama stood there. "Kyas?" I tried to answer, but a cry came out instead. She crossed the room and pulled me into a hug.
"She hates me, Mama!" I said to her shoulder. "My mate, Ember, she hates me..."
"Shhh, shhh, " Mama said. "It won't be long, Kyas, she'll change her mind. "
My knees gave out and she came with me to the floor. I threw my arms around her and hugged her back, a lifeline in the storm. She rocked me in her arms as I struggled to understand how it all went so wrong so fast.
I started to feel the pull of the shift and had to get up and go into the bathroom to strip, and then shifted to Chaos. He went back out to the room and found Mama, snuggling his head against her. She wrapped her arms around him, comforting him too.
