Chapter 42 - Chapter 41:- Splitting Up

The oppressive heat of the Sandora River delta clung to the Going Merry as the two groups finalized their preparations. The air crackled with a tense energy, the weight of Alabasta's fate settling on their shoulders.

Luffy, vibrating with barely contained energy, was the first over the rail, landing with a soft thud on the sun-baked sandbank.

"SHISHISHI! LET'S GO! CROCODILE'S IN RAINBASE, RIGHT TAKUYA?! THE CASINO TOWN!" His declaration was loud and confident, cutting through the desert silence.

He pointed dramatically westward, towards the distant haze shimmering over the desert – the direction of Rain Dinners, Crocodile's stronghold.

Zoro landed beside him with a grunt, adjusting his haramaki and scanning the dunes with a warrior's eye. "Rainbase it is. Straight shot west, according to the map Nami yelled about before locking herself in with the drug dealer turned strategist."

He shot a sideways glance at Sanji, who was lowering himself more deliberately from the ship. "Try not to get lost before we find the Warlord, Cook."

Sanji ignored the jab, his face set in a grim mask. He took a long drag from his cigarette, the ember glowing fiercely in the bright light.

The humiliation still burned, but it was buried deep now, fuel for the fight ahead. "Just lead the way, Marimo. And try not to trip over your own feet." He turned back towards the ship, his eyes briefly meeting Nami's as she leaned over the railing. "Nami-san. Vivi-san. Be careful."

The words were clipped, professional, devoid of his usual flourishes, but the underlying concern was genuine.

Usopp landed with considerably less grace, tumbling into the sand. "Ack! Hot! HOT! Okay, okay, Brute Squad assembled! Remember, strength in numbers! And bravery! Mostly... numbers!" He scrambled up, clutching his slingshot like a lifeline.

Chopper, in Heavy Point, landed solidly beside Usopp. "We'll stop Crocodile! For Alabasta! For you Vivi!" His voice was filled with determined courage.

"MEAT FIRST!" Luffy yelled, already bounding towards the line of sparse desert vegetation marking the start of the path inland. "I saw a big lizard earlier! LUNCH!"

"LUFFY, WAIT!" Usopp and Chopper chorused, scrambling after their captain.

Zoro sighed, muttering "Idiot," before following at a swift pace. Sanji cast one last, unreadable look at the Merry, took another drag, and then broke into a run, easily catching up to Zoro.

Their figures quickly shrank against the vast expanse of golden sand, heading west towards the den of the desert crocodile.

On deck, the atmosphere was focused and urgent. Nami had a larger map spread on a crate, weighted down by Mira's spare tools. Vivi pointed at a winding route through the desert.

"...this ancient caravan trail," Vivi explained, her finger tracing a faint line. "It cuts through the Rock Palisades, bypassing the main Erg of Souls entirely. Fewer sandstorms, less chance of Baroque Works patrols. It's longer but potentially faster if we push hard."

Takuya nodded, leaning over the map. "Agreed. The palisades offer some cover. I can get us there as quickly as possible" He tapped a small device on his wrist.

Nami slammed her Clima-Tact shut with finality, her gaze sharp as flint as it swept over the group. "Right. Vivi, you know the landmarks. Takuya, keep us updated on any moves Baroque Works may make."

Her eyes then locked onto Mira, who was practically vibrating with cheerful energy. The navigator's voice turned hard, edged with the strain of impending disaster. "Mira. You're on rear guard and environmental scans – sandstorms, quicksand, anything that moves.

But listen carefully: Keep your antics to yourself. Do not get in our way. No unnecessary chatter, no skipping, no 'teehees'. You are a sensor suite right now, not a cheerleader. Understood?"

Mira blinked, her perpetual smile faltering slightly under Nami's intense glare. "But Master Takuya's brilliance always deserves—"

"Understood?" Nami cut her off, the word cracking like a whip.

Mira deflated, shoulders slumping. "Y-Yes, Nami. Understood. Sensor suite mode activated. Antics... minimized." She sounded genuinely chastised, her usual exuberance dampened.

Nami immediately turned her demanding gaze to Takuya. She didn't have time for Mira's quirks; lives hung in the balance. "Takuya. She listens to you. Rein her in. Make sure she actually does what she's told and stays focused. We can't afford distractions, not now."

Takuya met Nami's eyes, his expression unreadable but accepting the unspoken command which was directed towards Mira and not him. He turned his calm, assessing gaze fully onto Mira. His voice, when he spoke, was low, devoid of its usual dry humor, carrying the weight of absolute authority he held over her.

"Mira." The single word made her snap to attention, her back ramrod straight. "Nami's orders are necessary. You will obey. Completely. You will keep in line. No deviations, no commentary unrelated to threats or terrain. Perform your scanning duties flawlessly."

He paused, letting the instruction sink in, his eyes holding hers. Then he delivered the leverage, his tone chillingly matter-of-fact: "Do this, and do it well throughout this mission... and I will consider your current punishment status cancelled upon our success in Alubarna. Fail, deviate, or become a hindrance... and the restrictions triple. Indefinitely. Meaning you won't get a single cookie at all. Understood?"

Mira's eyes widened slightly. The mention of her "punishment status" and the threat of indefinite tripling struck a visible chord. Any lingering hint of rebellion vanished, replaced by pure, focused determination. "Understood, Master Takuya!" she declared, her voice crisp, military-precise.

"Antics suppressed. Focus absolute. Sensor suite fully operational. Objective: Flawless performance for punishment cancellation. I'll do anything for the cookies master." She immediately saluted and began scanning the horizon with intense concentration, her usual playful energy replaced by cold efficiency like a robot devoid of any emotions.

Nami watched the exchange, a flicker of grim satisfaction crossing her face. It was harsh, but necessary. She gave Takuya a curt nod of approval – Takuya knew the plot and knew with his current powers he can solo the alabasta arc

But he knew that doesn't mean he can slack off, given this was the plot's first major antagonist, plus the waifus he was gonna get here.

Although the start wasn't that great, he needs to get her to blindly trust him. Well he could have simply changed her mind using the overhaul ability, but he didn't want to resort to that unless needed.

She looked up, her gaze sweeping the now deadly serious group. "Good. We head north-east. Straight for Alubarna. No detours. No mistakes. Move out." Takuya simply nodded, adjusting his pack. "Let's move."

They worked swiftly, gathering water skins, lightweight rations, and desert cloaks. The efficiency was stark compared to the Brute Squad's chaotic departure. Within minutes, they were lowering a small rowboat into the calm channel water.

High atop a towering sandstone pillar, half a kilometer away and perfectly camouflaged against the striated rock, a figure observed the scene through a small, elegant spyglass.

Nico Robin lowered the glass, a thoughtful expression on her calm face. The desert wind tugged gently at her dark hair.

'Splitting their forces,' she mused silently. 'Predictable, yet... intriguing. The Straw Hat and his fighters charge headlong towards Sir Crocodile's trap in Rainbase. Brave, but ultimately futile against his power.'

Her gaze shifted, focusing intently on the smaller group preparing the rowboat below. 'But this group... the Princess, the Navigator, the unknown girl... and him. The supposed strategist. Takuya was it.'

A flicker of genuine interest crossed her features. 'He moves with purpose. They bypass the obvious confrontation, aiming straight for the heart of the conflict in Alubarna. To stop the war before it consumes the kingdom. A direct challenge to Sir Crocodile's script.'

She watched as Takuya helped Vivi into the boat with a steadying hand, then offered the same to Nami. There was no flourish, no lingering touch, just efficient assistance. Mira practically skipped into the boat, scanning the horizon.

'He is the variable,' Robin decided, a small, enigmatic smile touching her lips. 'Sir Crocodile underestimates the chaos these pirates bring.

He focuses on the hammer blow of Straw hat Luffy. But it is the scalpel wielded by this group, guided by that man's mind, that could truly unravel his plans. Stopping the war... that would deny him the chaos he needs to seize Pluton.'

She watched the rowboat push off from the Merry, Takuya handled the oars while Nami checked the map, and Vivi consulted a compass and looking at the route with caution ensuring to use the knowledge of terrain to get to Alubarna as quickly as possible without being noticed and Mira watched their flank.

They began rowing steadily towards the opposite shore, aiming for the mouth of the northern canyon that led towards the Rock Palisades route.

'Following the Brute Squad would yield predictable carnage,' Robin thought, dismissing the westward path Luffy's group had taken. 'But the Strategy Group... they move towards the true fulcrum. Towards the tomb... and towards the potential for far more interesting revelations.'

Her course was set. She would shadow the Strategy Group. The Princess, the Navigator, the strange girl, and the enigma named Takuya held the key to the next act of Alabasta's tragedy – or perhaps, its salvation. And Nico Robin needed to see how this particular variable would play out.

A subtle ripple passed over Robin's calm features. She raised a hand, fingers lightly brushing her temple as if dispelling a thought.

On the distant deck of the Going Merry, unseen by the departing groups, several small ears – delicate blossoms formed by her Hana Hana no Mi power – detached from the woodwork near the helm and the cabin door where they had listened unseen.

They dissolved into flurries of petals that vanished instantly on the desert breeze. Her surveillance was recalled; the ship held no more secrets for now.

Simultaneously, she pressed a tiny, discreet Den Den Mushi transmitter concealed within her sleeve. Her voice, cool and commanding, was barely a whisper into the receiver. "Miss All Sunday to Agents. Primary targets diverting.

Straw Hat Luffy and his combatants are en route west, towards Rainbase. Intercept and delay. Ensure they engage Sir Crocodile as planned.

The secondary group – Princess Vivi, Navigator Nami, unknown female, and the strategist 'Takuya' – are proceeding northeast via the Rock Palisades route towards Alubarna.

Monitor communications but do not engage them directly yet. I will handle their observations personally. Maintain position updates."

She severed the connection, her enigmatic smile returning, sharper now. Her eyes remained fixed on the tiny rowboat navigating the turquoise channel below. 'Let Sir Crocodile have his predictable duel with the reckless Straw Hat. The real intrigue lies here.'

'Takuya,' she mused, the name carrying a weight of curiosity. 'He positions himself at the heart of the counter-play. Can this self-styled strategist truly navigate the political minefield of Alubarna?

Can he halt the avalanche of rebellion Cobra's folly and Sir Crocodile's machinations have set in motion? Or is he merely another pawn, overestimating his grasp on the desert's shifting sands?'

The desire to see it firsthand, to unravel the puzzle he presented, was compelling. She needed to witness his methods, gauge his true influence, and understand the nature of the 'scalpel' he wielded. Could he actually stop the war?

With the fluid grace of a desert shadow, Robin detached herself from the high vantage point. Instead of petals, she moved with silent, practiced stealth, beginning a swift descent down the rocky canyon face towards the riverbank, her path chosen to parallel the rowboat's course unseen.

She would follow them, just like a phantom observer, to Alubarna. The fate of the kingdom, and the truth about this intriguing variable named Takuya, would unfold before her eyes.
