Chapter 119: If You Don't Let Me Down, I Will Not Let You Down
In the valley of the Magical Beast Mountains.
The thatched cottage was filled with faint smoke. On a bed within the haze, a woman in white lay with her eyes closed. Her usually rosy face was now strangely tinged with vibrant, multicolored hues.
She appeared lifeless, her breathing imperceptible, clutching a small bag of black powder. Traces of the powder lingered on her red lips, painting a scene that could easily be mistaken for suicide by poison.
After a moment, the colorful hues on her cheeks gradually faded. Xiao Yixian, the Little Medical Fairy, slowly opened her eyes. A fleeting confusion passed through them before they sharpened with clarity.
"Was the dose too high?" she murmured, raising the bag to inspect the remaining powder. This was the first time she'd taken poison and lost consciousness.
Since Xiao Bai had assured her he didn't mind her Calamity Poison Body, believed his claim of a solution, and expressed his desire to help, Xiao Yixian had let go of her restraints. No longer carefully controlling her intake, she consumed whatever poisons her body could handle.
She hadn't expected the newly concocted second-grade poison to overwhelm her, causing her to faint.
"Next time, I need to be more careful. Xiao Bai isn't here. If something goes wrong, with his temper, he'll never let me stay here alone!" Xiao Yixian tapped her head, muttering softly.
"It's good that you know!" A voice echoed from a distance.
"Xiao Bai!" Xiao Yixian exclaimed in delight. She started to rush out but paused, suddenly remembering something. She quickly grabbed a handkerchief and meticulously wiped her lips.
"No need to wipe! I saw everything!" A figure pushed open the door, grinning.
"You're back!" Fearing his reproach, Xiao Yixian flashed a radiant smile on her gentle face and ran to him.
"Silly girl, you're so sure I found a solution that you dare eat poison until you faint? This is the Magical Beast Mountains—aren't you afraid a beast might barge in? How dangerous!" Xiao Bai touched her delicate head, chiding her gently.
"I'm not afraid! Xiao Lan's keeping watch nearby!" Xiao Yixian tilted her head, her eyes curving into crescents as she looked at him.
Xiao Bai was speechless. What use was a first-rank magical beast eagle?
"Maybe I should find a stronger beast in the mountains to tame and station in the valley," he mused, stroking his chin.
"Xiao Bai, what're you thinking about?" Xiao Yixian's slender fingers poked his chest.
"Nothing. By the way, guess what this is?" Xiao Bai pulled a gray scroll from his storage ring and waved it at her.
"Is this… could it be…" Xiao Yixian's eyes sparkled with excitement, her voice trembling as she stared at the scroll.
"Take a look!" Xiao Bai handed it to her with a smile.
With trembling hands, Xiao Yixian carefully took the scroll and unrolled it.
As her eyes scanned the text, the excitement in them gradually dimmed.
Noticing her fading expression, Xiao Bai's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Looks tough, huh?"
"Yeah," Xiao Yixian nodded absently, lost in disappointment.
"Don't worry. I've got leads on the items listed. I wouldn't have brought this method to you otherwise!" Xiao Bai said confidently, aiming to bolster her spirits and prevent despair from taking hold.
"Really?" Her eyes lit up, gazing at him with hope.
"When have I ever lied to you?" Xiao Bai nodded.
Xiao Yixian rolled her eyes. "Someone lied to me the first time we met, big liar!"
"Haha." Xiao Bai scratched his head, sheepish.
"Hmph!" Xiao Yixian snorted, but warmth flooded her heart as she recalled their first meeting. She stretched out her arms, hugging him and resting her head on his chest. "Xiao Bai, why are you so good to me?" she whispered.
"I don't know. Maybe it's fate," Xiao Bai murmured, wrapping his arms around her slender waist.
"Fate…" Xiao Yixian paused, closing her eyes and inhaling his familiar, comforting scent. She whispered, "In this life, if you don't let me down, I will never let you down."
Xiao Bai froze, touched by her words. Tenderness flickered in his eyes as he leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Xian'er, I want to test the poison myself."
Confused, Xiao Yixian blinked. Test the poison? What poison? Did Xiao Bai want to take it too?
Then she felt his hands shift on her waist, and realization dawned. Her face flushed crimson, and she huffed in embarrassment, "Pervert!"
She wriggled free, glaring at Xiao Bai, whose eyes danced with mirth. How had she missed this side of him before?
Testing the poison, he says! As if I'd call you out on it!
"Hey, Xian'er, what're you doing?" Xiao Bai feigned alarm.
"Heh, didn't you want to test poison? I'm granting your wish!" Xiao Yixian smirked, pulling the Eight-Winged Black Emperor Snake's poison from her ring and eyeing him playfully. "Don't worry, Xian'er will be gentle!"
"You're trying to murder your husband, you know!" Xiao Bai protested.
"Relax, it's not murder. I'll eat as much as you do—fair, right?" Xiao Yixian's eyes gleamed with mischief.
"…" Xiao Bai gave her a thumbs-up, conceding defeat. Who in their right mind would challenge a Calamity Poison Body at poison-eating? Was he tired of living?
"See how formidable I am? Let's see if you dare 'test poison' again!" Xiao Yixian crowed triumphantly, though a pang of sadness struck her. Her body was now saturated with toxins, requiring caution even in closeness, let alone anything more.
She knew Xiao Bai was teasing to ease her insecurities, but if her condition remained uncontrolled, how could she ever resolve this inner conflict?
Xiao Bai had given her hope today, but she lacked confidence in it. The requirements were daunting. Gathering three Heavenly Flames was a miracle in itself, not to mention fusing them. The other two materials—unheard of to her—were likely rare and elusive.
Despite her limited experience, she grasped the challenge. The scroll noted that several Calamity Poison Bodies had appeared on the continent, none successfully controlled. Would she be the exception?
"Impressive, impressive!" Xiao Bai wiped imaginary sweat from his brow, nodding vigorously.
Xiao Yixian watched his theatrics, feeling both amused and touched. She stepped forward, her hands gently cupping his handsome face.
Her eyes shimmered with affection as she said softly, "Xiao Bai, if Xian'er is fortunate in this life, one day, all that's meant to be yours will be yours."
