Chapter 23 - Nowhere To Run

Adam leaned back in his chair, one arm draped casually over the backrest, pretending not to notice the way Sofia kept stealing glances at the takeout bag like it had offended her entire lineage. But when she finally gave in, muttering something under her breath and picking at the food with reluctant grace, he couldn't take his eyes off her.

He told himself he was only watching her because he had to. That this was all part of the plan—the merger, the timeline, the agreement they were both meant to sign. Nothing personal. Nothing more.

But it didn't feel that way.

There was something about the way she chewed slowly, clearly trying not to enjoy the ridiculously overpriced meal he'd brought, or how she pretended she wasn't hungry even as she polished off half the risotto. He found himself amused. Genuinely amused. And that unsettled him more than he liked.
