The sky above the Jagged Canyons did not simply darken; it vanished, replaced entirely by the descending, serpentine underbelly of the Gargantua Iron-Wyrm.
Kai had stood his ground against a Tier 8 Direwolf in the entrance exam. He had purged his marrow, balanced his Five-Element core, and reached Level 9. But as the Wyrm lowered its massive, armored head into the ravine, Kai realized the terrifying truth of the cultivation realms. A Tier 7 beast, equivalent to a Tier 2 human cultivator, was not just stronger or faster. It existed on a completely different plane of atmospheric density.
The Wyrm didn't even have to roar. The sheer, passive pressure of its condensed Qi Core radiated outward, creating a localized gravity field that slammed into Squad 7 like a physical wall.
Robert was forced to his knees, his Siphon-Staff clattering against the stone. Maya groaned, the Iron-Wood shield suddenly feeling as though it weighed a thousand pounds.
Kai gritted his teeth, his newly forged musculoskeletal system screaming in protest. The heavy Density-Stone Cuffs on his wrists were nothing compared to the crushing weight of a Tier 7 aura.
[System Alert: Extreme Qi Suppression!]
[Movement Speed reduced by 70%.]
[Warning: Lethal strike imminent.]
I can't move, Kai realized, his molten-gold eyes wide as the Wyrm's jaws, lined with stalactite-sized iron teeth, began to open. The engine is stalling.
"System!" Kai roared internally. "Allocate all five Free Attribute Points into Agility! Now!"
[Allocating 5 Points to Agility.]
[Agility: 21 -> 26]
[Nervous System Response Time enhanced.]
The upgrade hit him like a bolt of lightning. The suffocating pressure didn't vanish, but Kai's enhanced capillary network flared, forcing high-density Qi through his frozen limbs. He broke the paralysis, sliding his left foot back and raising the Quintessence Blade. He couldn't kill it, but he could die fighting.
"Don't swing that sword, Hart!" Yan screamed over the rising, unnatural wind.
Kai glanced back. Princess Zhao Yan was not drawing her rapier. Instead, she had plunged her hand into her spatial pouch and pulled out a flawlessly carved, glowing white jade token.
[Appraisal Active]
[Item: Imperial Void-Step Talisman (Tier 2)]
[Effect: Instantly transports up to five linked biological entities to a pre-set spatial anchor.]
"A Tier-2 Spatial Slip?" Robert gasped from the ground, recognizing the Void magic. "Princess, those are single-use consumables! That's at least five thousand credits burning in your hand!"
"It is pocket change compared to my life!" Yan commanded, biting her own thumb and smearing a drop of her blood across the jade. The talisman flared with a brilliant, blinding blue light, casting tendrils of spatial energy that wrapped around Kai, Robert, and Maya's waists.
"We're leaving," Yan said, her face pale, her violet aura flaring as she poured her Tier 1 (Mid) core into the artifact to jumpstart it. "But the Wyrm's aura is disrupting the spatial coordinates! I need six seconds to cut through the interference!"
Six seconds.
Above them, the Iron-Wyrm let out a localized, deafening roar. It wasn't a sound; it was a physical shockwave of compressed, metallic air. The Wyrm reared its head back, the iron scales along its throat glowing like the inside of a blast furnace. It was preparing a breath attack—a concentrated beam of superheated metal slag.
"Maya! Robert!" Kai shouted, stepping directly in front of the Princess. "Hold the line! Buy the time!"
"I've got the front!" Maya roared. She didn't have the agility to dodge, so she embraced her element. She slammed both heavily calloused hands onto the back of her cracked Iron-Wood shield. "Earth Node Maximum: Obsidian Bastion!"
She pulled every ounce of Earth Qi from the canyon floor, projecting a massive, three-layered kinetic wall of solid, brown energy.
"I'll eat what I can!" Robert yelled, his eyes rolling back until they were pools of pure black. He planted the Siphon-Staff into the dirt, ignoring the blood dripping from his nose. "Grade 1 Array: Devouring Maw!"
A swirling, localized black hole violently tore open in the air just inches in front of Maya's shield.
Three seconds.
The Wyrm unleashed its breath. A blinding, torrential beam of liquid, superheated iron and crushing kinetic force erupted from its jaws, washing over the depression like a localized sun.
The beam hit Robert's Void array first. The dark pocket of null-space shrieked, violently sucking in thousands of gallons of the molten iron, but the array overloaded and shattered like glass after exactly one and a half seconds, throwing Robert backward into the canyon wall.
The remaining beam slammed into Maya's Obsidian Bastion.
The first layer of her Earth Qi wall instantly vaporized. The second layer held for a fraction of a second before shattering. The molten slag hit the physical Iron-Wood shield. Maya screamed in agony as the wood instantly began to burn, the sheer kinetic weight driving her to her knees.
Five seconds.
Maya's shield gave way, splintering into ash. The residual splash of the superheated breath cascaded down toward Yan, who was completely defenseless.
Kai stepped into the gap.
"Sovereign's Breath: Water Node to Metal Node!" Kai roared internally. He flooded the azure and silver grooves of the Quintessence Blade, creating a localized, freezing resonance field along the flat of the heavy O-Katana.
He swung the sword upward, not to cut the beam, but to deflect the splash.
The molten iron hit the resonance field. The high-frequency vibration of Kai's blade acted like a physical deflector shield, violently scattering the superheated slag away from Yan. The extreme heat instantly singed Kai's hair and eyebrows, blistering the skin on his arms.
"Done!" Yan screamed.
Six seconds.
The jade talisman in Yan's hand shattered into a million sparkling dust motes. The Wyrm's jaws snapped shut on empty air.
CRACK!
A violent implosion of displaced air echoed across the Grand Courtyard of the Imperial Academy.
In the center of the courtyard, the spatial coordinates of the Academy's extraction point flared with erratic blue lightning. Squad 7 was violently ejected from the portal, hitting the polished stone floor in a tangled, chaotic heap.
Robert bounced twice, groaning as he clutched his smoking Siphon-Staff. Maya hit the ground hard, her Iron-Wood shield completely gone, her forearms covered in burns. Princess Zhao Yan landed on one knee, her lavish silk robes scorched at the edges.
Kai hit the stone feet-first, skidding backward. His Academy uniform was burned to tatters across his chest, exposing his dense, bronzed musculature. The Quintessence Blade in his hand was smoking, the metal hissing as it rapidly cooled.
The courtyard fell dead silent. A dozen other squads, safely returned from low-risk zones with baskets of cheap herbs, stared at the horrific, ozone-scented state of Squad 7.
Vice-Dean Kael slowly descended from the Faculty Balcony. He walked directly up to the battered squad, his data-stream spectacles reflecting the smoke rising from Kai's blade. He looked at Maya's burns, Kai's blistered arms, and the residual Void-dust on Yan's hands.
"A Tier-2 Spatial Slip," Kael noted, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You manually aborted the mission."
Yan stood up, attempting to brush the soot from her ruined robes. "We encountered a Gargantua Iron-Wyrm. A Tier 7 apex predator. But we achieved our objectives."
She reached into her spatial pouch and dumped the massive chunk of Cloud-Iron, the three Tier-8 Beast Cores, and the glowing Blood-Lotus flowers onto the courtyard stone.
The surrounding students gasped at the sheer value of the loot.
Kael did not gasp. He looked at the fortune at his feet, and then his gaze snapped up. The composed, banker-like facade vanished entirely.
"You did not achieve your objectives, Princess," Kael said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
Suddenly, the ambient wind in the courtyard stopped dead. The air didn't just grow heavy; it felt as though it had physically crystallized. Kael took a single step forward, and a fraction of his true aura bled out. It wasn't the chaotic, wild pressure of the Iron-Wyrm. It was an infinitely sharp, perfectly refined weight that pressed against their skulls like the edge of an invisible guillotine.
[System Alert: Overwhelming Suppression Detected!]
[Entity Classification: Martial Grandmaster]
[Warning: Target is multiple major realms above host. Vital signs fluctuating.]
Robert gagged, instantly forced flat onto his stomach against the stone. Maya let out a choked gasp, her burned arms trembling violently. Even Princess Yan, with all her noble pride, was driven back down to one knee, her face draining of color.
Kai gritted his teeth, his Level 9 stats screaming under the pressure. The Iron-Wyrm was a beast, but Kael... Kael was a Martial Grandmaster. In the hierarchy of the Empire, a Grandmaster was a walking natural disaster, sitting just below the legendary Half Martial Emperor realm occupied by Dean Azure himself, and only two steps removed from the god-like Martial Emperors.
"And you nearly got three high-potential initiates and a royal heir slaughtered on your very first day!" Kael's voice vibrated through their bones, his aura pinning them to the floor. "You chose a High-Risk Tier-8 zone out of sheer arrogance. You overestimated your squad's capacity, and when the reality of the Outer Fringe caught up with you, you relied on your wallet to save you from your own hubris."
Kael's eyes flashed behind his spectacles, a storm of pale-blue Wind Qi spiraling in his irises.
"The Exarch-Kin do not care how dense your bones are, or how heavy your shield is," Kael stated, the sheer weight of his Grandmaster aura driving the lesson home. "If you bite off more than you can chew, you die. A vanguard's duty is tactical survival, not glorious suicide."
Just as Kai felt his newly forged ribs begin to crack under the pressure, Kael snapped his fingers.
The aura vanished entirely. The air rushed back into the courtyard, and Squad 7 collectively gasped for breath, their clothes soaked in cold sweat.
Kael adjusted his spectacles, his expression returning to absolute, cold neutrality. He waved a hand, and an Academy servitor rushed forward to collect the loot.
"The Academy does not reward stupidity, even when it is lucrative," Kael announced smoothly. "No Merit Points will be awarded to Squad 7. Furthermore, activating a spatial slip creates a massive disruption in our local array. There is an extraction penalty."
"You're taking our credits?" Robert groaned from the floor, coughing violently.
"The Vault will purchase this contraband at standard scavenger rates, minus the extraction fee," Kael calculated coldly. "One thousand credits to each squad member. And to ensure this lesson in overestimating your abilities sticks..."
Kael looked at the heavy chunk of Cloud-Iron.
"Squad 7 is assigned to the Academy's lower Smelting Pits for the next three nights. You will process this very ore yourselves, by hand, without the use of Academy automatons. Dismissed."
As Kael turned and walked away, his Zephyr cloak billowing behind him, the rest of the courtyard erupted into whispers. Yan looked absolutely furious, her fists clenched at her sides. Maya sighed heavily, staring at her burned arms.
"Smelting Pits," Robert muttered, slowly pushing himself up. "Great. Sweating in a basement for three days."
Kai sheathed his blade. He looked down at his blistered arms, feeling the lingering phantom ache of the Grandmaster's aura. He pulled up his System interface.

[New Debuff: Minor Thermal Burns. Healing in progress.]
They had failed the official mission. They had been publicly dressed down, physically humbled by a Grandmaster, and given menial punishment duty.
But as Kai looked toward the Faculty Spire, a slow, metallic smirk spread across his face. Vice-Dean Kael had intended the Smelting Pits to be a grueling, humiliating punishment. He didn't realize he had just given an Apprentice Forgemaster three uninterrupted nights in a high-temperature forge with premium Cloud-Iron.
One thousand credits, and free access to the pits, Kai thought, rolling his heavy, bruised shoulders.
