Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

[Rosie's POV]

"Let's not talk about that..."

"Harry, your mom called, she wants us to meet for the family dinner and your dad, he wants to spend time with my boys" I petitioned as he dropped the spoon as his ragged breath deepened.

"There's nothing wrong with their request, they're just curious..."

"Then get someone Harry, I don't want you to stay single and not find love because you're taking care of me and my kids"

I never let him finish his words, I countered it because he can't be invested in me and not have a life on his own.

My kids and I can stand firm and I don't need him anymore.

He was quiet, his eyes danced in their sockets as there's silence between us until he said;

"I'm not complaining"

I slapped my forehead, pissed off by his response. Why do I keep bringing up such topics when his answers will always be the same.

"Harry..."

"No Rosie, you don't get to tell me what's good for me, just let me be there for you" he mutters, countering me.

I thinned my lips, knowing that I've lost and there's no words to tell him that he should quit.

It's another day to be reminded that hard work actually pays?

I gasped, staring at the invitation sent to me this early morning as a surprise gift.

I intended to jump on Harry, to scream in excitement but he has gone to drop the kids at school.

I woke up quite late today as it felt as though the hit from yesterday paralyzed me.

Walking downstairs to the dining area, I found a letter on the table with brunch served.

Harry feeds me so much that I can't complain. He didn't even wake me up like he does as he always understands.

What would I have done without him? However, he still needs a life outside this and maybe I'd fix him up with someone.

Taking the letter to read with drowsy eyes, I realized it's an invitation to become the chef for the conglomerate gathering of the year.

I giggled, excited as one of my biggest dreams was coming into fruition. Harry has made it come true.

My heart pounded, as I was nervous, trying to stay confident that I could do it.

If Harry linked me up with this ceremony, then he trusts me and my works.

Tears brewed up in my eyes as I bit my lips, steepled my fingers and raised my eyes to the ceiling.

"Thank you so much Harry"

I didn't have an appetite to eat but I forced myself just so I'd be ready for the event that will take place this evening.

Besides, I can't refuse Harry's meal, it heals my stomach.

After eating, I returned to my room, to start a menu consisting of different meals I intend to try.

The kitchen is definitely going to be traumatized by me because right now, I was running back there, to start my new recipes.

I don't have to worry about my restaurant, Harry has it handled and he's just a life saver.

I just hope not to screw up tonight. While bringing out ingredients from the store room, my phone rings from the corner which I had placed in the room.

Hastily, I ditched the ingredients in my hands to attend to the caller. It must be Harry checking up on me.

I was flustered, reaching out for my phone and reading the screen only to realize it's an unknown number.

Nevertheless, I answered it. Clearing my throat and maintaining a pose, I faked a smile.

"Hello?" I curiously responded darting my gaze to and fro the room while marching to the cupboard to take out some spices.

"Am I speaking with Ms Rosie, the owner of Camille restaurant?" A feminine voice muffled through the call and I nodded subconsciously about my environment.

"Are you less busy in the afternoon? We'd like to place an order for you to bake for someone, it won't really take much of your time"

"I...well, I'd try but I can't guarantee you"

"Please ma'am, it's very important and I promise to pay you handsomely for it, it's just that he has an allergy and after tasting your bakings, he wants more"

I rolled my eyes, quite startled that my work is getting the recognition it needs but then I have something more important.

"You can place the order through the restaurant call line..."

"Please ma'am, grant this one request for him, he'd die soon and I want this moment special for him"

I was silent, contemplating. It's not a hard deal, I'd just bake the cake and send someone to deliver it.

"Okay, I'd do it" I muttered with a sad smile as her sober voice only tells me how she cares for this person.

"Please can you be the one to deliver it?" She pressed on and I suddenly heard a grunt in the background, it was replaced by a crashing sound, like something is falling.

I shuddered as though I was right there and whatever was happening there didn't feel right.

However, I can tell she'd handle it but then, her request sounds so difficult to do.

I stared at the time on my screen, it's 1pm and I think I can still make it, if I'm swift.

"I...I... I'm quite busy but..."

"Please, I'd compensate you"

"Okay, as long as it does take my time" I agreed not arguing again as she has won me with that statement.

The call got terminated and I inhaled to grab my breath.

It's indeed going to be a busy day for me but it should be worth it anyway.

I abandoned the store, with some ingredients needed to bake something special for this stranger who has a short-life to live.

Whosoever he is, I wish him all the happiness in life before he dies.

That's why I'm calling this masterpiece of a cake, 'the last bite'
