Jason's mind snapped into focus the moment Clark's blood hit the floor. There was no time for shock, no space for hesitation. The creature was gone, the hall was chaos, and the Man of Steel was bleeding out on his wedding day.

He turned to Diana, voice sharp as a blade. "Protect everyone. You and the others."

Diana's eyes met his, fierce and immediate. She nodded once, already moving toward the panicked crowd, toward Lois who still held Clark's body, toward the heroes who were only now beginning to understand what had just happened.

Jason spun to Kara. "Let's go. Now. We need to take him to his fortress."

Kara stared at him, her face pale, her hands still wet with her cousin's blood. Her mouth opened, but only a broken sound came out. "Wha… uhg."

"KARA!" Jason's voice cut through her shock like a physical blow. "WAKE UP! Let's go! NOW!"

She blinked. Swallowed. Something hardened behind her eyes. "Yeah… yeah. Okay."

She moved. In one motion, she scooped Clark into her arms, careful, impossibly careful, her strength the only thing keeping him together as blood soaked through his torn suit and dripped onto the floor. Jason was already outside, his Ankh materializing beneath his feet, black and white magic carrying him into the sky.

Kara launched after him.

They flew at supersonic speeds, cutting through clouds, cutting through the cold air that rushed past them like water. The Arctic stretched below them, white and endless, the Fortress of Solitude hidden somewhere in its frozen heart. Kara's face was set, her jaw tight, but Jason could see the tremble in her hands, the way she held Clark just a little too carefully.

Usually, the trip would take seconds. But she couldn't fly full speed. Every vibration, every shift in momentum, every gust of wind risked tearing Clark's wound open further. So she held back. Held steady. Held her dying cousin in her arms and flew as fast as she dared

They were close. Jason could see the crystalline spires of the fortress rising from the ice, could see the entrance waiting for them, could feel the barest flicker of relief starting to form in his chest

The dark gate opened in the sky ahead of them.

Rogol Zaar emerged from the blackness like a nightmare given form, his massive axe already raised, his grin wide and hungry. He launched himself toward Kara, toward Clark, toward the killing blow that would end the bloodline of Krypton forever.

Jason didn't think. He moved.

He slammed into Rogol Zaar with the force of a meteor, their bodies tumbling through the air, smashing into the frozen ground below. Ice shattered around them in a violent explosion of white. The cold bit at Jason's skin, but he didn't feel it. All he felt was rage.

"YOU FUCKING BASTARD!"

His fist connected with Rogol's face again and again, each punch cracking the ice beneath them, each impact sending shockwaves across the frozen wasteland. Rogol's grin never faded. If anything, it grew wider.

"KARA, KEEP GOING!" Jason screamed.

She didn't hesitate. She flew past them, Clark clutched to her chest, toward the fortress that was finally within reach.

Jason rushed at Rogol again, but this time the creature was ready. His massive axe swung sideways, meeting Jason's fist in mid-air. The impact created a sonic boom that shattered the ice for a mile in every direction. The ground beneath them cracked and groaned, fissures spreading outward like spiderwebs.

Rogol Zaar laughed. "Ahhh… Why are you ruining my Kryptonian hunt?" He tilted his head, studying Jason with something that might have been curiosity. "Foolish man."

Jason didn't answer. He stepped back, raised his hand, and unleashed a Death Slash.

The invisible slash flew toward Rogol Zaar, carrying the absolute finality of endings, the promise of oblivion made manifest. It should have killed him. It would have killed anything that lived, anything that breathed, anything that existed.

Rogol Zaar smiled.

His axe came up, not blocking cutting. The blade of his weapon moved through the air and somehow, impossibly, bisected the Death Slash itself. The attack fell apart on either side of him, harmlessly carving trenches in the ice behind his shoulders.

"He did say I should worry about you." Rogol Zaar's grin widened, blood still dripping from his split lip, teeth still missing from where Jason had punched him. "Hahahah… you are a fun one."

He let himself fall backward, his body tilting into empty space. The dark gate opened beneath him, swallowing him before he hit the ground.

"FUCK." Jason stared at the spot where the creature had vanished, his chest heaving. "How?"

But there was no time to figure it out. Clark was dying. Kara was alone. And Rogol Zaar could reappear anywhere, anytime, with that axe that cut through Kryptonians like they were made of paper.

Jason flew.

The fortress rose before him, crystalline and cold, its doors already open. He shot through the entrance, following the sound of machines and the glow of red light.

Kara had placed Clark on a medical bed in the heart of the fortress. Robots bearing the Superman insignia moved around him with mechanical precision, attaching monitors, adjusting equipment, working in silent synchronization. Above Clark, massive emitters bathed him in the deep crimson glow of Red Sun radiation...the only thing that could suppress his healing factor enough for the machines to actually work on his wounds.

Jason landed beside Kara, his eyes scanning the room, the windows, the entrances. "That man may come again. Stay alert. Stay away from that Red Sun light."

Kara didn't respond.

She was shaking. Her hands trembled at her sides, her breath came in short, uneven gasps, her eyes were fixed on Clark's pale face. He looked small on that bed. Small and fragile and human in a way Jason had never seen him before.

Jason walked to her, placing himself between her and the window, forcing her to look at him.

"Kara. I need you to be alert. That man is hunting both of you."

She grabbed his hand. Her fingers were cold, her grip too tight, her voice cracking as she spoke. "But Jason… Kal-El. He's hurt. He's hurt, and I'm not sure if he'll… survive." A sob caught in her throat. "I'm his cousin. I was sent to keep him safe."

Jason held her gaze, steady, unyielding. "Kara. You need to relax. He will be fine." He nodded toward the robots working over Clark's body. "They're helping him heal. He's been through worse. He's survived worse. He will survive this too."

Kara's lip trembled. "But..."

"What he needs from you is courage." Jason squeezed her hand. "He needs you to keep him safe. Can you do that, Kara?"

She stared at him for a long moment. Then she took a breath. Then another. The trembling in her hands began to still.

"Yes," she said. "I… I can. Yes."

"Good." Jason released her hand and turned to face the entrance, his body coiled, ready. "As soon as we know Kal is safe, we turn the hunt on that fucker. But for now…" He glanced back at her, at Clark, at the machines working to save a god. "For now, we stand with him. We protect him."

Kara moved to stand beside him, her shoulder almost touching his, her eyes fixed on the same doorway.

"Okay," she whispered. "Yes. Okay."

The Red Sun light bathed Clark in its crimson glow.

The robots worked in silence.

But the night...Was far from over
