Chapter 427 - Konoha's Sword Saint [427]

The "miracle" the medical shinobi mentioned was something Hoshiyomi could actually understand. Most likely, Kuugetsu had, in that crucial moment, used her left eye's ability —the Other Shore — to forcibly shift her position just enough to avoid instant death.

As for the "Healing Resuscitation Regeneration Technique," Hoshiyomi also remembered it. In the original story, when Neji was nearly killed in his fight with Kidōmaru, it was that same technique that saved his life.

Now, with Tsunade — at her peak — personally performing the technique, the results would undoubtedly surpass anything Shizune could have achieved. That meant Kuugetsu's life should be secure. Kushina and Mikoto, meanwhile, didn't seem to be gravely injured, so there shouldn't be much to worry about there either.

With that settled, Hoshiyomi could finally focus on the next matter — dealing with the Uchiha situation.

After instructing Minato to wait patiently and asking the medical shinobi to tell Tsunade not to worry about outside affairs, Hoshiyomi left Konoha Hospital.

As he stepped out the front doors, he came upon a rather comical scene.

Uchiha Fugaku was standing at the hospital entrance, pleading with Pakura to let him in, but Pakura, seeing the Uchiha clan fan symbol on his back, refused no matter how earnestly he begged.

Hoshiyomi knew Fugaku fairly well. The man wasn't the ambitious type — his repeated concessions to Danzo and Hiruzen over the years had proven that much.

In the original story, Fugaku had only agreed to the coup after the Uchiha were truly cornered — it was an act of desperation, not desire.

And since all the coup participants had already been captured, the fact that Fugaku was still walking around freely meant he likely hadn't been involved.

Thinking this, Hoshiyomi called out:

"Alright, Pakura, let him through."

Both of them turned around at the sound of his voice. Pakura immediately stepped aside in obedience to Hoshiyomi's order. But instead of rushing inside, Fugaku walked straight over to Hoshiyomi — and did something no one present could have expected.

He knelt down before Hoshiyomi — right there in front of the hospital.

Even Hoshiyomi was taken aback. He hadn't expected Fugaku to do something so extreme. Thankfully, he reacted quickly, reaching out to pull the man up.

"Clan Head Fugaku, there's no need for that. If there's something you need to say, let's talk somewhere private."

Hearing the words "Clan Head," Fugaku finally seemed to realize how rash he had been. When he lifted his head, his eyes were already red with emotion. Saying nothing, he simply nodded and followed Hoshiyomi to a nearby quiet spot.

After signaling Pakura to stand guard, Hoshiyomi sat down — but Fugaku remained standing. Instead, he bowed ninety degrees before Hoshiyomi and spoke in a trembling voice:

"I, Uchiha Fugaku, head of the Uchiha clan, have failed to properly lead my people. Because of my mismanagement, the village has suffered grievous losses. I am willing to take responsibility — to die on behalf of my clan."

As he said this, Fugaku drew a prepared tantō (short blade) and looked ready to plunge it into himself right there.

Hoshiyomi, an expert swordsman, could tell immediately from Fugaku's stance and the way his muscles tensed — this wasn't for show. If he didn't stop him now, Fugaku really would kill himself.

At such a sensitive time, Hoshiyomi couldn't possibly allow that to happen.

With lightning speed, Hoshiyomi drew his sword — one clean strike, and Fugaku's tantō snapped clean in two.

Looking at Fugaku, Hoshiyomi suddenly understood something — it was no wonder this man had raised Itachi and Sasuke.

That sincerity and quiet strength were in his blood.

In that instant, Hoshiyomi's opinion of Fugaku rose considerably. He found himself more willing to listen — to truly hear this man's account of the so-called "Uchiha Rebellion."

After his rash actions were twice halted, Fugaku finally calmed down. When Hoshiyomi asked him to explain, he sighed deeply and began to recount everything that had led up to this point —

From his father's growing distrust of Hoshiyomi and the Konoha leadership,

to the secret clan meetings held just days prior,

and finally to the conflict between him and his father —

He told Hoshiyomi everything, down to the last detail.

After hearing everything Fugaku said, Hoshiyomi almost felt like shedding a tear for him.

Your own father has a conflicting ideology and tried to use your wife to stage a rebellion. Tsk tsk tsk. If I were to also tell him that his son, Itachi, is a spy, who confessed everything before the rebellion, wouldn't Fugaku become depressed on the spot?

Hoshiyomi had never really believed this rebellion had much to do with Fugaku to begin with, but after hearing about his miserable experience, he couldn't help but feel sympathy for him. His tone softened noticeably.

In Hoshiyomi's eyes, Fugaku had actually done pretty well.

Look at the strong-willed father and the clan elders who dismissed him, then remember that in the original story, Fugaku eventually became a respected clan head — it wasn't hard to imagine how much he must have sacrificed for his family to reach that point.

The position of "Uchiha Clan Head" was truly a scorching-hot seat.

He was a man caught in the middle — despised on both sides.

On one hand, forced to yield step by step to the village leadership;

on the other, constantly burdened by his clan's complaints and resentment.

And yet, he still tried to mediate between the two, even going so far as to make his own son a spy to get firsthand intelligence.

He really had done everything he could. But ironically, none of it ever worked out.

Outside the village, there was an ancient ancestor who refused to stay dead and a brooding young lunatic obsessed with the Sharingan.

Inside Konoha, there was Danzo, who kept pushing his luck thanks to Fugaku's restraint.

And within his own clan, all his attempts at appeasement only drove them to finally turn against him.

He went to great lengths to have his eldest son spy for him, only for that son to get brainwashed into betraying the clan and kill him with his own hands.

His only surviving son grew up to be a full-blown edgy teenager,

and in the end, the entire Uchiha clan was nearly wiped out.

Tsk tsk tsk. Honestly, if there were a 'Who Can Suffer the Most' competition in Naruto, Fugaku would start in the top five.

Comparing the Fugaku before him to the pitiful man from the original story only made Hoshiyomi appreciate his character more. His tone became even gentler.

Hearing Hoshiyomi's warm words, Fugaku was deeply moved. No one could truly understand how exhausting it was to be him.

Every day, he was scolded like a dog by his overbearing father; within the clan, he was belittled as weak because of that same father's dominance.

"Like father, like son," they said.

Fugaku's heart was full of bitterness.

Now, finally, there was someone who understood him — truly understood him.

In that moment, Fugaku even felt like swearing brotherhood with Hoshiyomi on the spot.

By the end of their conversation, Fugaku's favorability toward Hoshiyomi was at its peak, and Hoshiyomi himself had concluded that Fugaku was actually a perfect candidate to help resolve the Uchiha issue once and for all.

With that realization, the solution suddenly seemed simple.

Hoshiyomi patted Fugaku's shoulder and said kindly:

"Fugaku, I understand your struggles, and I do sympathize with you.

But as you know, what's done is done.

Tsunade and I are both part of the village leadership — if we don't impose some kind of punishment on the Uchiha, it wouldn't make sense."

Hearing that, Fugaku's expression grew pained, but he still nodded reluctantly:

"I understand. Everything that's happened is the Uchiha's own doing."

He had already resigned himself to the clan's fate —

but then Hoshiyomi said something that made him freeze in place:

"So, I was thinking… how about this?

You hand over the ones who actually participated in the rebellion, let them take the fall — and we'll call it even."

Fugaku blinked, stunned. His small eyes widened, blinking again and again.

Was this... springtime for an honest man?
