Liliette sprang upright, her breath catching in her throat.
It had been a week since the knights left for their expedition training, and not a single night had passed without her being tormented by nightmares. Her dreams were often twisted versions of reality, where the horn that once announced her first husband’s death now blared the news of Vlad’s demise.
Still half-trapped in her nightmare, Liliette anxiously scanned the room. The bedchamber was as vast and silent as always. She pulled the silken cord by her bedside, and the bell outside the door chimed softly. Moments later, Johanna, who had been exempted from the expedition to serve as Liliette’s personal guard, entered the room.
“Are you awake, my lady?” she asked before gasping sharply at Liliette’s disheveled state. “Are you all right?”
