Chapter 149 - Chapter 149: Shocking Everyone, Beheading Daniel Grant!

The air was heavy after the explosion. Black Widow watched Nathan's shadow vanish into the smoke, her sharp eyes narrowing with concern and awe. "Before, Nathan escaped from HYDRA's facility," she murmured, her tone serious. "That alone showed their technology and power weren't enough to contain him."

She turned slightly toward Hawkeye, her mind racing as she recalled what she'd seen. "When I first encountered him, he needed pulse rifles and prototype tech just to fight HYDRA's exoskeleton soldiers. Back then, he was still human, still learning. But now…" Her eyes darkened. "He slaughtered an entire HYDRA division — mechanical units, advanced drones, four enhanced super-soldiers — all wiped out in a single night."

Hawkeye exhaled slowly, the realization settling in. "And now he just suppressed Emily, one of the Kraken's top operatives… with ease. And he can fly?"

Black Widow nodded grimly. "Exactly. Every time he reappears, his power surges again. It's like watching a storm evolve — each return more violent than the last. His strength isn't just growing… it's evolving."

She crossed her arms, the tension visible even through her calm facade. "Now, Nathan's power is beyond belief. He's hunting HYDRA's command hierarchy, one by one."

Hawkeye whistled under his breath. "Then this guy isn't just powerful — he's a monster. Nobody grows this fast. Not even the Hulk."

He glanced toward the distant skyline, where faint electric arcs flickered in the clouds. "What the hell did HYDRA do to him? What kind of experiment could create something like that?"

Black Widow didn't answer. Her fingers danced across her wrist communicator, sending encrypted data back to headquarters.

---

Inside S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier, alarms sounded and analysts scrambled to interpret the incoming report. The moment Nathan's name appeared on the central screen, Nick Fury's expression hardened. "He made contact again?" Fury's voice was low, dangerous.

"Yes, Director," Maria Hill replied. "Widow reports that Nathan neutralized Emily — HYDRA's aquatic-type superhuman. Complete elimination."

Fury turned toward the observation window, his single eye reflecting the storm clouds outside. "He's no longer just surviving. He's declaring war."

He clasped his hands behind his back. "Nathan… what kind of man are you becoming? And how far does your limit stretch?"

After a long pause, Fury issued his order: "Initiate full trace protocol. I want Nathan located. If he's hunting HYDRA, we need to know where he'll strike next. Open diplomatic channels — we cooperate if possible, contain if necessary."

---

Meanwhile, far from the Helicarrier, Nathan stood over Emily's fallen form. Her once-resonant voice — capable of summoning destructive sound waves — was now silent. The ground beneath her was scorched, and the water that had surrounded her evaporated into mist. His eyes glowed faintly with residual electricity as he turned away.

His next target was clear.

Daniel Grant — the architect of HYDRA's human experiments.

---

Daniel Grant sat inside a dark sedan idling on a rural road outside New York. The interior reeked of expensive leather and paranoia. His fingers tapped impatiently against his phone. "Why isn't Emily answering?" he muttered. Static hissed, followed by a distant explosion. The line went dead.

"What the—?" His eyes widened. "That was the Kraken division's frequency! Something's wrong."

He tried again. No signal. His throat tightened. "Who could've—" He cut himself off, the thought too terrifying to complete.

Memories flooded back — the canyon battle, where HYDRA's entire ground force was obliterated by a single man. The same man who had escaped their control project. Nathan.

"Driver," Daniel barked. "Turn the car around. We're leaving New York now."

"Yes, sir." The driver shifted gears, nervous.

Daniel leaned back, trying to calm himself. "If Emily fell, then even staying here is suicide. Whoever defeated her can't be ordinary." He clenched his fist. "Still, HYDRA has survived worse. I just need time. I just need—"

His phone buzzed. One of his lieutenants. He answered instantly.

"Report."

A terrified voice stammered on the other end. "S-Sir… Kraken's team has been annihilated. Emily's dead. Witnesses say the attacker flew. He… he controlled lightning."

The phone slipped slightly from Daniel's grasp. "Lightning?"

"Yes, sir. He didn't match Thor's build. Smaller. Leaner. But he—he was glowing."

Daniel's face went pale. "Impossible." His voice trembled. "He's not Thor. Then who—?"

The voice whispered back, "They said the attacker's name was… Nathan."

The call ended in static.

Daniel froze, the name echoing through his mind like a death sentence. "Nathan?" He remembered the trembling young man they once strapped to an operating table, the man HYDRA had tried to break and mold into a weapon. Back then, Nathan's power had been unstable — raw but controllable. Now… he had become something far beyond what their science could measure.

"God help us," Daniel whispered.

---

The car sped through the outskirts of the city. Rain began to fall, tapping softly against the windshield. Daniel exhaled shakily, trying to steady his thoughts. "We're almost clear of the city limits," the driver said.

Daniel nodded, loosening his tie. "Good. Once we reach the countryside, change vehicles. I'll regroup with what's left of our network in Boston."

But fate had already closed its hand around him.

A figure appeared in the middle of the road, standing perfectly still beneath the rain. He was masked, his black coat rippling in the wind. The faint blue glow at his fingertips illuminated his silhouette.

"Sir?" The driver squinted. "There's someone—"

Daniel's eyes widened as recognition hit him like a gunshot. "No… no, it can't be."

"Turn around!" he screamed. "Turn the car around, NOW!"

The driver slammed the wheel, but it was too late. A bolt of lightning flashed across the darkness, striking with pinpoint precision. The arc burst through the car's hood, hitting the driver square in the chest. The man convulsed violently as electricity surged through his body, the smell of burning fabric filling the air.

The sedan veered off the road, skidding uncontrollably before crashing into a massive oak tree. The impact shattered the windshield and flung Daniel forward into the dashboard. Pain exploded through his ribs and shoulder.

For a moment, the world was nothing but ringing in his ears and the hiss of burning metal.

He groaned, blood running down his temple. Then he saw him — the figure walking toward the wreck, unhurried, unstoppable. Each step was punctuated by the faint crackle of energy around his hands.

Daniel clawed at the door, forcing it open with a trembling hand. He stumbled out, falling onto the wet ground. "Stay back!" he shouted, crawling backward. "Who are you?! Have I wronged you somehow?"

The man didn't answer. His mask reflected the lightning, hiding his expression.

Daniel's voice turned desperate. "Listen — I can give you anything you want! Money! Power! Weapons! I can make you untouchable! Just—just let me live!"

Finally, the man spoke, his voice calm but cold enough to freeze Daniel's heart.

"Don't you recognize me?"

Daniel froze. That voice — familiar, haunting. "It's you…" he whispered, his pupils dilating in terror. "Nathan!"

Nathan removed his mask, revealing his face illuminated by flickering lightning. His expression was eerily calm, devoid of emotion, but his eyes burned with purpose.

"You made me this way," Nathan said. "You carved the monster you feared most. Now you'll meet it."

Daniel tried to stand, but his legs gave out. "Please… we— we only wanted to harness your power! You were supposed to be humanity's next step!"

Nathan stepped closer, energy building around him like a storm given human shape. "Humanity's next step?" he repeated softly. "You mean HYDRA's next weapon."

Thunder rolled in the distance. The rain intensified, hissing on the cracked asphalt. Daniel tried one last plea. "You don't have to do this! Think about what you've become! The world could—"

Nathan's eyes flared. "The world doesn't need monsters built on suffering."

Lightning exploded outward, blinding white. In a single motion, Nathan raised his hand — and a blade of condensed plasma formed, slicing through the air with terrifying precision.

Daniel barely had time to scream.

The strike cleaved clean through him. The rain washed away the blood almost instantly, leaving only the faint scent of ozone and scorched earth.

Nathan stood silently for a moment, looking down at what remained of one of HYDRA's most dangerous masterminds. Then, without a word, he turned away, letting the storm swallow him whole.

---

Back in the Helicarrier, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sensors caught a surge of electromagnetic activity outside New York. "Director, we've detected another lightning burst. Coordinates match Nathan's signature," Hill reported urgently.

Fury's expression hardened. "And?"

Hill hesitated. "Sir… HYDRA's Daniel Grant is confirmed deceased."

For a long moment, Fury said nothing. Then, quietly, he muttered, "Nathan just executed one of HYDRA's founders."

Black Widow's voice came over the comm. "Director, if he keeps this up, he'll dismantle HYDRA faster than any of our strike teams. But—"

"But if he turns on us," Fury interrupted, "no one can stop him."

He turned toward the glass once more, the storm still raging beyond. "Get every file on Project Ascension. I want to know exactly what HYDRA put into that man… before it's too late."

---

Nathan, meanwhile, soared high above the clouds. The city lights flickered below like dying embers. Each heartbeat echoed with residual power, his veins glowing faintly blue before fading again. He closed his eyes, remembering every scream, every experiment, every injection.

HYDRA's sins had created him. Now, their creation would be their undoing.

As thunder rolled across the sky, he whispered softly, "For every life you took… I'll return the storm."

And then, with a flash of light, he disappeared into the horizon.
