Chapter 28 — Ragnarok: Embers Sown in a Sea of Stars
1. The Isolated Sanctuary, A Fading Hope and an Approaching Shadow
With Dr. Schulman's desperate declaration, Aether's central control room was now bathed only in the eerie, pulsating glow of red emergency lights. A desperate silence, punctuated by the intermittent beeps of system error warnings, pressed down on them. The solar magnetic storm had struck Aether with a ferocity far exceeding their worst projections. Not only the Starlink constellation but also Aether's independent deep-space communication network had been rendered almost entirely useless. Severed from all external contact, they were now adrift in the midst of this cosmic tempest, a tiny, fragile coffin floating in the vastness of space.
"Main power system output below 30%! Most solar panels damaged! Emergency fusion generator also showing intermittent power drops!" "Starlink network connection completely severed! All data transmission to and from Earth impossible!" "87% of external observation sensors are offline! We can no longer even confirm Cerberus's approach, Master Kai!" Liam, Aether's young chief engineer, reported, his voice almost a sob. His face was deathly pale, etched with extreme fatigue and despair.
Lilith clutched a sleeping Naru tighter. Her face was devoid of all color, and for the first time, a profound sense of hopelessness seemed to cloud her eyes.
Lilith: (Almost a whisper) "So… this is how it ends, Kai… Not at Babel's hands, but before the fury of this colossal universe… so utterly… futilely…"
Kai, beneath the burning red emergency lights, silently watched the frantically blinking warning messages and the despairing faces of the scientists. His own expression was an unreadable mask of cold composure, yet his mind was racing, faster and more coldly logical than ever, desperately calculating the one, final move left to them.
2. Operation Ragnarok: The First Attempt, and a Crushing Failure
"No, it's not over yet, Lilith." Kai finally spoke. His voice was low, yet the steel-like will contained within it seemed to pierce through the despair gripping everyone's hearts. "The solar storm is a catastrophe for us, but it is equally so for 'Babel.' At this very moment, all of Earth's communication networks and financial systems must also be on the verge of paralysis. Even their vaunted 'Kairos Engine' is likely malfunctioning before this cosmic variable. Perhaps… now is the only chance we have to plant the 'Trumpet of Judgment' we prepared, deep into their heart, into 'Asgard,' and in the most painful way imaginable."
At his words, Lilith, Dr. Schulman, and all of Aether's surviving personnel, their eyes flickered for a moment. A tiny, yet fatally dangerous spark, igniting in the ashes of despair. Operation Codename: 'Ragnarok.' It was a plan to concentrate all of Aether's remaining energy and computational power, along with the last vestiges of the Starlink network Kai had hacked, onto a single objective: to implant the 'Trumpet of Judgment' data bomb into the master control protocol hidden deep within the 'Asgard' network.
They staked everything they had left and launched the operation. Under Kai's command, all of Aether's auxiliary communication antennas on its outer hull swiveled in unison, aiming towards an invisible point in space, and fired the 'Trumpet of Judgment' data stream. Lilith and Aether's hackers, linking Cassandra's last backup system with Aether's AI, desperately tried to secure an infiltration route, analyzing the defense patterns of 'Asgard' and 'Cerberus.'
But Babel's defenses were, beyond imagination, robust.
Lilith: (A desperate cry) "Damn it! Cerberus is reading our attack patterns and reconfiguring its firewalls in real-time! Data transmission rate below 20%! At this rate…" With her urgent shout, the holographic screen displayed a devastating image: the 'Trumpet of Judgment' data packet they had launched being intercepted and shattered by 'Asgard's' outer defense system. The first attempt… was a complete and utter failure. A despairing silence once again descended upon the control room.
3. The Sanctuary Exposed, and Babel's Full-Scale Assault
As if adding insult to injury, all of Aether's warning systems began to shriek madly! Their last desperate attack attempt had, ironically, provided the 'Babel Empire' with the decisive clue to pinpoint Aether's exact location!
In the subterranean bunker of London's 'The Summit Club,' Julian Adler, his face a mask of apoplectic rage, stared at Aether's coordinates displayed on the holographic screen and roared like a wounded beast. "Those cursed rats…! How dare they hide in the realm of the gods and try to stab us in the heart! Anja! Immediately dispatch all available stealth interceptor squadrons, every weapon of destruction, to those damned Aether coordinates! Leave not a single one of them alive, not a single shard of data! Turn those phantoms of the stars… into the coldest, darkest dust of the cosmos, along with the ashes of the new world they dreamed of!"
On Aether's external cameras, dozens of black, deathly shadows were now clearly visible, approaching Aether at terrifying speed. Babel's most elite stealth interceptor squadrons.
Dr. Schulman: (Her voice filled with utter despair) "Now… it truly is the end… They're coming… Aether… can hold no longer…"
4. The Last Card from Despair's Edge: A Dive into the Kairos Abyss
Just as everyone thought all was lost, Kai spoke, his voice low yet resolute. "No, Doctor, there is still one way left! We ourselves… must enter the abyss of the 'Kairos Engine'!"
Lilith's and Dr. Schulman's eyes widened simultaneously.
Lilith: "Kai, what are you saying…! The abyss of the 'Kairos Engine'? That's suicide! That place is not a realm a human mind can withstand…"
Kai: (Cutting her off) "I know! But do we have a better option now? If an external attack is impossible, then we have no choice but to open the door from within! Dr. Schulman, when you participated in the development of the 'Kairos Engine' in the past, did you, by any chance, embed some kind of emergency shutdown code, or a logical flaw known only to its developers?"
A complex expression flickered across Dr. Schulman's face. She spoke with difficulty, her voice trembling. "...There is. But it is… sealed in the deepest part of Kairos, in a domain called the 'Genesis Memory.' To access it… requires 'Neuro-Link Dive' technology, to directly transmit human consciousness as data. Aether has a prototype device, but it is exceedingly dangerous. If it fails…"
Kai: "Then everything we are ends there. But if we succeed… we can make the 'Trumpet of Judgment' resound throughout the world. And perhaps… even stop the 'Kairos Engine' itself." He looked at Lilith. Her eyes were still shaking with fear, yet within them, a resolute will, a willingness to dive into any hell with Kai, was already blazing.
5. Ragnarok, The Second Battle: A Soul-Staked Dive, and the Final Ember
In the deepest, most secret laboratory of Aether, Kai and Lilith lay side-by-side in the 'Neuro-Link Dive Chairs,' with Dr. Schulman's assistance. Young Naru was asleep in Dr. Schulman's arms, oblivious to everything.
Dr. Schulman: (Tears welling in her eyes) "You must… you must return… For this child's sake, if nothing else…"
Neuro-Link headsets were placed on Kai's and Lilith's heads. With the hum of the system activating, their consciousness was instantly ripped from the physical world and plunged into an unknown space of swirling light, darkness, and an infinite torrent of data – the deepest abyss of the 'Kairos Engine.'
It was a world beyond human imagination, wondrous and terrifying. Billions, trillions of data points moved like living entities, forming a colossal universe, and at its center, like a black sun devouring everything, the core of the 'Kairos Engine' pulsed with an ominous light. Their minds clashed with Cerberus's ruthless digital defense systems, nearly losing themselves countless times in the storms of logical traps and data tsunamis. But the mystical light emanating from Kai's 'Urim and Thummim,' the faint data signals Cassandra sent until its very last breath, and the intense empathic bond connecting their souls, rescued them from the abyss of despair time and time again.
And finally, they found it – the 'Tearful Record' left behind by Dr. Ariel Cohen, the one and only 'Emergency Shutdown Code' capable of temporarily paralyzing the 'Kairos Engine'!
Kai: (In the abyss, his thoughts reaching Lilith) "Now, Lilith! Connect this code directly to the 'Asgard' network, and activate the 'Trumpet of Judgment'! I'll buy us time!" He focused all his mental energy, hurling every last ounce of his power towards the core of the 'Kairos Engine.'
Lilith, tears streaming down her face, yet with a resolute hand, inputted the emergency shutdown code and simultaneously activated the 'Trumpet of Judgment's' automatic dissemination protocol!
At that very instant, outside Aether, Babel's stealth interceptor squadrons finally broke through Aether's last defensive line and began to unleash a merciless barrage of missiles!
KRA-BOOOOOOOOM!
Aether's central control room exploded in a colossal fireball, and the explosion began to chain-react, engulfing the entirety of Aether!
But just before everything was obliterated, from Aether's last remaining communication antenna, a single, powerful data signal was fired out towards the entire world. It was the 'Trumpet of Judgment.'
[MESSAGE: TRUMPET OF JUDGMENT. FORCED SYNCHRONIZATION WITH ASGARD NETWORK COMPLETE. AUTOMATIC DISSEMINATION PROTOCOL… IMMEDIATE ACTIVATION ACROSS GLOBAL NETWORK!]
The moment Aether disintegrated into countless star-like fragments, vanishing into the darkness of space, Lilith's and Kai's consciousness, in the deepest abyss of the 'Kairos 심연(Abyss),' slowly began to fade. Yet, a faint smile touched their lips. They had done it.
