Chapter 9 - Its Starting...

The group dispersed, each member setting out on their respective missions. Alex and Samantha, now students at Racoon City High School, navigated the hallways with the ease of those who had lived through it before. They made friends, joined clubs, and tried to live as normal a life as possible, all while keeping their true identities a secret. The others went about their days in a similar fashion, blending in seamlessly with the world around them.

At the "Phoenix's Den," Takeo taught his students with a fierce dedication that mirrored his commitment to protecting the innocent. His dojo became a beacon of light in a city slowly descending into shadow. Meanwhile, Dr. Maxis and Sophia worked tirelessly in their clinic, healing the sick and offering comfort to the weary. The ARCADE ROOM, now a secret underground training facility, served as a stark reminder of their true purpose—to prevent the impending apocalypse.

The months ticked by, the group's lives intertwining with the fabric of Racoon City. Alex, now known as Alex Mercer, became a local legend in the school's history club, his knowledge of the city's past both fascinating and eerily precise. His friendship with Samantha grew into an unshakeable bond, a beacon of hope in the face of their daunting future.

Dempsey, as a seasoned war veteran, found solace in the local VFW, sharing tales of valor with other aging heroes. His "Double Tap" perk, however, remained a secret, a silent promise of protection that he hoped would never need to be fulfilled.

Nikolai, ever the charismatic host, made the bar a reality. He called it "The Last Stand," a nod to their shared history and a silent pact to always stand together. It became a local watering hole, where the group would unwind, sharing whispers of their true purpose only among themselves. The bar was a haven, a place where the weight of their destiny could be momentarily set aside in favor of laughter and camaraderie.

But the shadows grew restless as the months turned into years. The group felt the tension building in the city, the whispers of a dark force lurking just beyond their reach. Reports of strange occurrences at the Arklay Research Facility grew more frequent, and Richtofen's spies within the Umbrella Corporation revealed whispers of a viral outbreak.

In the quiet moments between school and the dojo, Alex and Samantha would huddle together, poring over the blueprints of the Arklay Facility that Richtofen had smuggled out. They studied the layout, the security measures, and the rumored containment units with a mix of fascination and dread. It was in these moments that Alex's mind would drift to the possibility of using his powers to alter the course of history.

The nights grew longer as their senior year approached. The whispers grew into shouts, and the shadows grew teeth. Racoon City was on the brink of chaos, and the group could feel the impending doom closing in. Alex's imagination churned with ideas, conjuring weapons and gadgets that could give them an edge against the looming zombie threat. The ARCADE ROOM buzzed with the electricity of creation as he worked tirelessly to arm them for the inevitable battle.

One fateful evening, as they gathered in the warm embrace of "The Last Stand," the door swung open, and in stepped Samantha's best friend from school, Rebecca Chambers. Her eyes widened at the sight of the group, their faces a mosaic of shock, relief, and camaraderie. "Sam," she gasped, "What are you guys doing here?"

Samantha, ever the quick-thinker, waved her hand dismissively. "Just a little study group," she said, flashing a disarming smile. "You know, finals are coming up."

Rebecca's gaze swept over the group, lingering on the peculiar assembly of individuals she had never seen before. Alex felt a bead of sweat trickle down his spine, his heart racing. He had to think fast. He conjured a mental image of a typical study group, complete with textbooks and notepads scattered across the bar's surface. The scene shifted before their eyes, the bottles and glasses vanishing, replaced by a tableau of academic diligence.

"Oh," Rebecca said, her voice filled with curiosity. "I didn't know you guys studied here." She took a step closer, peering at the textbook in front of Samantha. It was an ancient tome, bound in leather and filled with cryptic symbols, but to Rebecca, it was a simple chemistry book.

Alex stepped forward, his smile easy and convincing. "It's actually a family place," he said, gesturing to the bar with a casual wave. "It's been in our family for generations. This is Uncle Nik," he said, placing a hand on Nikolai's burly shoulder. "He's the owner."

Nikolai's eyes twinkled with amusement at Alex's quick thinking. He leaned over the bar, extending a meaty hand to Rebecca. "A pleasure, Miss Chambers," he said, his Russian accent thick and welcoming. "Please, sit. We have much to discuss."

Rebecca took the offered seat, her eyes still wide with curiosity. Alex filled her in on their cover story, explaining that the group was a mix of distant relatives and friends from out of town, brought together by their shared love of history and a desire to pass their knowledge onto the next generation.

"So," she said, looking around the room, "What do you guys study here?"

Alex's mind raced, trying to come up with a believable cover for their clandestine operations. "Well," he began, "our Uncle Nik here is actually quite the historian." He gestured to the bottles of vodka behind the bar, which had transformed into dusty tomes of ancient lore. "He's got quite the collection of rare books and documents that we all love to pore over."

Nikolai, ever the quick study, leaned over the bar, his amusement barely concealed by the guise of a wise old historian. "Da, little one," he said, his eyes twinkling. "This place is filled with secrets of the past, waiting to be uncovered." He winked at Alex, who felt a wave of relief wash over him.

The tension in the room eased as Rebecca began to regale them with stories of her own, tales of strange noises coming from the Arklay facility and the whispers of a mysterious project that had the entire school abuzz. It was then that she dropped the bombshell. "You know," she said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "I heard something weird today."

Alex leaned in, his heart racing. Had their cover been blown? "What is it?" he asked, trying to keep the anxiety out of his voice.

Rebecca glanced around, making sure no one else was within earshot. "I was at your house," she whispered. "Your mom, she told me where to find you."

Samantha's eyes widened in shock. "Sophia?" she breathed, her hand flying to her mouth. "But she was supposed to keep our secret!"

Alex's heart sank as he realized the potential consequences of their cover being blown. They had worked so hard to maintain their anonymity, to live these lives without drawing attention to themselves. But here was Rebecca, Sam's closest confidant, standing in their secret lair, her eyes filled with innocent curiosity.

But before he could say another word, she pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket and slapped it on the bar. It was an acceptance letter from the Racoon City Police Department, announcing her successful application to the S.T.A.R.S. program. "Look at this!" she exclaimed, her face flushed with excitement. "I did it! I'm going to be a STARS agent!"

The group stared at her in stunned silence before erupting into cheers and applause. The tension in the room dissipated like a popped balloon, replaced by the warmth of genuine joy and pride. This was not the revelation they had feared. This was a celebration.

Rebecca's eyes sparkled with excitement as she scanned the faces around her. "Thanks, guys," she said, her voice a mix of relief and happiness. "I can't believe it's actually happening!"

Alex's mind raced, trying to keep up with the sudden twist. He hadn't anticipated this, but he knew they had to act fast. "Congrats, Becky," he said, forcing a smile. "This calls for a celebration." He turned to the group, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "Everyone, grab a drink on the house! It's on me."

The door to the "Last Stand" swung open again, and in stumbled Tank Dempsey, his S.T.A.R.S. gear slightly askew from his rigorous training sessions. He had officially joined the S.T.A.R.S. team as a senior agent, his "Double Tap" perk a well-kept secret. The other agents filed in, their faces a mix of exhaustion and relief. They had just come from a training exercise, and the bar was their preferred spot to blow off steam.

"What's the occasion?" Tank asked, eyeing the celebratory atmosphere.

"Rebecca's joining us in the S.T.A.R.S. program," Alex said, slapping him on the back. "She's going to be a valuable asset."

Tank's face broke into a wide grin. "Well, I'll be damned," he said, ruffling Rebecca's hair. "You little scamp, you did it."

Rebecca blushed, ducking her head and laughing. "Thanks, Tank."

The group gathered around her, each offering congratulations and advice for her new career. In the midst of their celebration, the TV in the corner flickered to life, the news broadcasting a special report from the Arklay Facility. The reporter's voice was tinged with a hint of fear as he spoke of a containment breach and the unexplained disappearance of several scientists. Alex's heart skipped a beat as he recognized the facility from the game—this was it, the start of the outbreak they had been dreading.

The room grew tense as the implications of the news sank in. They had thought they had more time, but the Umbrella Corporation was weaving its insidious web through Racoon City's fabric. The group exchanged knowing glances, their celebration cut short by the grim reality of their mission.

Without a word, the S.T.A.R.S. members—all but Alex, Sam, and Rebecca—grabbed their gear and headed for the door. The urgency in their steps spoke louder than any words could. They had been called to the Arklay Facility, the very place they had hoped to avoid for as long as possible. As they disappeared into the night, the gravity of the situation settled heavily upon the remaining trio.
