Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Storm Before Dawn

Night fell, a vast, dark curtain shrouding the remote mountains of Southeast Asia. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, occasionally punctuated by the distant growls of wild beasts, adding an eerie quality to the silent forest. Deep within a dense jungle, a dilapidated military base loomed, its towering watchtowers like silent behemoths in the darkness, their cold concrete and steel structures glinting ominously under the moonlight. This was the lair of "Shadow," the leader of the "Shadow" organization, and the place where John and Phyllis were about to launch their final assault.

John, dressed in a specialized black tactical suit, his face grim, his eyes as sharp as an eagle's, stood at the front of the team, radiating an undeniable aura of leadership. Phyllis followed closely, her tactical suit highlighting her agile physique, her face streaked with camouflage. Her eyes were resolute and calm, like a sword poised to strike. Behind them were the Yafei family's most elite mercenaries and security team, each fully armed, moving silently like ghosts melting into the night. Kevin and Black commanded their respective squads on the flanks, while Lynn, through a miniature communicator, monitored the "Shadow" organization's defense systems in real-time.

"Lynn, what are the infrared scan results for the target area?" John's voice was low and powerful, relayed through encrypted earpieces to every team member.

"Boss, there are three intersecting infrared beams in the left corridor, and two in the right ventilation shaft. The central area has heat signatures, but they seem to be moving," Lynn's voice, calm and electronically synthesized, quickly replied. "Their defense system is more sophisticated than we anticipated, and they seem to have detected something; it's fully activating."

"Good," a flicker of approval crossed John's eyes. "Phyllis, you take Shadow Fox and Gecko to infiltrate through the left infrared area, avoiding the heat signatures. Kevin, you take Black Panther and Blade through the right ventilation shaft. Black, you're in charge of outer perimeter security, ensuring all passages are safe. Any suspicious personnel, kill on sight!"

"Understood!" Phyllis's voice was calm and strong, without a tremor. She looked at John, her eyes filled with trust and determination. It was time to thoroughly settle the score from five years ago. She knew this battle wasn't just for revenge but for protection—to protect the future of the Yafei family, and to protect her hard-won love with John.

Phyllis agilely crouched, like a ghost in the night, leading the way into the left corridor. Shadow Fox and Gecko followed closely, their movements light and silent, like shadows merging into the night. Phyllis, leveraging her top-tier reconnaissance skills, precisely identified the gaps in the infrared beams, her body weaving through the narrow spaces like a flexible snake. Her fingertips lightly touched the cold wall, sensing the faint air currents; no subtle signal escaped her perception.

Just as they were about to pass through the infrared area, a dark figure suddenly emerged from the shadows at the end of the corridor, moving with astonishing speed. The person was clad in a black, tight-fitting suit, a peculiar silver half-mask covering their face, revealing only a pair of cold eyes.

"You came, Phyllis Alice," a cold, hoarse voice spoke, laced with a hint of mockery. It was "Phantom," a core operative of the "Shadow" organization.

Phyllis's eyes narrowed. She knew this was the beginning of a direct confrontation. She immediately signaled Shadow Fox and Gecko to continue forward, while she moved to engage "Phantom." The two instantly lunged into combat, fists and feet exchanging blows, each collision carrying a fierce killing intent. Phyllis's movements were sharp and swift, every strike aimed at a vital point, while "Phantom's" skills were equally impressive, each move vicious and carrying a chilling murderous aura.

On the other side, John's team also encountered obstacles. Inside the ventilation shaft, a pungent tear gas suddenly billowed out, accompanied by intense gunfire from deep within the shaft.

"Damn it! They set an ambush!" Kevin's voice came through the earpiece, tinged with anger.

"Black Panther, clear the way!" John's voice was steady and powerful, without a hint of panic. Black Panther roared, charging forward like a tank, his immense strength instantly tearing through the metal wall of the ventilation shaft, carving a new path for the team. Blade followed closely, the cold gleam of his melee weapon flashing in the darkness as he precisely harvested enemy lives.

"Lynn, cut off their communications and surveillance!" John commanded in a low voice.

"Doing it, Boss! 'The Sage's' defense system is stubborn, but I've locked onto his core server. Just give me thirty more seconds!" Lynn's voice carried a hint of urgency, but his fingers flew across the keyboard, lines of code cascading down the screen like a waterfall.

Phyllis's struggle with "Phantom" intensified. Every clash reminded her of the hardship of past training, and it further solidified her resolve to fight alongside John. She felt the powerful aura emanating from John, which made her both proud and heartbroken. He wouldn't let her out of his sight again; this time, it was genuine protection, not control.

"Do you think you can stop us?" "Phantom's" voice was laced with mockery, his attacks becoming more aggressive, trying to overwhelm Phyllis.

Phyllis scoffed, her eyes burning with battle intent: "The five-year-old score, today, I'll collect it, with interest!" She suddenly pivoted, dodging "Phantom's" lethal strike, then, with lightning speed, delivered a chop to "Phantom's" neck.

At the same moment, Lynn's voice came through the earpiece, tinged with excitement: "Success! Communications and surveillance systems are cut!"

"Excellent!" John's voice held a cold smile. "All units, advance! Capture 'Shadow' alive!"
