Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Kira Lane

[3rd POV: Kira Lane]

Kira sighed heavily under his laughter, and decided that she didn't want to bicker with him. Pulling out a card from her jacket, she made sure he got a good look at it. "A friend of mine 'll drop by in the next few days with some work for you, and no, its not that kind of work. That there's our business. Be sure to check it out and get back to me if you really do wanna get out of here."

Griffin's laughter died slowly as he checked out the card. Aeon Incorporated? His eyes widened as he realized who he could be dealing with.

"I-I never got your name?" He asked hesitantly.

Kira turned back, a weasel-like grin present on her face. "Kira Lane, Co-owner of Aeon Incorporated, and your future boss if yo-" She began saying, but was quickly interrupted.

"How's the pay?" He asked, not caring about manners. There was a certain gleam in his eyes that Kira recognized from her own youth- a drive that went beyond personal wealth.

"I can guarantee at least a hundred thousand a year if I'm right about you, and-"

"When can we leave?" He asked, dropping the wrench that he'd been holding, also stunning her with how quick he was to accept.

"...I'll need to get some things together, but in a few days." Kira could practically feel Vex going mad in the comm channel like a rabid dog, spouting things like 'You're ruining the mission!' or 'Now we won't be able to track who bought the truck!' but she didn't care.

This was nothing but a desperate kid in front of her, and she'd eb dammed if she let him down. "Finish these jobs up and don't take anymore that'll take you more than a day to finish. I don't know when I'll have the things to get you out of here."

Griffin nodded readily, glancing down at the card in his hands as if it was gonna disappear any moment. Kira waved lazily behind her as she stepped out of his area. "See you around kid!"

...

[3rd POV: Griffin]

"...Damn! THE Kira Lane coming to scout me of all people?!" That name was famous anywhere, a well known family out of Marition city. They had wealth back when America was still a colony, gaining even more by investing in just about anything they could. They started with the railroads, managing to get an absolutely filthy cut of the profits on any track they let them. And the one's that didn't? They soon found that their competitors had found much better routes to build, leaving them no choice but to sell off.

When that era settled, they played a key part in every war that took place, supplying the nation with nearly anything they needed. Whether it was weaponry, ammunition, food, water, clothing, they had it all. The Lane family had their hands so deep in everyone's pockets that soon enough, people forgot about it, leaving the public to remember them as just an old family that their parents held quite a bit of reluctant respect for.

But Griffin wasn't just good with a set of tools, he was good on the keys too. He'd managed to dig up a lot of old business deals that a lot of the older families had tried to hide. It was mostly out of curiosity, but it helped him get a clear view of who owned what in the world.

And if there was anyone he could trust to get him out of the slums, it was Kira Lane. Only remaining member of the Lane family, having spent the first sixteen years of her life in the slums before a DNA test found a lucky match when she was arrested for stealing car.

Twenty years later, she'd shown that she had the mind of a genius when it came to business. Maybe it had to do with her upbringing, but either way she'd built a reputation of taking unfortunate young men and women out of equally unfortunate situations in the past, and Griffin knew he was never gonna get another opportunity like this.

Gaining control of his breathing, he looked around his lot, noting what jobs he'd yet to finish. "...Okay. Let's get to work."
