Ugh, Halloween was here, which meant kids dressed up in their stupid costumes looking stupid. The only upside was free candy. Well, that and weird pictures, but Wes didn't have a camera anymore. That mysterious ghost boy destroyed it, and Wes wouldn't get a new one until Christmas. Which meant all he could do this year was dress up along with everyone else and go door to door for candy. What a drag.
Kyle and Eas went with him. They sometimes got dirty looks for being "too old" for Trick-or-Treating. They were all still students, which meant they were not too old, thank you very much. Eas took the lead wherever they went, while Wes and Kyle dragged their feet. (Kyle liked Halloween as much as the next kid, but he was always so laid back that he never did anything at speed.)
Late into the night, a swirling green vortex of doom interrupted the normal candy acquisition. Wes perked up immediately. Finally, something interesting happened!
"Uh, guys, what's that?" Eas asked.
"Man, I wish I had a camera," Wes muttered.
"It looks awesome," Kyle said said in his version of an enthusiastic voice.
"I'm going to investigate," Wes said.
Eas held out his arm to stop Wes. "I don't think that's a good idea."
"Why not?" Wes challenged.
Eas shook his head. "I don't know. It just doesn't seem safe."
"Then come with me," Wes said. "I'm sure the two of you can protect me." He marched off toward the vortex.
"Wes, don't!" Eas called out, but Wes ignored him. "I'm not going with you! You're on your own, weirdo!"
Kyle didn't say anything, but stayed by Eas's side. They walked off in the opposite direction.
"Cowards," Wes said under his breath.
As he drew closer to the vortex, strange things started happening. People were running and screaming all around him as ordinary objects, such as a post box, turned into monsters when hit with green lightning. Even a lamp post turned into a Medusa-like creature with tentacle legs. Wes had to hide behind corners to keep out of sight of the monsters. They all glowed with a green glow.
"Like the ghost boy," Wes whispered to himself.
Finally, he found the source of the vortex. It rose out of the old Townsend house, long considered haunted. Wind whipped around, sending papers and dust flying. Wes held on to his candy bag for dear life. He approached the land the house rested on only for the vortex to stop and reverse direction.
Wes ran to the house. He wasn't going to miss whatever was going on! Should he go through the front door? That seemed too risky. He settled for peeking through windows until he caught sight of Danny Fenton, Sam Manson, Tucker Foley, and Mr. Lancer. Everything seemed ordinary. No ghosts.
"What?" Wes moaned. He slunk away from the house.
Things were back to normal. The monsters were gone, the vortex disappeared, and the moon shined brightly in the sky. It was as though nothing had happened.
So what did happen?
