Chapter LXXI: The Polaroid Mind, Part 6
Asahi can't help but chuckle as he takes another sip of his iced coffee, the familiar rush of caffeine flooding his senses. His family's warnings about his coffee addiction echo in the back of his mind, but he brushes them off with a nonchalant shrug. After all, what harm could a little coffee do?
With his beloved beverage in hand, Asahi strolls through the bustling mall, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingling with the scent of perfumes and pastries. He feels a sense of contentment wash over him as he walks, the familiar sights and sounds of the mall comforting in their familiarity.
As he rounds a corner, Asahi's eyes light up at the sight of Natsuki waiting for him, her smile radiant and her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Hey there, beautiful," he greets her, his voice warm with affection.
Natsuki returns his smile with one of her own, her hand slipping into his as they fall into step together.
"Hey, Asahi! I'm so glad you could make it," she replies, her voice tinged with excitement.
As they walk, they're joined by Enmei, Hanako, and Gin, their laughter filling the air as they make their way to the billiards hall. Asahi's heart swells with happiness at the sight of his friends, grateful for their company on this lazy afternoon.
With cue sticks in hand, they engage in a friendly game of billiards, their competitive spirits driving them to new heights of skill and precision. Asahi can't help but feel a sense of pride as he sinks one ball after another, his confidence soaring with each successful shot.
But as the game draws to a close, Asahi and Natsuki find themselves alone, the others having wandered off to explore the mall further. As they sit together in the quiet corner of the billiards hall, a sense of unease settles over Asahi, the weight of Natsuki's words hanging heavy in the air.
"I feel like something's off between us, Asahi," Natsuki begins, her voice soft with concern.
"I don't know what it is, but... I can't shake this feeling."
Asahi's heart sinks at her words, a knot forming in the pit of his stomach. He knows that their relationship hasn't been without its challenges, but he never imagined that things could take such a sudden turn.
"I... I don't know what to say, Natsuki," he admits, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
"But I promise, I'll do whatever it takes to make things right between us."
But despite his best efforts, Natsuki's expression remains unchanged, her eyes filled with sadness as she shakes her head.
"I'm sorry, Asahi. But I think it's time for us to part ways," she says, her voice trembling with emotion.
Asahi's heart shatters at her words, the realization hitting him like a ton of bricks. He never imagined that their relationship could come to an end like this, and yet here they are, standing on the precipice of goodbye.
With a heavy heart, Asahi watches as Natsuki walks away, her figure growing smaller and smaller until she disappears into the crowd. And as he stands there alone, the weight of her words echoing in his mind, Asahi can't help but wonder where it all went wrong.
Asahi's fingers hover over the keyboard of his phone, his thoughts heavy with the weight of his recent breakup. He hesitates for a moment before typing out a message to Gin on YourBook, seeking solace in the familiarity of their friendship.
"Hey, Gin. Can we talk?" Asahi sends the message, his heart heavy with the weight of his emotions.
But as the conversation unfolds, Asahi's negativity seeps through his words, casting a shadow over their exchange. With each passing moment, Gin's mood grows darker, his attempts to lift Asahi's spirits met with resistance and indifference.
"I just don't know what to do anymore, Gin," Asahi admits, his voice tinged with despair.
"It feels like everything's falling apart."
Gin's patience wears thin as the conversation drags on, his frustration mounting with each passing moment. Despite his best efforts to offer support and encouragement, Asahi's negativity proves too much to bear, and Gin finds himself at a loss for words.
"I'm sorry, Asahi. I just can't do this right now," Gin finally admits, his voice strained with frustration.
"I need some space."
Feeling defeated, Asahi watches as Gin ends the conversation, his heart heavy with the weight of his own troubles. He knows that he should reach out to his friends for support, but the thought of burdening them with his problems fills him with guilt and shame.
Lost in his thoughts, Asahi barely notices as Enmei and Yui approach him, their concerned expressions drawing him out of his reverie. He forces a smile, trying to hide the pain that lingers just beneath the surface.
"Hey, Asahi. Are you okay?" Enmei asks, his voice filled with genuine concern.
Asahi nods, his smile faltering slightly.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he replies, his voice barely above a whisper.
But Enmei isn't convinced, his gaze searching Asahi's face for any sign of the turmoil that lies beneath. With a sigh, he reaches out and squeezes Asahi's shoulder, offering a silent gesture of support.
"You know, sometimes it helps to talk about what's bothering you," Enmei suggests, his voice gentle but firm.
"We're here for you, Asahi. Whatever you're going through, you don't have to face it alone."
Feeling a glimmer of hope stir within him, Asahi takes a deep breath and forces himself to meet Enmei's gaze.
"Thanks, Enmei. I appreciate it," he says, his voice steadier than before.
As Enmei offers a reassuring smile, Asahi feels a weight lift from his shoulders, if only for a moment. With a newfound sense of determination, he excuses himself and steps outside, his mind buzzing with thoughts and emotions.
As he stands alone in the cool evening air, Asahi takes a deep breath and pulls out his phone, the camera app open and ready. With each click of the shutter, he captures the beauty of the world around him, the melodramatic music playing in his mind adding a touch of melancholy to the scene.
Despite the pain that lingers in his heart, Asahi can't help but find solace in the simple act of capturing the world around him. And as he looks out at the world with fresh eyes, he knows that no matter what challenges may lie ahead, he'll always find comfort in the beauty that surrounds him.
