Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Cause & Effect | What Has Occurred

Cassian had long pondered the belief of reincarnation & whether or not it was real.

"Maybe another day should do the trick," she said. The pancakes were warm as was the slight taste of sweet syrup, something she did not have on a daily basis. The warm tones of the downstairs room where breakfast, lunch & dinner took place was inviting & calm, save for the single small oddity that was a black clump of fur.

"Meow."

The single small oddity was a black clump of fur was a black cat, their fur coat shiny & pristinely groomed.

The drive to school was mundane as it was boring, the sound of bustling cars & greenery bright & alive, contrasted with the small notebook with images of dolphins & fish.

"We're here honey, make sure to do most of your school work ok?" said Mom, pushing her glasses up her nose as she smiled at her child exiting the car.

"Ok mom, see you later!" Cassian said, waving back at her mother while walking to the entrance of the school.

"Today's lesson will be about…" the teacher went on to draw on the chalkboard.

Magic lessons sure are tough huh.

She thought, taking note of the chalkboard in the front of the class with sigils & magic circles. The practice of magic was not only a difficult one, but also a taxing on the mind & body. Mana not only circulated in the air, but also through the body, such as in the veins or blood of a person. One's mana supply greatly mattered on one's lineage, & Cassian was lucky enough that they came from a family of sages.

Everyone had their own innate special form of ambient magic that could be crystallized & thus used, the "key" of one's core. It is said that few actually unlock or discover their key & those who do are usually part of the higher parts of society, such as being a government official or having a job such as a police man.

One of Cassian's classmates with brunette hair raised her hand, "How does someone gain their key?" she asked.

"The process of which someone gains their key is still talked about till this day & is still considered a mystery. Our next lesson will cover what they are rather than the history of how magic was used."

Sigh

History huh

She couldn't help but feel tired, the history that her teacher was talking about was the war of the first Earth & Water elementals. It was & is still said that they, or rather their remnants could still be walking the celestial body till this day. The elementals were also teachers at her school & some were even her classmates.

"Hey Cassian, are you free for lunch?" one of her classmates asked. Elementals had no need for sustenance as long as they had a source of their element near them, such as an earth metal elemental carrying a necklace made of tungsten.

"No, do you have anything planned?" I replied, taking the lunchbag my mother had packed me to the cafeteria with my elemental classmate.

"Yeah, I was wondering if we could talk about the newest album released by that one artist that you like," He said, playing around with the clay that he had on hand.

"Mmm… Oh! You mean Milier right?" I asked, opening the lunch my mom had packed me, a nice simple yet filling egg sandwich with ham & some cucumbers for snacks.

"That would be correct." He said, kneading the small piece of clay that he got from chemistry class with his index, middle & thumb.

"So how do you like their newest album?" I asked.

"I like it a lot! The sound is pleasing & the music itself makes my heart beat!" He said, pounding his fist against his chest which bore the singer's trademark.

"So how's chemistry or alchemy class?" He winked at me & in turn I rolled my eyes, chemistry or alchemy was one of the courses that many dreaded due it being extremely detailed & taking lots of notes to fulfil what was essentially the quota for things such as tests & finals.

"Alright, I guess I just need to study more." I said, eating a cucumber slice that I helped my mother prepare.

"It happens to be like that sometimes." He said, smiling fondly.

"I have to go now, it was nice talking to you again!"

"See you tomorrow! Make sure to not cause a miniature explosion again alright?" I replied, picking up my sandwich & taking a large bite, its insides slightly sliding out, tasting great, the soft egg contrasting against the crunchy lettuce. Sometime later the school bell rang & I was ready to go to my next class.
